The original game was revolved solely on that and more deeper and wider varieties of combat with open world gameplay for some parts. However, Ubisoft wanted the game done sooner than expected and the game was reduced to the mini game based style instead. The shooting parts are the remainders of what could've been reminiscent of what the original game was supposed to be like. Not that what we got was bad, but that was how it was supposed to be.

@kizwiz6 It was confirmed that Ubisoft will be separating rayman and the rabbids for the sake of both rayman fans and rabbid fans.... so probably we will still see more rabbid games without rayman himself..
Since the Rabbids (and by dlc, Rayman) have made a successful comeback with their crossover with Mario, maybe this old prototype can be revived with a new 3d Rayman game; invasion of the Raving Rabbids.
Honestly I would love to see not only serguei return as a boss battle But I would also love to see rayman rabbid peach, and rabbid mario battle these prototype versions of the rabbids

The Rabbids actually looked menacing here, I love it, I don't hate the way they look in the final game and onwards, but they just turned stupid.
