- Easy Porch Swing Build! This video will walk you through step by step on how to build a porch swing. This porch swing is really comfortable and really easy to build. I built this swing in about 3 hours and I used basic hand tools to build it. In this video, I show you the cut list, all the steps, and the basic plans for this awesome DIY Porch Swing! Hi, is it stable ant not rolling back when swinging? I plan to make this for my kid so the swing might be taken for a wild ride

Hi, I really enjoy watching you build. Thank you for sharing. I have one suggestion. The volume of your voice over seems to be much lower than the volume of the tools being used in demonstrations. I find I keep raising the volume to hear you speak, and then quickly lowering it again when you operate one of the power tools. Just my observation. Keep up with the building and sharing! It's awesome to watch.

More often then not,they don't realize the audio is off,which ruins everything.audio is 50 percent of the whole video.

I just built my swing off of your plan. I changed up a few things though. I used 2x6 for the base and for the arms. I also cut the front arm post at an angle to match the rear angle, and I made the swing 6' long. I wanted it long enough to lay down and take naps lol.
Awesome! I like that idea! A nap in the ol porch swing sounds pretty great right now.
I also want to make one longer. Did you change anything different other than cutting the base pieces longer? Wasn't sure if it needs additional support pieces? on the base?

Super nice and simple video to follow
It seems like the way you attach your chains will let the swing roll over if it gets tipped back too far. Such as person twisted around to sit sideways in the seat with feet up in the swing. You might consider moving the back chain anchor point up to the end of the armrest to prevent this. Otherwise great build !
We haven’t had an issue with that yet. I thought that would be a too. I think the base is heavy enough to offset it
I've done this project, and the only difference was drilling holes in the armrest and passing the chain through. That stops the rollovers, mostly.

Thank you. Started with your build, then spun out on my own for the aethsetics (less gaps between back slats and added some hickory planks with a light stain while staining the rest a deep red mahogoney. Looks fantastic. Easy build. Had a router, which really helps. Thanks again.
oh...I mounted the chains in different spots: front mount is the same, back mount it near the top of the backrest - very sturdy.

Did you use pressure treated 2x4’s? Are there advantages to it or does the stain provide enough protection??

I built a bench swing from a pallet not long ago. Mine has NO armrests so I cant use them for hook placement...I just used eye bolts with Quick links to connect upside down Y chains. Also, I bought seat belt like straps to wrap around tree branch to hang from. My issue is getting the bench swing to have that "tilt". I tried to sit and it automatically wanted to dump me back onto the ground. LOL! I think if I bring the eye bolts on the seat portion more toward the front of the seat it will bring that seat up just enough for a small tilt backwards? I hope that fixes the issue.
Yeah, it can be tricky to get that right. Thankfully, this design doesn’t want to dump you

Thank you so much. Honestly, I don’t know because my father in law attached them since it was his house. I’m guessing the studs were 16” on center, so maybe 48”?
Very nice video. But this is not built with "basic tools". It's misleading. I watched it because I have basic tools but this is not that helpful when you don't have the tools. Otherwise -thanks for the video
I appreciate the feedback. You could make all these cuts with a jig saw and a circular saw. I personally still consider a table saw and a miter saw “basic tools” but I guess not everyone thinks the same as me.
Just wonder if that back hook shlould be higher close to arm rest? Or as is? Any differents?
So, we’ve never had an issue where it is. But, the hooks could’ve been a little thicker. They’ve bent a little over time

I’m so sorry. I don’t know why I just now saw this comment. I have a link to the chains in the description, but for the eyebolts I recommend at least 5/16 inch hook screws. Preferably a little bit bigger
To the “basic tools” critics, a hand saw can do what a table/mitre saw can do,Philips screwdriver can do what a drill driver can do and a sheet of sand paper speaks for itself! ALL basic tools…so get to it! Love the video (for those of us that have advanced tools and skills) Very nice job!

I really like the design of the swing . So simple and easy looking to build . I’m defiantly going to be building this. One question. The hook screws you used … now when the chain hooks on and you are sitting with your weight pressed down seems like they would never move . My question is with use and swinging back and forth could those hook screws move and in turn , the chain slide off the hook screw? I would feel safer with a screw with enclosed loop and a Clevis or something . Idk . Not cutting you down I’m just thinking
They’ve never slipped off and it’s been over a year. The hook screws are starting to bend a little bit. You could probably go a little thicker on those

Thank you for the video, just wondering would pocket holes work as good in terms of strength? The reason I am asking because you would see less screws from the outside .
I actually believe they would be just fine as long as you use the longer screws. They are a lot stronger than most people think. I’ve hung cabinets with them
Just sink the screws and plug the holes.

Looks like you have that hung on a metal building. How did you hang it on metal?
The house is a traditional stick frame house, the lag screws are mounted right into the ceiling joists

What’s the length of the swing
Sorry, I don’t know how I missed your message. It is roughly 48” long. The arm rests stick out a little past that.
What are all the materials you need?

What stain did “you” end up using on it?
I believe it was espresso by minwax. I wouldn’t recommend the clear coat for outside jobs though, I just used a water based clear coat I had lying around and it hasn’t held up the greatest. It needs to be refinished now

We're moving to an apartment with a covered patio. I've dreamed of having a porch setting like this for over 50 years. I wonder how hard it would be for me to show your video to someone here in Israel to build one for us. you explained everything so well that even though they use the metrics system here, in glad to have an exact explanation of what we want.

Chains and hooks are very thin for this.
They do don’t they, but it’s actually made for a porch swing. It’s probably the 2x4s that make it look that way
