Not really. If they weren't willing to grab a bike of marketplace or similar then could have just bought the cheapest one the right size in that Halfords. It would almost certainly be cheaper than paying Halfords to do the required work on those bikes, and would have a much better chance of surviving the trip.
or just buy the cheapest new ones from halfords that are in stock... that would have been my solution, as i dont think they had a restriction of doing the whole line on the same set of bikes
Impressive endurance by the guys. But this is not a "Straight-Line mission on bikes through England". It is a "Will these crappy bikes make it through England" test.
As a proper bike enthusiast, the noises and 'play' (being generous with word choice here) from some major components will give me nightmares 😂 especially that wheel and how loose that cassette was! Fair play for soldiering on! Bold!
Same here. I can't help but think that this whole thing would've been way more enjoyable for them if they hadn't gotten bikes of which quite literally every component is fucked.
Yes the famous salter fell I have also done it recently both ways and it’s tough & rough , I would say a mtb needed preferably full suspension I did it on a hard tail , it was over 3000 ft over only 20 miles but what a place peaceful and no one or anything for miles loved it
A cool addition to this series could have been at the very start, you each get 50 gbp (or whatever amount) to find and buy a bike first and then X budget to spend on repairs on the way. Would have added a pretty interesting element.
why do i get the feeling that by the time you reach the end of this challenge, youll basically have nothing left but a unicycle, balacing on the axle while trying to make the journey on one surviving wheel, stripped bald, with a cracked rim all the way around lol
While i can see the fun and excitement of doing this on cheap bikes that barely pull through, having good cyclocross/gravel/xc bikes would've saved so much trouble.
There are plenty of mobile cycle repair guys in the North of England that will come out and repair/fix your bike if anyone else is stuck like these guys. Just do a quick search.
Crazy just pinching parts off a random bike sat outside a repair shop in a little town. Could’ve easily been left there to be repaired itself the next day and now its gonna have a lot more issues
Having lived in the trough of Bowland, you could have stopped at more or less any house or farm and just asked for help and they would have sorted you out. I certainly would have given you a set of brake pads off my bike if you needed them. Much better than stealing which is unacceptable.
Not just cheap but also already in poor condition to start the journey. Just to make an interesting video. A reasonably good bike would have had no problems with this route. I have 1000’s kms on my mountain bike over terrain like this with none of these issues.
Eaven my fairly cheap gravle bike would have no problem w this terrain, I'm sure they've ll got proper bikes but the cheap bikes make for an entertaining video
Everyone keeps talking about the poor quality of the bikes and no one is mentioning what their budget is that they have to try to pull this off. A good bike is very expensive, maybe they could go back to a couple of them being support and having a couple of cheap backup bikes to swap out (provided they haven't already succeeded on willpower alone, something they seem to have no shortage of). Or if you're expecting them to drop 1K on a bike for a single video for a channel that is at around 37K subs (most channels have to have at least 100K to provide enough income to support one person fulltime), then sign up for their Patreon and help make it happen.
Maplins was the same, they isolated their own customer base. Last time i was in halfords i spotted some junky shoplifters, upon leaving some random store detective stood in my way and began 'aving a go at me, according to him i was seen taking a fuse box for a caravan! I didnt even know caravans had fuses. Then the manager came and let me tell you the days of shop managers being respectable middleclass types are long and gone. He started demanding i hand over the fuses etc, proper burly, but i was genuibely nice and teying to explain they got the wrong person but they just stood in front blocking the exit silent. I then see the junkies by the window waving at me (we all had the same color jackets on😂) and i realise tge plains clothed store detective had a body cam so i start speaking gibberish in 3 like 3 different voices 'ohh im sorry im homeless i is, i didnt mean to, ' you know, like a guest on jeremy kyle, and then i realised neither had laid a finger on me, so i stopped acting silly and i was like 'if you aint gonna search me, im going hone!' I aint been back since. Weird that. I feel like it would have nade more sense to have been a shoplifter!
That is in no way a 10 minute job. Cheap bikes sometimes are just not repairable either, not designed to be. Maybe could have put new bearings in but at that point the whole cup has gone. The freewheel (doesn't look like a frehub) looks completely shot too.
Good to see an orienteering top - explains how they could find a Clit hero (e) The bikes are bad news, but great for content. +1 for the idea of dumping them and buying another BSO from Halfords.
Why not post a message to their Patreon backers "Hey, would anyone like to meet us at (next town or specified location) and sell us your bike for (X amount) or less?" I'm guessing there would be a few people who would enjoy being heroes in their story.
That climb out of Hayfield is a killer at the best of times and then to do South Head at night is wild on a proper mountain bike. I assume you rode either down Winnats Pass or Mam Tor broken road, through Castleton and Hope then on to the Co-op in Bradwell?
And now you know why there is trekking equipment around for MTBs. This trip is beyond ATB capabilities. An MTB is a Toyota Landcruiser, while an ATB is more of a VW Tiguan. Anyways, very entertaining. Adventure is taking inappropriate equipment to out-of-the-way places 🤣
Yes I know he took one of my KOMs a few weeks ago. Looked at his profile on Strava and thought why do I feel like I recognise him. Then I remembered the straight line mission I'd watched on here a few months ago.
Aha apologies for the confusion Ed, but I was replying to Ed who made the original comment as he also has a TH-cam channel.. Definitely try and take the KOM back from Adam though!
@archiefieldhouse I hadn't even noticed it was Welsh Ed who left the comment 😳. A much better match fitness wise. My channel is more electronics than cycling.
wow that halfords was horrible. In USA i can take my bike into most bike shops and they absolutely can work on my bike immediately with no appointments in most cases, i may have to wait a while or come back in a few hours but they don't just refuse to work on it and say to book for 4-5 days, crazy. They couldn't even just sold you stuff and let you fix your own bike if they are too busy? come on.
Loose cones on that back wheel! Could just finger tighten them. Oh well. Impressed you even tried it on those bikes! Fuck Halfords; always shite, absolute jokers. Would take 2 mins to sort the cones out...
I wonder if a XC mountain bike would have been better than these supposed all-terrain bikes, I would have thought disc brakes would be a must for this sort of thing.
Who on earth leaves on a trip like this before assessing their bikes? Well obviously you guys did, and with bikes in good shape, this wouldn't be an adventure - right?
8:00 Counterpoint, with all do respect mate, this line is barely wider then your mum, 😆 (Sorry, Mrs. Fieldhouse, you're collateral damage here, just being cheeky) Nah but for real love the concept of this mission but I do think this type of thing may have been avoidable with some better planning :P ;)
I know it's about entertainment, but if this was a legit attempt, you should have a harder Platinum Zone, some decent bikes and knew how to work on them yourselves.
halfords are not a proper bike shop in many ways just a bulk seller. they like to sell new bikes in bulk but when it comes to real service you need a long established proper dedicated bike shop that knows how to do things without watching a youtube video showing them how to do it. Halfords pose as bike shop but are no where as good as a bike shops that only sell a few top expensive brands. Halfords they do easy work but nothing over complex. they do stuff you could do yourself by watching YT videos to show you how.
I agree they're not a "proper bike shop" but I wouldn't be too negative about the mechanics as whole though. They could be very good they could be doing just the basics - there is also the limitation of the business they work for... its most likely here he can only do work for pre-booked slots. Even bike shops want to just replace parts these days.
Halfords is the kwik-fit of the bike world - absolutely useless. Slow, inexperienced, expensive and reluctance to help unless you book and subscribe to X. Best to for an actual bike shop or repair shop. Honesty remarkable the amount of planning and precaution you guys do when walking a straight line but not when you can do it on a vehicle 😂 not even spare parts. Second hand bikes? Eh entertaining but frustrating to watch too!
Never seen someone so excited to arrive at Halfords, the level of disappointment whilst leaving is about standard thou
Not really. If they weren't willing to grab a bike of marketplace or similar then could have just bought the cheapest one the right size in that Halfords. It would almost certainly be cheaper than paying Halfords to do the required work on those bikes, and would have a much better chance of surviving the trip.
hahahaha is that a deliberate pun on the pronunciation of 'Clithero' 🤣😂🤣😂
At this point you should’ve just purchased a whole new bike off Marketplace in the next large town you were going through
They don't seem to be the best at planning ahead -- such as making a phonecall to the bike shop earlier in the day!
@@Ajfmaizy The bikes were junk before they left.

