    ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
    In this video we show our new open nesting box design that allows kits to come and go as they please. After the kits have had 10-14 days to grow in the tote, we move them to a grow out cage. We use our open nesting box to prevent kits from getting stuck outside the nesting box. No more frozen kits getting stuck out of the box. Momma will only nurse when she's ready. When kits give up trying to feed they need to warm back up in the litter cluster. This nesting box ensures every kit can make it back to warm up. I wanted to make sure I uploaded this video in October right before the cold temps set in.
    JUNIOR NESTING BOXES
    At 3-4 weeks we swap out the open nesting box with a junior hide box. This allows them to get away from a passing animal that may stress your rabbit. Having a place for your rabbit to escape allows them to stay calm and stress free which keeps your rabbits healthy.

      stick to pellet hay and water. The cabbage can cause bloat. If you want to give them a treat feed them whole oats or rolled oats. This will help.

    Love your posts Bobby. I learn a lot from you, keep up the great work. Quick question - why do you need a nesting box when you have those amazing kindling totes?

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We don’t need nesting boxes unless all our kindling totes are taken. Once the kits are 10 days old we remove them to a seperate cage with mama. we’ll use a nesting box for about another week to give the litter a place to cluster. This helps the rabbits stay comfortable and contained for easy inspection for the next 4 weeks until we start weaning them. thanks for asking!

    I'll be making both of these two nesting boxes. Thank you so much!!! I homesteaded in Bozeman Montand and did much of this on my own as a female as my husband had zero interest. I had rabbits, goats, a cow, etc. I am in interior designer so eventually had to move to downtown Chicago for my business, but after 20 years, it is now time to move into the woods again. Do you have any states you recommend? I can't do Montana again, as I want to be near a water source. I feel water will be critical in the coming years and I need it for gardening etc. Also, glad to hear you have an Amazon store, I'll shop from it often. Also never feel like your information is 100% crucial to us who are learning from your hard earned knowledge. I hope everyone sends you some financial support. I thank you and I appreciate your teaching and getting to the point without a l lot of jokes, antidotes and rabbit trails. No pun intended. Shari

      I'm sorry to hear that. I'd re-breed mom and give her another chance see if things turn around. Sounds like you made a spacious cage and nesting box.
      Your nesting box should allow a couple inches of clearance on each side that should suffice your cages should be no less than .5 ft.² per pound of rabbit. 5sqft

    I like the concept of the nest box but why do you put the wire in the bottom if you put paper with pine shavings and hay? I understood it's there to let pee and poop go through but that's not going to happen with all the other stuff in the box. So I was just wondering why bother with the wire.

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you don't have the wire all the bacteria collects in the bottom of the box. With a cage floor the shavings soften the paper, the paper gets torn to small bits, it all falls through after about 4-5 days and by then you want a clean nest anyway so at that point you simply make a new nest with paper shavings and straw. All the paper does is buy you some time. Without it the shaving and hay are gone the next day. At four weeks I remove the box and put in a small hide. Mama can get away and close down the milk bar when she wants.

    Can I get some clarification please? So if you are not using the tote system, do you use the nest box with the short lip from the get-go? So she kindles in it? Or do you have her kindle in a box more enclosed, and then move them to the one with the short lip after a week or two? Thank you

    • @TheRabbitryCenter

      I wouldn’t use this nesting box before your rabbits reach 14 days old
      Use a traditional nesting box like the one below amzn.to/35LcbMG

      Nesting boxes still work. By surrounding your nesting box with straw and installing hardware cloth around the lower walls of your cage that will help greatly. The majority of your kits should be fine. If you can build drop down cages that might be a a better option too.

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRabbitryCenter thanks for the guidance. So you think a nesting box with a higher lip would keep them from getting dragged out while nursing? We have not had our first litter yet, but will probably have one in January.

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so sorry you had trouble. These are not birth boxes or intended to replace a traditional nesting box system. These are Day 10 boxes to mimic a nesting box on its side at two weeks. (We turn our nesting boxes on their side at 2weeks so the kits can come and go as they please)
      Only after gathering the kits from the kindling totes on day 10, do we use these. They're specifically to be used with our kindling totes. That way they can make their way in and out of the nesting box ( in their new grow out cage) and not get trapped outside of the cluster and freeze. Hope that helps.

    Doesn't the paper and straw on top of the floor defeat the purpose of the wire floor? How often do you clean out that bedding material?

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jeff Lake good question -the paper helps the straw stay in the cage for 3-4 days. Without the paper a majority of the straw would be gone the next day.
      You only need to add straw a couple times and about a week later the kits are little bunnies who don’t need the straw any more

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t used them mostly because my hutch is outside with a herd of raccoons that frequent the area but I’ve heard good things about them

    • @kathypittman5854
      @kathypittman5854 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRabbitryCenter that’s what I use because I was given a five slot nest box with those in there already. I cut a thin board with holes drilled for ventilation and to let urine escape and so far it’s worked great. Of course I put nesting material on top of it. It’s very easy for babies to go in and out. I’m in the southeast so it’s warmer here. We have raccoons as well but it hasn’t been a problem yet. The cage is on the bedroom side of the property so hopefully we will hear intruders plus a good LGD doesn’t hurt.

    Hi Bobby, great video! I built our nesting boxes similar to yours! : ))
    I have a problem, maybe you can help me out. We got 2 does and 1 buck about 6 weeks ago (first time). The one doe isn't interested in breeding at all. She runs in circles around the buck and even jumps over him.
    With the other doe, everything went fine, the breeding seemed successful, there were 3 fall-offs. She started building a nest about 3 weeks into pregnancy, and then...she didn't give birth. It's now day 37, I guess it would be more than optimistic to still hope for kits.
    I just don't understand why she built that beautiful huge nest, she pulled so much hair, I could fill a pillow with it!
    Do you have any experience with this behavior? And of course with the behavior of the other doe.

    • @tatianawolf1253
      @tatianawolf1253 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you check in the nest and make sure there aren’t kits under all that hair, for the one who took. Maybe try his breeding the stubborn doe videos for help with the other one.

      I’d rebreed the doe that had the false litter today . She’ll think she’s pregnant due to the breeding but sometimes it doesn’t take.
      Be sure to have your buck only breed one doe every other day to make sure his fertility has a high count

    • @MP-uz5ks
      @MP-uz5ks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRabbitryCenter So it's common for a doe to build a nest though not pregnant..
      I rebred her already. Fingers crossed!
      The other one is still the same. I tried everything you explain in your videos.
      Thanks for the answer!

      If it's the rabbit's first litter, she only has one or two kittens and not understanding what is happening, she may eat them by accident when trying to remove the sack. I usually tried to have three rabbits giving birth at the same time so I could distribute the number of kittens between them. When introducing a new kitten, I would rub it into the fur of the adopting mother so it would smell right.

      Contrary to popular belief rabbits remain active and thrive outside in the cold. Rabbits are covered in fur and are built to survive very cold temperatures. Temperatures 40-55F are perfect but rabbits remain comfortable as low as -30F.

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To clarify this nesting box is only for those that use our kindling tote system.
      Day10:
      At this point they’ve already consumed Cecotropes in the kindling tote before their eyes have even opened. We move them on day 10 and only at that point do we implement this box. This way they can come and go as they please, in and out of this short nesting box

      I haven't used them but have heard good things. If they're outside I'd be concerned about how low they drop down. I wouldn't want a predator to get their claws threw the cage. If they were in a barn or shed I wouldn't be worried. They'll work great.
