    I love how this is the first time we ever see John’s family. The whole game has been building up to this moment, and when it happens, it just feels right. The characters aren’t slowly revealing themselves. They come onto the screen exactly as how they were last time John saw them. It feels so much more real and impactful since this is considered a return to “normality” for John. We’ve never even heard John mention Uncle, but the second he comes on screen, we know exactly what kind of character he is lol. Great writing and acting. Classic Rockstar.

      John really did have an unfair life. He was born to a prostitute and a drunkard, his mother died during childbirth so he never had a mother figure, his father drank heavily and probably abused him until he died when John was only 8, and then he gets picked up by a gang of outlaws and from there his fate was sealed. Red Dead Redemption's story is kind of a perfect post-revisionist's western or really just a quintessential American story.
    Freedom, family, desperation, attempted redemption, all to be denied and controlled by the influence of the powerful and wealthy. John, Arthur, all of the gang, their real struggle was of self-determination, and at every point they were denied it. Who they were was dictated, or told to them, by outside actors who wielded power.
    They thought they were a family, until the world said they were a gang so they were a gang. John thought he could be a husband and father, but the world said he was a killer, so he was made to kill. Abigail thought her son could be normal man, unburden by his parents' past, but the world said he was the son of a killer and whore, so he became a murdering whoreson.
    That's the American story, the struggle, and inevitable failure, to define oneself whilst the outside world determines who you are.

      This explanation would work if the members of the gang weren't criminals before joining. Dutch and Hosea were wanted criminals before forming the gang. In fact, they tried to rob each other. Sure, you can make excuses for them, like how Arthur and John were orphans on the street, Lenny's father was just getting revenge, etc., but those don't, and shouldn't, give them a free pass. Obviously the indoctrination from Dutch didn't help either. The point of RDR2 was Arthur realizing the kind of people they really were. The best comparison points are when in Chapter 2 Arthur tells Agent Milton that his only crime he committed was not living the way society wanted him to, vs in Chapter 6 Arthur tells the Sister that he has lived a bad life. The point of RDR is that you can't outrun your past. Arguably, the overarching story is showing that Actions have Consequences, but in accepting the consequences, you can often find redemption.

      one thing that was emphasized by reviewers who knew westerns and narratives at the time was how excellent of a choice it was to tell a non-spaghetti western. in using tropes common to Leone's and Eastwood's shared and unshared filmographies, but subverting them in-favor of the advancing civilization of America was a brilliant way to tell a story that rang brilliantly true for gaming's target demographic (at the time): 16-25 years. that age group in particular would empathize with John's desire to redeem past inadequacies, would feel the rapidly approaching end of the Wild West as if it were the rapidly approaching need to be an adult, unlike typical westerns which can be fun to watch but you hardly ever really care for the main characters outside of a traditional archetypal narrative connection. we naturally choose the good guys and root for them, but that doesn't mean we ever really relate to their actions as a whole.

    I'll never forget the first time I played this. When you've finished the job, taking care of the old gang and completing that chapter of John's life once and for all, and you get to ride home. You think it's going to be another of those long rides or maybe just a fade to black, but then the strains of a song start playing, something that hasn't played in the game before. You hear lyrics this time. You hear the lines "I know the only compass that I'll need, is the one that leads back to you." It's over, finally, and you feel that desperate longing in John's heart to get back home. Is your family going to be alright? Will they even be there? It's the only thing you can think about until you get here, to this point, and only when it begins you can finally breathe a sigh of relief. They're home. You're home. It's over now.

      I think it’s the Romeo and Juliet effect. We know Arthur is going to die from a certain point in the game (maybe even at the beginning if you were able to use the first game for context clues) and yet despite the fact that we know whats going to happen we hope desperately that it won’t. So when it does happen, all of that hope goes away and we’re just left with the sad reality.
      John’s death was relatively sudden and was probably meant to be more shocking than sad. Obviously due to the nature of RDR2 following up RDR1 they couldn’t take the same shocking approach.
      And I actually disagree with the notion that John wasn’t okay with dying. Sure he absolutely had more to lose but all he was concerned about at that point was his family’s safety. Also note that the very last thing he does before he dies is throw away his pistol. In the end John more or less won, despite the world’s efforts to bring him back, John really did leave that life behind him. He wasn’t a criminal anymore, he was a family man and a good enough person to sacrifice himself for the well-being of others.
      Edit: Well I mean depending on how you played RDR1 anyway.

      Just to clarify I never said john was scared of dying I merely stated that the whole game he went all around the map trying to kill or capture bill, javier and dutch. He literally did everything to see his family and keep them safe and then when he finally has a peaceful life with them again it gets taken away.

    Rdr 1 is still now very playable. A great game. I just imagine with the new graphics engine and such it would be even better. I actually think rdr1 would be better then 2 if it would be made in rdr2 graphics and play mechanics. I personally like John a little more then Arthur.

    • @quinnmarchese6313
      @quinnmarchese6313 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      red dead two isn't even really on a newer graphics engine. RAGE has seen various add-ons since, yes, particulalurly DX11-DX12 and Vulkan renderer support and physically based rendering, but the big gameplay pillars of that engine are exactly the same, the biggest differences come directly from the target consoles having more power, both graphically and computationally. Euphoria for example has exactly the same uses in RDR and RDR2, for simulating how people slide off their horses when shot, or how they stumble off a balcony, or over geometry as the NPC tries to get away. i loved John back in the day, but i do think Arthur beats him in writing quality, but only just.

    There is something about RDR1 that even RDR2, despite being a great game, can't match. I hated how they turned John weak in RDR2. There was something really exceptional about RDR1. The lines were great, the atmosphere was unique, the side quests were memorable and John was a great character. Loved the chemistry between John and Bonnie. Wish they had given Arthur more love interest interactions in RDR2.

      They didn’t turn John weak in 2, I’m playing through it again. John was suppose to be for himself/ a fighter, abandoning the game before chapter 1. But through the game, specifically In chapter 4, we see him start caring, for Abigail and Jack. Standing up to Dutch in camp, all coming to a head in 6. We see the growth of John into the person we love in 1, especially in the epilogue, which I’m excited for against
