  • My wife has been wanting a porch swing for a while and so I thought it would be fun to surprise her with one for her birthday! I designed this swing using Fusion 360 and cut out the templates using the inventables X-Carve. From there I used the templates to cut out my stock material and assemble the swing. If you would like to make your own please let me know. If I get enough interest I will have plans/templates available for purchase.

If you're a maker and want to learn how to use Fusion 360 I would highly recommend checking out this online course made by Bob Clagett and the I Like To Make Stuff team.

As an engineer I spend most of my time problem solving and I think that's an extremely important skill. I have learned that complex problems that may seem impossible at first, can be solved by breaking them down into “byte sized” pieces. I hope that my viewers see my passion and enthusiasm for making things, and that it inspires them to make something that they're excited about.
If you’re new here you may not know that I make a lot of other cool project videos like this. If you enjoy these kind of project videos, please consider subscribing to byte sized. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this video.

I’ve looked at maybe 100 porch swing videos - hasn’t anyone ever seen or used a “vintage” porch swing? What they all have in common is they are sturdy, have thin flexible seat and back slats, and they’re lightweight. This makes them much more comfortable than something with 3/4” (or even 1/2”) slats, and if a child walks in front of one or falls out while swinging too high (been there, done that) they’re not going to get a concussion. The one I grew up swinging in 60 years ago, the one my wife inherited built by her grandfather, and the one an elderly neighbor built for my mother-in-law many years ago were all built this way. I’ve used the new-style swings and none of them were comfortable.

Love when I see a TH-camr I follow comment on the videos of another TH-camr I follow. It’s silly, but it makes me glad to know that they watch videos in the space. A lot of makers don’t for fear of copying or burnout. And it’s cute that your wives have the same name. ;)
