It's funny how I've watched videos of animals eating and been to zoos at feeding time and never thought about all the intricate details. Thanks for posting this program. I so want to visit this zoo.

I remember figuring out diets for cattle and sheep in college, making sure they had the right amount of fiber, vitamins, calories, etc. I cannot imagine what it must be like at a zoo where you have hundreds of different species! Fascinating look behind the scenes, thank you!

So nice to see all the animals getting fresh food on a regular basis... most places use pre-packaged kibble style foods only.

The Cincinnati Zoo prides itself on how well they care for their animals. They were actually one of the first (if not THE first) zoos in America to switch from cages to habitat-based enclosures, like the many grotto's they have today. I volunteered there for a while, and it is a joy to see all those animals happy and healthy.

I volunteer at the St. Louis Zoo and our zoo was also among the first as well when the zoo created the Bear Pits in 1920. It was considered to be state of the art back then because it was among the 1st enclosures to not have any bars. The architecture of our old Bear Pits are still around, but because we are among the top 10 zoos in the country, we are always updating our enclosures to make things better for our animals.

It would be fun to know specialty food items, like the wax worms, that are real treats for the different species. For example. Watermelon for the hippos! Surely they don’t get that in their native rivers. Who in particular loves pineapple? Who loves what and why! It must be good for the soul to work with these magnificent creatures-the Divine is apparent.

If you think feeding is intricate, the vets have to be experienced in treating so many animals and their patients are all different.

Some animals are actually given cereal as a treat during training sessions (certain animals receive novel foods like that only during training)so it probably used along those lines for harder to train behaviors.
