9:28 Who could have thought that Sony actually beat the 2021 Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio and 2018 HP Spectre Folio when it comes to the hinge design. It did showed that Sony was ahead of the times.
This review really influenced me and helped me with my purchase. I just ordered the Vaio Flip 14. I love watching all of your reviews because you actually know what you're talking about! Thanks Lisa!
Hello Lisa, I have a few questions to ask you about the Sony VAIO Flip. My first question is in regard to the rumors of bad Wifi connection. If its true, has the bad Wifi connection been fixed, or do you think it will be fixed? My second question is whether or not the fan gets loud even when doing nothing? Do you think they will be able to fix this, if it is true? My third and last question has to do with Windows 8.1. Since Windows 8.1, I have heard that there has been problems with the touch screen not work and the laptop crashing. Do you think they will fix this, or will you have to avoid updating to solve the problem?
Thank you so much Mobile Tech Review for covering active digitizer tablet pen systems. Not only coverage, but in-depth excellent coverage. Most other tech reviewers have no clue about value of pen digitizers for us creative types. TY again. Don't get me started on touch, ... finger painting is for 2nd graders. ;)
I have to be honest with you Lisa, I have been handling and testing the Surface Pro 2 as well as the Flip 13 and the Sony seems to be winning out. It really does not feel heavier while holding with one hand in tablet mode and may actually be easier to balance in most situations such as lap, bed, and holding from below on palm of hand. When in tablet mode, there is no exposed keyboard which is great for feel and setting the unit down. Even with the Surface Pro 2, you have to fold around the attached key board which feels somewhat awkward. Separating the keyboard on SP2 doesn't work well in situations where one is walking around such as a hospital, job site, etc. I would love to hear your opinion on the comparison; maybe even in a smack down.
Hi Lisa, It would be great if you could please answer my question. I have been eyeing on this product for a long time and I was wondering about using the pen. I will be using the pen all the time using programs like One Note and Pdf Annotator. I was wondering at what distance you start seeing the tip of the pen (i.e. at what distance (cm) from the screen you get palm rejection). This is really important to me because I had the duo 13 and the distance was around 1.5 cm, so my palm would touch the screen first and make a mark everywhere. Thanks so much!
Hey Lisa, why does everyone call it the flip when on Sony's website it's the fit? Or are they 2 different systems? Also, is a solid state drive better than a hybrid drive? Thanks for your time
Lisa, thanks for the review, The fan noise can be reduced basically via the VAIO settings. I don't hear it after doing that change. I originally was going to get the 15 inch but got the 13 instead and I've been enjoying it so far. Haven't upgraded to Windows 8.1 yet though. It may be my settings but I haven't gotten more than 5 and a half hours of battery life. Still, I like it. Again great review as always.
***** Go to Control panel and select VAIO Control Center. In the Power and Battery section is a CPU and Fan sub-section. It has 3 possible settings, Silence, Standard and performance. Also note that within the VAIO Control Center are other settings such as Display Mode, Keyboard Light settings. As for gaming, I'm not a gamer per say, so I wouldn't know, but as Lisa mentioned in the video, it seems for really intensive games the bigger 15A with optional dedicated graphics card would be better.
The trouble with choosing silent mode for the fan in Vaio Settings, as I mentioned in the review, is that it cuts CPU speed in half. That's fine for MS Word and playing video, but for more demanding tasks it's not a great solution.
MobileTechReview Lisa, I am still waiting for my 13" to arrive and am very disappointed on the news that the fan is so loud. Since the VAIO settings cuts the CPU speed in half, how will I be able to reduce the fan? I would really appreaciate your response. And great review Lisa!
vioscharr88 Until Sony releases a BIOS update to change fan behavior, there's no way to get it to use the fan less often or more quietly without going to half-speed silent mode.
Jeremy Lelea No it is hardly on. In fact I have not heard it since the update. I have browsed the Web and watched movies, nothing to really tax the device.
MobileTechReview This is again a great review! Thank you, Lisa. What will your preference be if you were to choose between Surface Pro 2 and Vaio Flip 13 (other than the difference in screen sizes).
