WHY bone health MATTERS | How to prevent OSTEOPOROSIS

  • Did you know that you are replacing your entire skeleton approximately every 10-12 years? This is because of something called bone remodelling which exists to get rid of bad bone which has accumulated microcracks and form a healthy new one in its place. The key players in this process are two types of cells: osteoclasts, which break down old bone, and osteoblasts, which build new bone in its place. When osteoclasts work faster than osteoblasts, our bone mass decreases, leading to a condition called osteoporosis, which increases the risk of fractures. Worldwide, it affects one in three women and one in five men over fifty, leading to pain, potential disability and loss of independence. Some experts refer to it as a silent epidemic as it may go unnoticed until that person experiences a fracture.
    So, what can we do to prevent osteoporotic fractures and ensure we have healthy bones throughout our lives?
