We're in Mykonos, Greece! We're taking a little mini-vacation from living in Naxos to check out the nearby Mykonos. Mykonos is one of the most popular Greek Islands. It also happens to be very expensive and overcrowded and those are two reasons we've always avoided it. We figured being low season we should finally check out the famous Mykonos.
However, we were wrong. Even late in the season (November), there are three cruise ships in port the day we were there with 12,000 passengers. The old port of Mykonos was very busy with many, many people.
Throughout the video we explore the Old Town Mykonos including the Old Port, the beaches, the cute alleys and walkways throughout the town. We also make our way to Little Venice and the iconic Mykonos Windmills.
We also give a tour of the suite we rented:
Check rates/availability for our room at Little Venice Villa/Suites in Mykonos:
    www.booking.com/hotel/gr/litt...
We also discuss the prices we are paying for things like beer and coffee here in Mykonos as compared to Naxos.
All in all we're happy we got to see Mykonos but it's probably not a place we'd come back to.

I visited Mykonos in April. So was not busy like it was during your visit. About half the businesses were closed. Outside of the main summer tourist season there is no night life to speak of. Lots of the businesses preparing for the summer tourist season. I stopped there on a trip around several of the Greek Islands as it provides access to the nearby impressive archeology ruins on Delos Island.

Wow, the seashore and Little Venice look as busy as they do in June and September when I have been there. I think that's because even then you only get people off the cruise ships in town during the day. People who are staying on the island go to the beaches outside the town during the day and some go into town at night and that's when it's really busy. The beer that you got wasn't badly priced for the Little Venice area - you can get cheaper beer but need to know where to find it and go away from the tourist hotspots.

I recently visited Naxos and Santorini, but did not go to Mykonos. Glad that I skipped Mykonos. Santorini, especially Oia, is gorgeous despite the number of tourists. My partner and I got away from the tourists by staying in one of the cave hotels which offered very nice accommodations, and quietness. Go out in the morning before 10:00, and the evening after 4:00 to avoid cruise ship tourists. Naxos, however, has to be my favorite island. Though there are many tourists in Naxos Town, you can get out of the tourist areas easily to sightsee, hike, visit the many beaches, taste wine and olive oil, etc. It is noticeably less expensive, and a great value.

Visited both Mykonos and Santorini in the late 1970s on a small Greek cruise ship. Apart from the windmills, the sea front at Mykonos looks nothing like it did back then. There used to be a fairly tame pelican which used to sit on a chair on the front.
Santorini looks fairly similar but the only access to the town was by donkey (too hot to walk up). It seems that both places have lost their authenticity and their original charm.
Certainly wouldn't consider going back to either of them as they're now just tourist traps.

So we just laid around the pool and came into town for dinner and back to the hotel. We felt we wasted our time. Yes those little laneways are cute, but it's such a small area. The rest of the island is very desolate lacking trees, gardens etc which made it really hot. Nothing really much to see. Horrendously expensive as you said. We much preferred our time on Kefalonia. Thanks for this one, when you have cruise ships landing at these destinations this is bound to happen, also I am afraid to say that when you have every travel vlogger/influencer going to these destination's it dosen't help with amount of foot traffic as that's the whole point of the industry. The locals will love it to a certain extent as they can charge what they like and have a relaxing winter in the off season. Then it will become like Venice and then they will start to complain. I prefer the other greek islands which are a bit low key however you need to balance that with atmosphere which people bring.

The reason Mykonos and Santorini are super expensive is that they have been advertised too much and they attract celebrities and rich people.

Completely agree with your thoughts! I've visited 16 Islands over the years and Mykonos is 100% overrated - yes if you want the highest luxury and see famous DJs this is your island but you DO pay for it.
If you want the real Greece, it's not here. There are numerous islands with much better beaches (Milos), greener landscapes (Skiathos), more interesting culture (Karpathos) and much cheaper/ less crowded.
I hope you guys got to do other trips from Naxos.. Amorgos is not to be missed!

Why don't you try the mainland of Greece? You choose the most touristic islands and ofcourse there are a lot of people in the hihg season, and after that there is less to do. The mainland is also much cheaper to live. Pelopennesos is beautifull, and the north of Greece is also recommended.

The Cyclades once were great to visit in the early 90s, but now just too expensive and touristy. Can highly recommend the Peloponnese as suggested above. Try Kardamyli, Stoupa, Areopoli, Geromilenas, Koroni and Methoni. Just a pretty, and a fraction of the cost. Think one third of the cost of the Cyclades for food and drink.

It is a very sad and disappointing (probably disturbing to some extent) thing to know that Mykonos, once the island selected by authors, painters, sculptors and people aiming to experience the natural beauty of this island that was a rather poor stronghold for pirates for centuries has now become a place where prostitution, drugs, alcoholism, rudeness and complete disrespect of almost any lawful behavior rules. Hotels, restaurants, beach bars and cafeterias charge exorbitant prices (usually without issuing any receipt), they employ young Greeks or illegal immigrants at monthly wages below (sometimes way below) the minimum wage, without any social security compensations and having them work 12-14 hour shifts 7 days per week treating them like slaves,, while beach bars and hotels occupy beaches charging ridiculously high prices for an umbrella and two chaise longues, forbidding people who are not willing to use them and pay for them from swimming in the beach (by Greek law all beaches are public and freely accessible to everybody). Much of the tourist economy of the island is in the hands of the Russian mafia and its oligarchs much of the supply of food, equipment and fuel a part of the building business is ruled by the Albanian mafia. Corruption runs high, as you can open any sort of shop almost anywhere if you have "the right connections" and you can build whatever you wish or can afford without feeling restricted by any building permits, Greek laws on the use of land or any public space demarcation. Local Mykonians, once happy and proud of their island, are questioning whether they are going to have the means to keep their properties on the island, are more and more threatened by the shady people that make Mykonos their summer residence and by the myriads of people landing on their island in the summer, as tourists seeing Mykonos as the paradise for heavy drugs, easy free and paid sex, wild partying and a chance to engage in any sort of extreme, unhinged nightlife "entertainment" of all sorts. Mykonos was recently characterized as the "Colombia of the Mediterranean Sea", if that adds a layer of description to the fast, sad and possibly irreversible disintegration of this very beautiful island. What a shameful waste!

Most people don't visit Mykonos for the beauty (all of Greece is beautiful) but for the party vibe and the luxury. There are unbelievable hotels, villa, and gourmet restaurants. It's the VIP island. Really famous and really rich people prefer it. In summer time you may see hundreds of private yachts coming from all the Mediterranean countries . Their owners and their friends spent thousands of dollars instantly.

    • @DelightfulTravellers
      @DelightfulTravellers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Totally get that. Those people go there on purpose and know what they’re getting. However, a huge number of people go to Mykonos each year that don’t know it’s a luxury and party island. They see pretty Instagram photos with white buildings, cute allies and no people, and they hear that Mykonos and Santorini are where you go, so they just do it. Then they leave thinking that all of Greece is like that and have no idea what they’ve missed.

As a Greek , I would like to inform that it is not good choice to visit Mikonos. Why ? Mikonos is very popular 🏝️ and visited by popular persons and life style all over the world. This reason and some bad companies in island made all services many expensives. With a simply words Mikonos it is not for anyone (it is not good I know and make me aggressive this). So I would like to suggest to visit other Greek islands of Greece much chipper and very good quality of service. If you are a just a person in the world stay away from Mikonos , if you are someone with a big wallet you can go.....
