Like a few other commenters, I didn't know it at the time, but the night I watched this performance by AC/DC on Countdown was the night Australia changed. It is impossible to overstate the effect of Bon appearing in drag before 7pm on the national broadcaster (the ABC) as a Catholic schoolgirl with a lit cigarette running around the stage without underpants on. Australia was very conservative back then. It still is TBH, but let me tell you, to be an adolescent girl growing up in 1970s Australia was not without its challenges. Especially if your father fought in World War2 and thought 'allowing' his daughters to finish Year 12 and go to university proved that he wasn't sexist. Which in the context of the times is true I suppose. And that was six years after this performance, which was the first time AC/DC appeared on national television, and is now recognised in Australia as genuinely historic (and broadcast by the ABC on Australia Day). Backstory: the boys didn't know Bon planned to appear in drag. With seconds to go, he arrived late and ran onto the stage. This explains why Phil Rudd and Angus can't stop laughing. Countdown was broadcast live (on Sunday night), and there was nothing the producers could do to stop the performance, which got more outrageous as the set progressed. Meanwhile at home, my siblings and I had tears rolling down our faces laughing. For the first and last time in her life, my mother - who always 'supervised' us watching Countdown for fear her precious brood might be 'corrupted' - was rendered speechless. My Dad was downstairs 'doing the books' - thank Christ because the television set would have been swiftly turned off if he had seen it. The next day at school, AC/DC and Bon Scott was all we talked about. The whole nation was talking about it. And that's how AC/DC was born and Australia was never the same. For a relatively short period, they were 'ours.' Songs like Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - those lyrics are decades ahead of their time. Bon sang out loud Australia's dirty little secret but took years to come out in Royal Commissions and police investigations into sexual abuse of school children. Long Way To The Top - how many people know that Bon and Malcolm asked the Rats of Tobruk Pipe Band to play the bagpipes in the recording that is usually attributed to Bon? For those who don't know who the Rats of Tobruk were, there's plenty out there in the public domain. In the famous Swanston Street film clip, the Rats of Tobruk Pipe Band are standing on the truck with the boys. Dog Eat Dog is a critique of crony capitalism and the way society treats so-called 'losers' at the bottom of the heap. Frankly I think Dog Eat Dog is Bon at his best. Every fibre of his being goes into that performance. When Bon died, I was shattered. Absolutely shattered. It took me a long time to accept Brian Johnson. Now I am grateful that I experienced the joy of Bon Scott fronting AC/DC before he and they became world famous. I will always love you Bon. Thank you :)

We were kids and their music blew away every thing. I saw them as the second of five bands playing at a day on the green in Oakland. The first band was cheap trick. Headlining was Ted Nugent. Imagine AC/DC being the opening band for Ted Nugent. This band came on and it was still morning. The crowd went crazy. By the time the band was done the crowd was spent and had little enthusiasm for Blue Oyster Cult, Journey or The meat eater himself. What a legend!!!
I was born 21 years after Bon Scott's death, but I wish I grew up in the era when he was still around. As much as I think Brian Johnson has done a great job as the current frontman of AC/DC and in continuing their success, there's just something special about Bon that no one can ever match. I am an American that lived in Australia between 1979 to 1982. I can assure everybody viewing this. Australian schoolgirls look and act like this. They hold up wooden hammers to their timid little boyfriends and threaten to kill them for whatever reason. Bon Scott is the Rupaul of Australia as he has managed to look just like the local teen girls..
I remember the evening around 6.30pm this came on COUNTDOWN. It was live and I was sitting on the floor in the lounge room. A 13 year old boy feeling embarrassed for Bon, but he showed no signs. No doubt a few shots of Whisky before running on stage would have calmed his nerves. It was a brilliant performance, unfortunately we had no recording facilities back then, but thanks to TH-cam we can now re live this moment. I was hooked on AC/DC since that night. I felt like their number 1 fan. My life changed from that moment, my folks said they were nothing but Aussie ratbag.... that was good enough for me. I bought every single album until Bon died. They live on every few days when I play their music now. AC/DC died when Bon died...
It was the same at their gigs. People assume everyone was looking at Angus all the time but Bon's charisma drew as many eyes to him as those to Angus, even though he wasn't running around the stage like a man possessed like the latter...

I remember the evening around 6.30pm this came on COUNTDOWN. It was live and I was sitting on the floor in the lounge room. A 13 year old boy feeling embarrassed for Bon, but he showed no signs. No doubt a few shots of Whisky before running on stage would have calmed his nerves. It was a brilliant performance, unfortunately we had no recording facilities back then, but thanks to TH-cam we can now re live this moment.
I was hooked on AC/DC since that night. I felt like their number 1 fan. My life changed from that moment, my folks said they were nothing but Aussie ratbag.... that was good enough for me. I bought every single album until Bon died.
They live on every few days when I play their music now.
AC/DC died when Bon died...

It was the same at their gigs. People assume everyone was looking at Angus all the time but Bon's charisma drew as many eyes to him as those to Angus, even though he wasn't running around the stage like a man possessed like the latter...
@@Ronnie_B Yes, you couldn't ask for a better front man than what they had. Not wanting to take anything away from his replacement, but Bon was just an impossible act to follow. If AC/DC had asked me to be their next front man after Bon's untimely death, I would have looked at them like they were crazy. I might have even advised them to just quit and start new careers but thankfully, nobody cares about what I have to say at the end of the day. Ha, ha!
