I like those festival gigs from the late 60s, where you'd get Joplin, The Who, Zeppelin, The Airplane, Ten Years After, The James Gang... etc just steamrolling you with the most amazing, fresh, and energetic music.
Too bad Gillan's not in perfect voice but so what? Your point is still very true. In terms of musical quality and probably variety, the 70's were light years ahead of today's dross.
I love DP over Led Zep any day of the week but Robert Plant has a voice for this sort of thing - in the 1970s at least, that is amazing. Gillan's voice is Deep Purple (and I was introduced to DP when Coverdale was singing in it).

She says she's relaxing from the stress. I take a shower blasting "Strange Kind of Woman' so I can relax. DP's music is forever!

Both are great and I grew up more with Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale but changed my mind later. This line up (above) is the real Deep Purple like Connery is the real Bond lol. In Rock is masterful far more so than Machine Head. Machine Head is a bit more mainstream in some respects but In Rock and Fireball are raw and edgy albums whereas Machine Head has all the production values and glamour - though it still a great album esp Highway Star. God I love that song.

Saw these fellows July 1971 in Miami at Pirates World outdoor music venue. They opened for The Faces with Rod Stuart. And Southern Comfort. “Woodstock” song. It was epic. I was in a 65 VW Camper Van. Magic Bus. ✌️

I don't think any band has composed and produced so many songs of such a great quality. Mostly you identity a band with one or two of their's works but this band used to produced one after another hit.

The peak of Deep Purple. 1973, fresh off Machine Head and Made in Japan. Right up there with Led Zep, The Who, Black Sabbath, and let's not forget Uriah Heep, in popularity (Queen would actually be a couple of years later). I'm amazed sometimes by how little hard rock fans today know about DP.

I am a LZ die hard fan but honestly.. DP live is the full package, Blackmore is (no discussion allowed) the best electric guitarist ever lived. Blackmore + DP = DP MKII the best hard rock band ever, when they are in mood nobody else come close.

About 15 years ago, I was at "Blackmore's night" concert in Moscow, (Russia) to be honest - I slept from this music. After the speech, the main audience went to the exit. Real fans began to ask something from Deep Purple. R.Blackmore started playing this song and the bass player sang. So, the next few days I couldn't speak because I was hoarse. On this song "i want you, i need you" all the people in this concert hall just went crazy and me included. So, Richie, you can't walk away from your calling. Deep Purple is a great band!!!
I haven't seen that live and I have no intention of ever going to see it live. He belongs on stage with four or five other guys playing rock and his wife singing backup if anything.
Blackmore was always challenging and pushing the envelope with Lord on solo's like Highway Star and this song how he and Gillian match each others "calls" .That competition on stage they performed was entertaining as hell. Much credit to those three dude's competitive spirit man.

Deep Purple - is one of Her Majesty's British armada ships that carried out the musical conquest of the world in the 70s.
About 15 years ago, I was at "Blackmore's night" concert in Moscow, (Russia) to be honest - I slept from this music. After the speech, the main audience went to the exit. Real fans began to ask something from Deep Purple. R.Blackmore started playing this song and the bass player sang. So, the next few days I couldn't speak because I was hoarse. On this song "i want you, i need you" all the people in this concert hall just went crazy and me included. So, Richie, you can't walk away from your calling. Deep Purple is a great band!!!
I haven't seen that live and I have no intention of ever going to see it live. He belongs on stage with four or five other guys playing rock and his wife singing backup if anything.
Blackmore was always challenging and pushing the envelope with Lord on solo's like Highway Star and this song how he and Gillian match each others "calls" .That competition on stage they performed was entertaining as hell. Much credit to those three dude's competitive spirit man.
