In South Korea kids go to school an average of 12hrs a day. You're expected to be number 1 always if not you're seen as nothing. Often even by your own family. Kids are often bullied into following the plan their parents made for their lives.
This BTS song is a commentary to the South Korean Education System, which is incredible competitive. A lot of those kids suffer depression because of the stress of getting the highest marks or getting into the "best" universities. Unfortunately all this pressure has a correlation to this country having highest percentage in the world of "unaliving" oneself (i can't write the "s" word here). BTS had felt that pressure and they wanted to bring awareness of it. I guess that is another reason they became so popular, they talked about issues that are taboo in their culture. PS. Yes, they do wear make up. A lot of haters made fun of them because of it. I wonder where those haters are now?
In this video, the very white face makeup with extreme eyeliner was for the futuristic look of the video, however. Still, yes the makeup is much heavier in their early days.
I would recommend the rise of bangtan series. It was created by an Army, and it shows BTS journey from trainee to debut and thier rise to fame. Its the best documentary series since it uses their own vlogs and videos to tell their story. There are 21 chapters with behind the sceens and deleted sceens for most chapters.

@Zero9to5247, answer some of your questions about BTS, the K-pop industry and the music video “N.O” N.O. Stands for no offense, The three BTS rappers and in-house producers and composers of big hit entertainment are the main lyricist especially the three rappers of BTS: RM, Suga and J-Hope. The “N.O.” The music video is talking about the South Korean school system and government and BTS are very social conscious young men at the time of this music video the oldest member was 21 and the youngest member was 15 , They attacked the school system because over in South Korea from the time that you get up in the morning 8 AM for school regular school hours are basically between 8 AM - 4 PM after that the students go to an after school study which is until sometimes 11 or 12 o’clock at night they go home go to bed get up and do the same thing every day. What RM is talking about when he says “SKY” those are the three initials that stand for the three major universities in South Korea if you get into those that means you will have a good government job or you will be what you call one of the worker /drones of society. Which all our parents want us to have a good decent job that makes basically the same money but it is a cutthroat system The school system , Major test that they study for before they get into a university are called the L -SAT and very few can get into it because that test is extremely important and difficult. The school system in South Korea is extremely serious More so in the United States . BTS three albums talk about the school system and what young people go through they stand up for the young students, the young people of South Korea. The government of South Korea are extremely conservative and they push their young people to be at the top. So much pressure is put onto these young people in South Korea that South Korea has the highest suicide rate between 13 and 19 years of age! Heading back to the Music video you asked a question why they’re such heavy make up for a young man to be wearing that is part of the K-pop formula at that time this was 2013 and they wore heavy eyeliner and that was that type of concept that not just only BTS but other Male K-pop groups use. Also the reason for a K-pop boy group not to have a bunch of females shaking their behinds in their music video that is very common in the United States hip-hop music video and culture. South Korea is very conservative and that’s not really appropriate for that type of music video and not only that the western rap and concepts are different than what South Korea adapted from the west concepts of hip-hop. Since you are a new reactor to K-pop it is not a genre, it is an industry that was created by the entertainment companies in South Korea and there’s over 1000 music entertainment companies in South Korea but there are only four top big K-pop entertainment companies and that is BTS‘s company BIGHIT which is a subsidiary of the big conglomerate HYBE, SM, JYP, YG entertainment companies are the most bigger financially secure than the smaller entertainment companies. The hands that we saw in the music video kind of on opposite side as BTS were walking through down the stairs those are considered south Korean government and educational system as the puppet masters and the students the puppets , you notice that Suga verse stated about being puppets the students that’s a reference to the image that was in the music video. BTS will come back in 2025 as a group cause all seven members are doing mandatory military service only one member has recently gotten out did his 18 months of military service because he was the first to go in. The mandatory military service is because of North Korea and South Korea is still divided and technically still at war it may not be an active fighting war it has a cease-fire but still it could break out any moment that is why there’s a mandatory military service in South Korea. As you know the history of South Korea and North Korea the 38th parallel line that separates north and south was put there by the United Nations and The American general Douglas MacArthur. South Korea has many allies and one of them being the United States. there’s major United States bases and if you ever go to South Korea you will see a lot of United States influences. Their system is similar to our system as far as politically and we know North Korea is a communistic dictator ship. BTS are very conscious political minded young men they will talk about subjects in their music videos unlike all the other K-pop groups they push the envelope so to speak, the leader RM is extremely intelligent he has an IQ of 148 in the top of his class 1.3% to be exact he is a philosopher/literature artist and each member of BTS have their bachelor degrees. Now if you were to do a comparison to American hip-hop / Korean Hip-Hop which is also a thing in South Korea the K-pop is not necessarily only pop music it stands for multiple genres of music. K-pop is an industry not a genre it is a definition of multiple genres of music. There is a informational guide to BTS by Taylor Mari. It is quite a long informational Guide,47 minute long ,but it will give you some insight on how they formed as a group their individual position and personalities and what they bring to the table to the group of BTS. You go to her channel and it will show an update version only up to May 2022 she is currently working on the chapter 2 of BTS from May 22 until they get back from their military service. Sorry for the very long comment but it was to give you some information and hopefully you will continue with your journey with BTS👍💜 and yes I have subscribed to your channel😊

The eyeliner is funny to them 😂. They had a good laugh because of it. Actually every person who appears on tv wears makeup. BTS seldom have girls in their mv. Out of their 6 mvs with over 1B views, only 1 mv have a girl in it which is the featured artist. They have proven that the music and story alone is enough to attract people to watch their mvs.
"You don't have to listen." Um. if you're Korean, you do. In the Korean culture kids don't talk back to parents. They're expected to obey. In their culture, they're expected to respect anyone older. (Sugar, one of the rappers in BTS, was having trouble acting a certain way for one of their MVs and said that he was having trouble because he had never raised his voice to an adult before.) You probably need some background to really understand this song. In S Korea.. Yes, the education system is rigid. But it's more than that. Kids, especially in high school, go to school for LONG hours. Many start their days at 6 am to take the bus/train to school. Then after class ends (about 4 pm) they go to cram schools. These are private classes covering single subjects like math, Korean or English. They often don't get home until 10 pm and still have homework from their reg classes. The family often makes sacrifices, like taking 2nd jobs, in order to pay for these private classes. And why? Because there is one test that seniors across Korea take. One Test, On One Day, that will determine which college they get into.* If they miss that test they'll have to wait a year. *The university a student graduates from will determine their future career. The pressure is intense. You can find documentaries about the education system. I saw one on YT. In this documentary some British newsmen/adults tried the test (the English portion) and many could not answer the questions. It's really tough-- lasts 8 hours. To contrast this, they gave an older SAT test to seniors in a Korean class. American students would generally take at least 45 min to finish this test, but the Korean students finished in 15 min.
