Asterism are an instrumental power trio from Fukuoka, Japan. They consist of:
    Haruka Noma, guitars (“HAL-CA”)
    Miyu Yoshinaka, bass
    Mio Yoshinaka, drums
They were formed in 2014 when Noma was 11 and the brothers were 12 and 14 respectively. They were all playing at a talent fair for young musicians in their hometown, when one of the music scouts noticed them, had a hunch and suggested they play together. Most of their current youtube catalogue is fan-made live video footage, much of it at the Hard Rock Café in Fukuoka. There are also a few clips from their one tour in the U.S., when they played Austin and Los Angeles.
They are all phenomenal talents, but the big draw has been Noma, known by her first name Haruka or by her stage name Hal-Ca. She has been likened to a reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan all in one. Even in the Japanese scene, with its overload of extraordinarily technical shredders, she stands out. She also writes most of the band’s music. Miyu is a virtuoso on the bass, plays both 4-string and 7-string, and has his own shred solos in a number of their songs.
Best clips to start with are:
“Rising Moon” (their first professional MV): th-cam.com/video/IfxMi0Bx4x0/w-d-xo.html

Some of this repeats what others have said. The drummer and bassist are brothers, Miyu the bassist is 19, Hal-ca the guitarist is 18, and Mio the drummer is 21. They met in 2014 at a festival for young musicians. The started out doing covers of metal bands like Metallica, Dio, and Babymetal. Bootsy Collins, a bassist for James Brown, helped produce their 1st album, Ignition, and appears on it along with the guitarist Buckethead. While mostly instrumental they have had Maki Oyama as a guest vocalist on covers. They have brought out two EPs and 2 albums in 4 years. Guernica is the latest and has more prog and jazz influences and is more introspective. Guernica started out as a digital-only 6 song EP but they have since added more songs and are bringing out Guernica+a on physical media. Hal-ca is restrained in this one, though that is appropriate for this album. She can be really wild, a born rock star. They performed at SXSW in Austin in 2019 at a few other places in Texas and in LA where they finally met Bootsy in person.

I was late, unfortunately, by more than an hour, because the plane from Moscow to Tokyo was late, and I missed the plane from Tokyo to Fukuoka. Had to take the next one, and it was delayed 🤦‍♂️
Nevertheless, now I have a photo with me and them together, hanging on my wall. MIYU the bassist was very kind. He saw me being rather shy, and said, "Do you want a photo with us?" I felt like my mind was shattered into pieces. I mumbled, "Yes," and now I have that photo, where MIYU is throwing his hand around my shoulders, MIO the drummer is in the centre, and HAL-CA is showing the 🤘 sign on the right.

Not the worst introduction to ASTERISM. They actually decided to play "live in studio" their whole new album "Guernica+". The album is obviously based on Picasso's famous painting, and on the drama it symbolised - those kids are not only virtuosos, but also very well-educated young persons with a huge artistic sensibility. The band was formed around 6 years ago (yes, they were 13) and is even better on stage - Hal-Ca (guitar) is a true guitar-heroin in front of an audience. I really suggest you to listen to the whole album, it's more proggy than their former hard/metal sound ... and at 19 it's only the beginning of an amazing journey I hope.

    • @VladimirChupin
      @VladimirChupin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

GUERNICA is a concept album. I would even say it's like a rock opera, only without vocals. And as such, it must be listened to from start to finish as a single whole. It tells the story of that city, which has fallen under the Luftwaffe strikes. Yes, it was Picasso's painting which triggered HAL-CA's interest first, but then they have studied the history together, and created this amazing album, actually goring through those events. If you read the article in Wikipedia, you'll understand where the names of the songs are coming from.

    Ryan!
Greetings from a windy Chicago-like Shizuoka City,! But Mount Fuji is magnificent half-white on a blue sky backdrop!
Sorry, but this might turn into another novel! Take a long drink along!
Most non-Japanese Japanese rock band lovers mostly live abroad and need some extra knowledge, historical, geographical, cultural and musical, except for some super-fans like Gary Holloway and Vladimir Chupin.
First of all, the male-dominated music industry basically resides in Tokyo and around in the Central Island of Honshu. These Tokyo-people (but 90% of them are imports, snobbish and self-righteous, foreign residents included!) despise"country people" from other islands: Hokkaido in the north used to be a penitential island, Shiokoku south of Hiroshima is a "monastery" refuge, Kyushu (Fukuoka, Nagasaki, etc) was a hard-life island with its coal mines and heavy industries, Okinawa Island became part of Japan again only in 1972.
To go back to Asterism, they hail and still live in Fukuoka. Kyushu people are hard-bitten Japanese, both men and women, which explains their acceptance of mixed groups. Incidentally, Band Maid's Miku is also from Kyushu (Kumamoto) which explains a few things, does it not?
Strangely enough, because of this internecine situation difficult to imagine for Westerners, foreign fans become an invaluable help when it comes to make these groups better-known. After all,Tokyo-based musical industry have no wish for another single-minded Band Maid!
Japan used to have some great rock bands back in the 70's~90's, but they lost to the pop-crap oriented music industry who found it easier to sell to mediocre fans, like with the disco music killing rock in Europe and the Americas.
No wonder that Jimmy Page wanted to meet Akane!
So the situation is very simple: it is up to reactors like you, Ryan (I cannot mention them all!), and super fans like Gary and Vlad to create the stimulus audiences need thanks to the Internet we did not have in good ole times!
Take good care until the next rant! LOL
    Best regards,
    Robert-Gilles

Recently, I feel that the home of Rock music has moved from the US and Western Europe to Japan and Northern Europe.

They are an all instrumental band, which I don't mind, since they kick ass. But if you want to get a glimpse of how they sound with a singer, check out their cover of Loudness' In the Mirror with the amazing Maki Oyama: th-cam.com/video/3thAXV4laAA/w-d-xo.html

That 7 string bass was custom made for Miyu at 17 y.o. by ESP (not available for anyone else). Hal-Ca just pounds that old Yamaha/Pacific to death but it keeps going. They have been together since she was 11 writing, arranging and playing their own fusion of Metal/hard Rock/Jazz. Wicked good and this trio is as talented as Cream (1966-68) except they have no vocals (wrong their music is their vocals). If you want to see that 7 string bass and Hal-Ca's wicked string work try Dawn LIVE (small club due to ages and lack of exposure) Hal-Ca is 16 in this video (th-cam.com/video/buQPvINJcA0/w-d-xo.html). Fantastic instrumental band that is still after 5 years a hidden gem on YT (just like D_Drive with Yuki on guitar struggling for fans and views). Kids just graduated High School so look out now that Babymetal's label signed them. Hal-Ca has that Hendrix vibe (born to be a rock star especially LIVE).

I love the way they all solo at the same time, if that makes sense?! 🤔😂 Also I think that Hal-Ca is rapidly becoming my favourite guitarist...just don't tell Kanami!

I've just come from wave potter's reaction and loved them. My kind of music except for their more speed / power metal type tunes.

It's a younger band than Babymetal in the same office as Babymetal. It's a teenager.
