Most of the things you say are choices from the auto industry. Low sales volumes are down quite simply to price. Sports cars were once very popular. Until the 70's, pretty much everything was available as a coupe. Even Volvo and Saab offered coupés, and they were often cheaper to buy than the 4-door equivalent. And therein lies the key: sports cars should be cheap. All of the arguments about having sports cars for leisure instead of an only vehicle, about sharing it with a significant other and carrying more luggage, are based on the idea that sports cars should be sold to older and wealthier people. Sports cars should be aimed at younger people and priced accordingly. They should be small: with lower weight and far superior aero, they should blow everything else on the market out of the water in terms of fuel economy and environmental impact. They should be priced so that young people who are just getting their first job should see them as not only attractive, but in fact an economically sound investment. The problem is that the industry has arbitrarily decided that sports cars, the simplest bodystyle out there, should be a luxury.