Lisa has a lot to do these days: SONY VAIO flip 14 and 15 Dell XPS 13 and 15 (haswell) LENOVO yoga 2 pro, thinkpad yoga, thinkpad x240, thinkpad t440s/t440 ASUS ux302LA, UX302LG, ux301LA.
Lisa, great review as usual. You noted that the memory is soldered on...that's a real bummer if not show stopper for me. Do you know if that is the case for the 15" as well?
Awesome video Lisa, another option for me to consider. Comparison video against Vaio Duo 13? Also did you experience the awful wifi performance on the Vaio Duo 13?
Love your reviews Lisa!! This is the laptop that I finally decided to buy. I pre-ordered it on day one, but I am still waiting for it. I was getting cold feet about my purchase a little until I saw this review so thanks so much for going over all the details and calming me down! I'm getting the impression that it's not quite for you though :P. Funnily enough one of the main reasons that I bought this is for art applications. I know all about the N-Trig compatibility issues, but I am happy with the ones it currently supports and if it does end up having Photoshop and Z-brush support then I will be over the moon :).
Hey Lisa I just bought this and love it. Like you said, pen not included. Unfortunately Sony is no longer making the pen. Where can I purchase the generic pen you're using or can you recommend another pen that will also work? I am new to N-Trig (used to Waccom) Are the pens interchangeable? Please let me know
Hey Lisa, great review. I just ordered the 15" version with the higher resolution screen but won't get it for another couple weeks or so. Hoping you can get your hands on it first and do a review :)
Great video as always.. Really like this laptop. I only got one question, if I'm thinking of getting one now, How can I differentiate between the U series and the Y series of this machine ? Thank you.
Hi Lisa , nice review like always. Just have fast question for you. Do you think ASUS will announce new taichi ultrabook so I wait or just go with old taichi ? Thanks
Hi Would you recommend its performance for HD editing? (not on a professional level) Is there any news yet on the loud ventilation being fixed on the later models?
Hey! I heard that a new version of the fit flip pc 13 is out on the market, do you know anything about the fan issue?? Is this problem solved from out of the box?
Great review! I was wondering if for this model, would using a "1TB (5400rpm) + 16GB NAND flash HHD" over a SSD be a bad idea? Is there much of a difference in speed with these two?
Question... is it smooth going into portrait mode and back to normal? does the onscreen keyboard pop up smoothly when your in the presentation or the tablet mode?
How is the fan noise? I hear that people range from thinking it's too loud and thinking it's fine....I'm getting an ultra book for law school and I don't want to have the vacuum cleaner in the class (but I like the ability to write notes on this one)
Hey Lisa, Just wanna check, I seen and heard some reviews about slow touch screen response and that the touch screen would stop working after 20-30mins of use. Is it true?
Hey Lisa, thank you so much for the review. I had no idea this laptop existed, and was considering the surface pro 2 but now have this to consider. Incase you happen to see this, would you recommend the surface pro 2 or this laptop? Im a computer science student who needs to write notes on the screen with a pen, would like excellent battery life, and if possible loud speakers. Thank you again! Love the channel
im thinking about buying the sony flip 14a model, but i recently heard that the flip 11a model had overheating problems n has been recalled.do u think ill get the same problem if i buy the 14a model?
Thanks Lisa for this wonderful review. I'm using this laptop. I've been using active digitizers for 6+ years to take notes and would like to add few things from that persepective. Unlike my previous HP Elitebook 2740p(matte screen), this screen has too much glare. This can be very uncomfortable when writing in tablet mode if there are lights on the ceiling(in the portion infront of you -- use laws of reflection to estimate the best position to sit). Is there any anti-glare coating that can reduce glare w/ hurting the touch and digitizer accuracy? Also, unlike wacom pens, this one has a battery and is kinda heavy. Moreover, the battery causes the centre of gravity to shift upward to the upper half of the pen. I personally find both these aspects of the pen mildly annoying. Also, Sony could have made a small hole in the overhang to make is possible to tether the pen to the laptop(like HP 2740p). It would be great if you could do a comparison b/w this laptop and the lenovo thinkpad yoga. That one has a wacom pan(w/ dock) and claims to have some anti-glare coating. Although it looks glossy in the videos. I guess these 2 laptops are probably the best choices for serious note-takers
Hi, I'm thinking about getting the 15 version of this, specifically SVF15N18PXB. But I wonder, do you know how it compares to The Dell Precision M3800 Workstation that's coming out in about the same time frame?