A 'crappiest bike contest' has a nice ring to it.

Hello fellow cyclists
It has been torture watching 😂😂
Somebody please donate these guys some bikes

Aw lads, if you'd have brought the bikes to me at McCabes Cycles, I'd have stripped wheels out of new bikes if I had to for ya. Loving this content!
Never seen people so happy to be in Rochdale
It seems like stashing fresh bikes along the route is the way to go boys.
Or the Buxom Verity with a support van.
Halfords were rubbish! A bike shop that can’t just sell you a wheel is madness.
Wheal hahaha
@@tom_123 It will corrected hahaha
Halfords isnt a bike shop though
Appropriate for a BSO
Clit-hero 😂
The popular sequel to guitar hero.
It's pretty rare and hard to get your hands on it, though - no one could find it.
Clit throw.
As a former bike mechanic and occasional bikepacker, this video is painful. Great watch.
Cycling's answer to Top Gear and the grand tour. really fun to watch but those poor bikes.
A cool addition to this series could have been at the very start, you each get 50 gbp (or whatever amount) to find and buy a bike first and then X budget to spend on repairs on the way. Would have added a pretty interesting element.
Madlads riding those breaking down bikes. Hats off, also makes for entertaining content.
Cheers, lads!! Quality content! Looking forward to the next instalment 😊😎💪
Pennine Way bridleways on a bike that has no right being there in pitch black conditions?
Reminds me of my childhood, happy days/nights.
That halfords was a joke, 4-5 days!?! Anyways good job lads, very impressive effort!
Gwaaan boys! This is adventure in the face of adversity.
People asking all sorts of nonsense questions. It's Entertainment people! Are you not entertained?? I am, keep up the good work 👍

Everything you’d expect from halfrauds
Brilliant video lads 👍

Some quality bikes those 😂
3000m of elevation is a big day
Clit-hero ... couldn't tell if you were on the wind up or genuinely didn't know how to pronounce it 🤣
Halfords continuing to be absolutely useless. Standard operating procedure.
I am wondering why you don't prepared your bikes before...
Much better than part 1 thanks!
Having lived in the trough of Bowland, you could have stopped at more or less any house or farm and just asked for help and they would have sorted you out. I certainly would have given you a set of brake pads off my bike if you needed them. Much better than stealing which is unacceptable.
As soon as you said you were going to halfords i knew what was coming, absolutely useless they are...
Play in the bearings lol. Snapped axle probably
I wonder if having cheap bikes was a good idea, because they break anyways, or if expensive bikes wouldn't have broken^^
definitely worth having a more expensive bike. doesn't need to be £10k for it to stay in a far better state than these ones lol

Standard level of halfords service there
at least the guy behind the desk knew what a bike was, this is beyond normal service levels for halfords.

It's less about being a straight line, and more about using the wrong type of bike for the trip. Why not use a mountain bike?
