  • Finding the best position at the organ console makes it possible to play the pedals accurately, operate the expression pedals and other foot controls easily, and to stay reasonably comfortable.

"Seated one day at the organ,
    I was weary and ill-at-ease
    And my fingers wandered idly
    Over the noisy keys..."
Then I got up, tied my Organmaster shoes comfortably, stretched my legs and drank a cup of coffee with a splash of
Jeremiah Weed and cream, went to the bathroom then back to the organ, adjusted the bench and lighting
correctly, smiled benevolently and considered just how damn lucky I was, turned the key to start the blowers
and set my registrations, then gave this wonderful work "The Lost Chord" my absolute best effort. By the time
I reached the final chord, I felt worthy of my presence at that console, and thanked God for his investment of
talent in one such as me.

I died a little when he stepped on the pedals. Never. Step. On. The. Pedals.

That's a LEG BREAKING OFFENSE. DO NOT STEP ON OR STAND ON THE PEDALS. My Instructor cracked my shins with her cane the first time I stepped on them. I never have taken the luxury to do so again, and anyone who defies this rule deserves to have both legs and feet completely broken, and banished from the console and re-broken for a repeat offense.

@KINGDOM of AU I'll tell you EXACTLY why. It's not a matter of how sturdy the pedals appear. There are springs and electrical or mechanical contacts that are connected to them, and these can easily be damaged or become misaligned so that the pedals don't operate their corresponding electrical or mechanical contacts, or in the case of a tracker linkage type organ (pedals and manuals coupled directly to the windchest pipe valves by metal linkage) the linkage can become misaligned, bent or broken. Any of these damages are EXPENSIVE to repair. I know. I do these repairs. Question the post all you want, then call a pipe organ repair person and ask them about it. I consider it a LEG BREAKING OFFENSE.

@@benforsthoffer3978 They are made of hardwood- naturals are usually rock maple, sharps are the same with ebony caps. They are strong, but that ISN'T THE POINT. It's what holds them in place and connects them to the organ itself that is the point of contention. There are springs, rods, electrical and mechanical contacts, or in the case of tracker organs which have metal rods that connect the pedals to the wind chest pipe valves directly (called "linkage") that can be EASILY DAMAGED, BROKEN OR MISALIGNED if the pedals are walked on or stood on. When these things break, they are EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR. Don't step on, walk on or stand on the pedals. My organ instructor rapped my shins with her cane when I inadvertently stepped on them. I NEVER forgot that. Then I apprenticed with an organ repair person and learned firsthand how to perform the repair for this problem. It Is HARD WORK.

Mark Hall I will stop getting on and off the organ that way them. Thanks for your reply.

Me too. My instructor was militant about that, and some other things. One day I inadvertently stepped on the pedals to scoot over, and her cane went across my shins. To this day I remember the sternness of her voice and her admonishment to NEVER DO THAT AGAIN. I found out from other students that I had entered a select fraternity when I did that. One somewhat overweight student had to pay for damage to the organ's pedal contacts when he stood up on them.

I'd love to have an adjustable bench like that.

If you need to use your feet to scoot your butt over on the bench, place them on the foot board under the bench. That is partly what it is there for.

I have no problem with understanding that the toes should slightly hoover above the keyboard, the issue for me is while moving your feet sideways - there must be some point of PUSHING OF slighty of towards left/right otherwise the feet wouldn't want to move that smoothly sideways or should I a bit lean my whole body towards the direction that the feet wants to follow? Greatly appreciate your comment Maestro.

Has anyone down anything extensive in relation to the Alexander Technique and Organ Playing?

I can't seem to move my bench forward because it's not wide enough (It hits against the pedals if I move it forward). This is the original bench that came with the organ. Do I have something configured wrong?

I heels dug in to the pedal board. I am no organist. My old timers never beat the console like they do today.

your position is very important for pianist and organist... if you just use whatever position you want its not going to be optimal for playing all the notes with speed once you get into difficult classical music

More to it than that. Good posture is needed for any instrument you play.