Does the palm rejection work well? Do i have to bring the tip of the pen very close before it starts? Because this wouldnt be like natural note taking... Does the palm rejection work better on Surface Pro 2? Or isnt there a difference?
i believe you missed talking about the keyboard of the device. I tried the sony vaio duo keyboard in store and the shallowness made typing a bad experience. I tried the sony vaio pro and i had a VERY nice typing experience (i reached my max word per minute on the duo :O) i would be very greatful if you can tell me how the keyboard on the vaio flip is, or at least which keyboard (duo or pro) matches the flip's keyboard. Thank you :)
bought this a year ago, pretty nice still. fan got fixed with updates. not loud. I use a cheap HTC scribe pen with it and it works perfectly $10... vs $40 the only stupid thingnis the web cam... I would have preferred the 5mp camera in the useful webcam place.... save thw money of the extra shooter.
Hi Lisa. Thank you for this review! I've been waiting for it for a while since some of the reviews I've read online were sort of flawed, but I knew I could count on this review to tell it how it is. I just have one question: do you know if the ram is soldered on board for the 15 inch version, because Sony limited the ram to 12gb in Canada, but I could use as much as I can get.
There is a teardown video made by Sony on TH-cam that shows the 15 (or it may be the 14 since both have the same internals) that shows the ram, harddrive/ssd and wlan can be upgradable. I myself did a teardown on the 13A (also on youtube) and my 13A has the ram soldered on board, but the drive and wlan can be upgraded. Although the SSD on the 13A Sony is upgradable Sony used the M.2 type for the SSD whereas on the 14 and 15 they used regular sata which is more available to upgrade.
Seems Sony is not distributing that machine very fast, especially outside Sony store. Together with the issue with the noisy fan, do you think Sony is not pushing distribution because they are thinking about a new improved version? Will you suggest buying this or the Thinkpad Yoga w active digitiser?
Hey Lisa! I am looking for a new convertible laptop and this on looks great! So much better than the Acer R7 (Thank GOD). I love the sleek design, and really dont mind the way it lays at an angle in tablet mode. Thankfully it has Haswell inside and, a must for me, 15 inches. I was wondering what you think the best convertible laptops out right now are. Thanks, keep making these great videos! ~~~Oh and go for the SMACKDOWN!!!
Thanks for this review, Lisa - it's by far the most thorough one I've seen so far. Given that the actual temperature of the CPU seems quite cool with the fan running, I am wondering if something like the utility SpeedFan could resolve the fan problem. It seems difficult to configure, though.... Too bad the Sony's own fan utility seems to be rather limited.
9:28 Who could have thought that Sony actually beat the 2021 Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio and 2018 HP Spectre Folio when it comes to the hinge design. It did showed that Sony was ahead of the times.

i would really like to see a comparison viddeo between the sony vaio flip 13 and the lenovo yoga 2 pro
I would love a Smackdown of both Vaio Duo 13 and Vaio Flip 13, and are you going to review the Vaio Tap 11?
I have to be honest with you Lisa, I have been handling and testing the Surface Pro 2 as well as the Flip 13 and the Sony seems to be winning out. Summer 2020 and this beast of a laptop still going strong! Triluminous on this still better than my MBP
Great to see you Review VAIO Flip
i planing to buy VAIO Flip to but 15 inchs

Lisa, I am still waiting for my 13" to arrive and am very disappointed on the news that the fan is so loud.
H Lisa, Gr8 stuff. Can you please do a smackdown of duo 13 and multiflip 13
On May 1 st 2014, Sony put an update to the bios on their driver website which totally fixes the fan problem. The Flip is now as quiet as a mouse.
So the fan isn't on all of the time John or is it just more quiet somehow but still on all of the time? Thanks a lot.
