    My house has been an interesting building science project for me. I have a raised ranch in Northern VT, if you put a piece of Rockwool insulation in the 2x6 wood wall with nothing to air seal it from the inside, the plywood will get condensation on it in winter. However if you put a piece in the 2x4 wall against the block below it nothing happens behind the insulation. The concrete floors and cmu half walls have been painted with dry lock.

    A best build approach comparison for hot humid environments is well needed!

    It would be interesting to see how you would insulate and control moisture in a shipping container house. I know it’s a bit off topic but it’s not an easy one.

      Nobody should be trying to live in a shipping container.

    5:21 "Now we do need to excavate part of the slab in order to install the drainage mat and the perimeter drainage tile ... and a fresh stone bed that's been wrapped in filter fabric..." Yeah, I'll get right on that.

    Wondering where the water goes that comes down the dimple mat???? Also, the sill plate, should at least be PT. Studs PT??

    Great work, amazing details. Some clarification for which climate zone are you referring to would be extra useful.

    Is there no better way to attach foam and sheetrock to the walls than to sandwich them between studs? Metal studs rust, wood studs rot and burn, and both compromise insulation and budgets.

  • @kah5324
    @kah5324 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    are you saying, in the first solution, that a dimple mat could work without running into an interior french drain? IE for block walls without severe water management issues.

  • @FreekHoekstra
    @FreekHoekstra 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Why not just install the rain screen on the outside?
    The dimple Matt on the inside is also concerning where would the water go? or is it just for air to circulate? Then again, to circulate to where?

      Because it's America! No one will tell Americans how to do those things correctly. And especially not Europeans with their dry and comfortable basements! 😂

    Thoughts on using Insofast as both insulation and a capillary break since it has channels on the back?

    Also never paint interior surfaces of below-grade blocks or water will get trapped in the block and degrade the concrete.

      Yes! And don't install any 60-inch sinks there either! 36-inch is the perfect size! (Inside joke).

    Question about this: suppose a house has a monolithic slab build on rocky soil and some of the rocks are above grade. Therefore, the base of the foundation walls are thicker up to about 1 ft above the slab all around the house, with rocks within it. Above the thicker section the wall resumes normally with cinder blocks and mortar. My though process says to seal the exterior wall with stucco and silica paint and the inside insulate only above that wider section at the bottom, thus leaving the bottom section breathable. On the rest of the interior wall the idea is to refinish the surface with a 1" thick coat of mortar, then apply penetrating concrete sealant/hardener only on this upper section of the wall. Do you see any problems with this approach? My thought process here is that the outside sealing with the silica paint will prevent most of the moisture coming in from the outside and then the exposed bottom side of the inside wall will allow the concrete to breathe if there is any residual moisture.

    A guide to exterior insulation of CMU walls in a hot, humid climate (Florida) would be fantastic. I have ideas, but I have yet to find an expert to confirm that they are solid.

    For a garage application where any condensation may be acceptable on the floor inside the space, could you replace the drain tile & sump pump in favor of an interior weep screen, and terminate the interior insulation a few inches above the floor inside the space?

    So what about a situation where you have a cinder block from foundation to roof with a brick exterior. 🤔

    Right on great video. Masonry loves to wick moisture. Masonry needs a way to dry out and remove the moisture it wicks. I hate icf walls the membrane is only thing that keeps the moisture out. And most don't have anyway for masonry to dry out except rim joist. Which people usually spray foam. Smh. Did cmu block north wall with vermiculite cores, 4 inches of mineral wool batt and board , low perm vapor barrier 0.17 (“dry”) to as much as 3.8 perms (“wet”), 2 inch air gap, and 12 inch masonry veneer. Insulated piers and foundation. North wall will have lots of snow off the skillion roof. Making a snow berm in winter. With 6 foot frost depths and where I hit hard pack. To support weights of masonry heating appliances. Masonry stove, white oven, and 2 masonry heaters. And having timber frame need to dry it right.

    if you didn't want to add perforated pipe or any moisture control below slab, could you just use a rainscreen system on the walls for some air flow and then tape it all with rigid insulation as a more cost effective solution?

    Can a person put the seal then dimple mat/alternative on the outside, then insulate and side over that to keep moisture off the walls and not lose interior space if you are in a place like Florida for example. ...

    One of the issues I see, the water can run down and come out the base of the block. This looks interesting

    I really love these vids. What are your thoughts about using Omni-block in the humid south for new construction/remodeling? Do you think it would still have moisture issues, even with the EPS foam sandwiched between the blocks?

    Instead of reconciling the fact that water can permeate your masonry wall. Why wouldn't it make more sense to waterproof the exterior of the wall. If today's regular concrete is in contact with water AKA moisture constantly, it will weaken. No offense, but this is a new way of doing things that have not been tested and seem like way Overkill. It seems like something an engineer who doesn't actually work in the field would use as an overcomplicated solution.
