UPDATE: Since some of you requested it, I have now added a template of the sheet I used in the video in the description of this video. You can make your own copy and rename things according to your own finances. A bit more info in the description box. Hope it helps! Please let me know if for some reason it doesn't work, and I'll try to fix it ASAP.

I've been tracking my finances via Excel for a few years and it's so rewarding! I update my spreadsheet weekly because I like the regular check ins, especially for categories like food and entertainment. Some areas I struggled with were budgeting for the expenses that went on my credit card but then not having a schedule for when I transferred money to pay it off. Now I check my cc every 2-3 days and transfer the balance in full (versus monthly). I also have a section for my investments because I love entering the numbers and seeing it grow. I'm also in Canada!

"Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It's quite simple, really: Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn't at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, so go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that's where you will find success."

I love this spreadsheet! Thank you!
    1. You can set conditional formatting on the monthly expenditure cells to, for example, turn red if the amount goes over the budget.
    2. You can add a column after the Budget column (make a new Column "C") to show if you are within budget for the year. For each row, enter a formula that sums the values of cells for that row (Jan to Dec) and divides by the number of cells with data (COUNTIF(B12:N12,NULL) to show how much you are over or under so far for the year. Note: It's been a few years since I used Excel so I probably don't have the best syntax but you get the idea.)

Forget typing sum and brackets etc when wanting to add up just select the column or rows and add an empty box at the end then click auto Sum or the Greek E button and it adds it up for you and fills that number in the empty box. Bit easier.

I'm trying to keep track of how much my CC spend is but also have it be included as part of my overall spending (as I will be using money from my checking account to pay off this card every month). Not really sure the best way to go about tracking for both at the same time without double counting? (Not sure if this makes sense).

I clicked to see if I can probably see amy adjustmemts my Excel expense sheet but seems like it's very similar. I haven't been doing a good job with tracking my Bank account and paid a $5 from December 2022 so I am watching this video for motivation to do better. The pandemic got me fucked up eith stay at home for 1 year made me lazy.

What an amazing tutorial and a spreadsheet. I only have one question, when it comes on putting your income sources, are you putting them on gross income or net income??? Assuming someone with a regular job and investment or side hustle, for a job it will be tax right away, in short, net income. On the other hand, making an income on investments and side hustle, such as, capital gains and dividends is I consider gross income. Also, it will only be tax on filing season. Which part of the income should I put on the spreadsheet, the gross/pre tax or the net/after taxes to make everything accurate??? Thank you and have a great day.

Good video. Tip: take an excel class, =Sum() is not the answer to everything

6 months late but how would you fill out the bank account and credit card portions? From what I grasped in the video, I think you track how much is in your account at the beginning of the month for bank accounts and for credit cards, it's how much you've accumulated within a month?

Nope at the end of the month!! Everything I do for each month is calculated at the end of the month. So I would state how much money each of those accounts has at the end. For credit cards, I'll put in whatever my statement balance was for that month - the exact number that's on my statement. Thankfully, my statements come pretty close to the end of the month, so it works out that way... but if your credit card statements come midway through the month or something and you want to reorganize yourself, I know some credit card providers will let you change the statement closing date by calling them up! :) hope that makes sense!