Jeremy Lelea No it is hardly on. In fact I have not heard it since the update. I have browsed the Web and watched movies, nothing to really tax the device.
Wow thanks for getting back to me.
MobileTechReview This is again a great review! Thank you, Lisa. What will your preference be if you were to choose between Surface Pro 2 and Vaio Flip 13 (other than the difference in screen sizes).
We'll be uploading a smackdown between the Surface Pro 2 and Flip 13 today where I actually tell you my personal preference at the end.
Lisa has a lot to do these days:
SONY VAIO flip 14 and 15
Dell XPS 13 and 15 (haswell)
LENOVO yoga 2 pro, thinkpad yoga, thinkpad x240, thinkpad t440s/t440
ASUS ux302LA, UX302LG, ux301LA.
great review! i'm afraid the fan going off all the time will bug me too much. It's really between the dell venue pro 11 or the surface pro 2 now.
Lisa, great review as usual. You noted that the memory is soldered on...that's a real bummer if not show stopper for me. Do you know if that is the case for the 15" as well?
Great Review Lisa. Covered everything but graphics benchmarks. Could you provide the 3D Mark 11 and cinebench scores? Thanks
I have been waiting for this review. Thank you very much, Lisa.
Hey Lisa! Great review :) could you make a comparison with the Flip and the Samsung ativ book 9 plus? Cheers!
Any Tap 11 reviews coming up Lisa? Great review btw!
Can you please do a comparison between this and the yoga 2 pro??? Great review by the way!
Thank you for the rapid response. :-)
However, I am still curious about whether it comes equipped with "IR Blasters".
Thanks for the mini active digitizer/pen review. But I would say there is some lag, especially if you compare it with the Surface's Wacom system.
Very nice. Will you be reviewing the Yoga 2 Pro?
We will review the Yoga 2 Pro and the ThinkPad Yoga. Lenovo is taking a long time to get review units out to us reviewers.
Thanks, I've been awaiting the release of the Thinkpad Yoga, but i have yet to hear an absolute date. Hopefully Lenovo can get it together.
MobileTechReview How was the gaming? I am assuming Portal 2 and Skyrim are fine but no Battlefield. So, better than Surface Pro 2, worse, or the same?
Davis Hague Surface Pro 2 has actually been a little quicker-- Microsoft's optimizations are very effective (both with Core i5 and 8 gigs RAM).
MobileTechReview thanks for the quick response!!
im all about the hybrid convertibles....and i just purchased a 15in thanks to this review....i was on the edge but i think it was a good choice
Very interesting. Is it possible to rest one's wrist on the screen while using the pen?
So torn between this and yoga 2 pro. My best buy is sold out of yoga 2 pro so I haven't held one yet. This Sony is slick.
Awesome video Lisa, another option for me to consider. Comparison video against Vaio Duo 13? Also did you experience the awful wifi performance on the Vaio Duo 13?
nice design.

how muc hwas it when you saw it?
Love your reviews Lisa!! This is the laptop that I finally decided to buy. I pre-ordered it on day one, but I am still waiting for it. I was wondering if you could do a "vs" or comparison video of the Lenovo yoga 2 pro vs/comparison Vaio flip?
Sony VAIO Flip 13, Apple MacBook Pro 13 , Sony VAIO Pro 13
At which display device is better? Thank you.
Hi lisa,
Two Quick questions. 1) Is there an option for inserting a sim card.
2) Does the digitizer/stylus dock externally or internally.
Thanks.
Hey lisa, I'm about to purchase this but one thing really concerns me is the fan noise. Did sony corrected this issue?
Thank you.
Smackdown please? I am torn between them!
Yay! I was so excited for this! Not just the laptop, the review too!
LISA!! What do you prefer, this or the ativ book 9 plus?
We just might do a smackdown between the ATIV Book 9 Plus and this to help you decide.
Thank You for the review,i have been waiting for it for weeks now.
Are you going to review the 15 inch version with the dedicated graphics ?
Hi Lisa , nice review like always. Just have fast question for you. Do you think ASUS will announce new taichi ultrabook so I wait or just go with old taichi ?
Thanks
Hi
Would you recommend its performance for HD editing? (not on a professional level)
Is there any news yet on the loud ventilation being fixed on the later models?
i loved this laptop when i saw it in the store. Great review! Now i know so much more about it.
PLEASE i need your advice , which one is better sony vaio pro 13 or sony vaio flip
Wow! Best mobile device ever. You're the best reviewer too Lisa!
If possible, how could I go about downloading programs that are on discs onto a laptop that doesn't have a cd/dvd thing?
Question... is it smooth going into portrait mode and back to normal? does the onscreen keyboard pop up smoothly when your in the presentation or the tablet mode?
How is the fan noise? I hear that people range from thinking it's too loud and thinking it's fine....I'm getting an ultra book for law school and I don't want to have the vacuum cleaner in the class (but I like the ability to write notes on this one)
Hey Lisa,
Just wanna check, I seen and heard some reviews about slow touch screen response and that the touch screen would stop working after 20-30mins of use. Is it true?
When is your review of the Dell Venue Pro 11 coming?
Is the keyboard hinge sturdy? I am afraid it might break in the future.

Incase you happen to see this, would you recommend the surface pro 2 or this laptop? Im a computer science student who needs to write notes on the screen with a pen, would like excellent battery life, and if possible loud speakers. Thank you again! Love the channel
Lisa,
Any chance of a review of the Dell Venue 8 Pro?
That background is awesome, where can I get it?
im thinking about buying the sony flip 14a model, but i recently heard that the flip 11a model had overheating problems n has been recalled.do u think ill get the same problem if i buy the 14a model?
Is this the same as the fit 13a advertised on the sony website?
Thanks Lisa for this wonderful review. I'm using this laptop. I've been using active digitizers for 6+ years to take notes and would like to add few things from that persepective. Unlike my previous HP Elitebook 2740p(matte screen), this screen has too much glare. Lisa, could you tell me if fan noise is still a problem please?
the fn + adjust brightness key is broken in windows 8.1 right? like you cant see the bar unlike the volume bar for fn + volume right?
Does the palm rejection work well? Do i have to bring the tip of the pen very close before it starts? Because this wouldnt be like natural note taking... Does the palm rejection work better on Surface Pro 2? Or isnt there a difference?

Would you be able to edit full hd video on this device?
Lisa, please do a comparison with the Duo 13.
Can you use the pen for photo retouching , in programs like photoshop ??
bought this a year ago, pretty nice still.

Does it has flex like carbon model(sony vaio pro I think)?
please do the sony vaio tap 11 and perhaps a comparison between it and the surface pro 2 i'm keen to know which one i should invest in
im waiting for the venue 11 pro review lol, cant wait for it. want to hear your thoughts first tho!

Hi Lisa,
I am about to buy a Dell XPS 12 (Haswell) , which one would you recommend XPS 12 or Flip 13 ?
Thanks,
How would you compare this one over the vaio pro 13? which one is better?
You're getting similar internals but the Flip 13 is for those who want tablet mode and the pen. The Pro 13 is a standard touchscreen Ultrabook.
Lisa can you do a Shmikety Shmack between the Lenovo Yoga Pro2 vs Sony Flip with similar setups
MobileTechReview·Hi i just bought a sony flip 14 core i 5 , the only problem drives me crazy is the problematic wifi , is there anyway to fix it?
i want this now!! awesome job with the review lisa :)
does this lap top have a lock capability to a cable? if so what cable attatches to it?

~~~Oh and go for the SMACKDOWN!!!
hi .... is the 15 one good for cad work .... like autocad and archicad software for architects
thanks in advance
Any chance you will be reviewing the ThinkPad Yoga with FHD and active digitizer? It would make a really good comparison video in the future.
Yes we'll review the ThinkPad Yoga and the Yoga 2 Pro as well.
Thanks for this review, Lisa - it's by far the most thorough one I've seen so far.
Given that the actual temperature of the CPU seems quite cool with the fan running, I am wondering if something like the utility SpeedFan could resolve the fan problem. It seems difficult to configure, though.... Too bad the Sony's own fan utility seems to be rather limited.
Absolutely love your reviews!
Keep up the great work...
