What I missed about Tom Wyner no longer doing the big villain roles nowadays is his voice. Sure, Richard Epcar does the charismatic villain voice well, but it’s a different flavor than Wyner’s- with Epcar being deliciously hammy and guttural. Wyner had a smooth, baritone of antiquity and experience- when he spoke you knew the guy was a villain with decades if not eons of perpetual asskicking under his belt and sound like the grimmest thing ever. It’s a shame because I don’t see that kind of voice for main villains in anime anymore.
Her, "You're gay aren't you?"
Him, "No, I'm not gay." ... "I used to have a younger brother."
Her, "That confirms it: you're gay."

Look, Jun? Can I call ya, Jun? I know you probably had a bad past, considering how you were found, but does basic empathy register in your cybernetic brain? Seriously.

You know it's a shame Bridget Hoffman was the voice for Jun (sp?) here bc she's one of my favorite voice actresses (I feel the same shame where Love Hina is concerned). I loved her as Lain, as Rem Saverem, as Irisviel von Einzbern (ofc), and she's the reason I have perfect blue on my watch list.
Well he finally answered a long time question of why he preferred dub over sub. The high pitched voices never bothered me, but everybody had different preferences.

lol I can actually see the Lucky Star opening leading some into madness. :P Not everybody can handle the super energetic and happy song.
Do not forget that watching subs reduces the attention on the neatness and beauty of the anime. It's a waste. And preferring subs is rather disrespectful towards the creators who created the animation.
I quite enjoyed Bianca, though I must admit the soundtrack and the visuals did play a large part in that. Still, I was not put-off by pretentiousness in the script or the recurring girl-centric story-points.
It's not GitS, but I didn't go in expecting it to be.
Stella Furst's "To Be Free" remains a great theme song.
While I thought this anime was OK overall, there were definitely parts of it (mostly moments of dialogue) that made me go "huh ... uh ... wha?"
Ah Tom Wyner. Has everybody seen Wolf's Rain's dub; he was absolutely amazing as Quent Yaiden. It makes you realize that he was kind of wasted playing "the villain of your childhood" as Sage put it; as good as he was at it.

Late but the amines (both of them) actually DO make it pretty clear 'what' Jun is and who: She's Sol Bianca, the ships android "persona". This is a bit clearer in the original anime (specifically the un-dubbed second episode) but April finds Sol Bianca and it's pretty clear she finds Jun on-board. Jun was truly alone having been either shut down and abandoned or left by her crew when the collapse happened. April's 'aunt' leaves her the pistol which itself is supposed to be a 'clue' to both finding and controlling Sol Bianca aka Jun. (Kind of on the nose since she's carrying it when she find Sol Bianca AND when she finds Jun) The 'names' written on Jun's body are supposed to be her original 'crew' which arguably probably didn't treat her like a person or an individual.
Yes "Gunter" is a VERY broken character, that's by design. Note about 15:14 we see a name NOT "Gunter" written/tattooed across his back in block script... somewhat similar to the 'block script' we see written on Jun's body. Later in the show we see that "Gunter" was a member of a group that pretty much all died trying to get to the "promised land" of Earth and we also see reveled that the so called "promised land" does not actually exist as "Gunter" tries to destroy the Sol Bianca rather than let the corrupt Earth "protectors" have it. (Which is exactly the opposite of his 'orders' and desires of that same corrupt leadership) Sol Bianca represents (obviously) much greater power than anything the Earth Army has at the moment, a lost 'glory' of old Earth which "Gunter" doesn't want them to have in the end. (And yes the pistol is somehow the 'key' to all this, though it's hard to tell if this was the 'original' pistol or another one leading {possibly{ to another lost Earth starship) This entire movie was essentially a 'prequel' to the original series meant to give some background on how the four gathered and the trials they initially encountered in learning to work together. Part of the 'problem' here is this is NOT a 'stand-alone' movie but was specifically made to give some background and depth to the original characters not be taken so much on it's own merits. (That's a problem for sure but in context of the series and fans it does actually make sense)
I forgot that this was the review where Sage plays that clip from the opening of (I think) Lucky Star. The bleeding of my ears will be a constant reminder tho.
the remarks from the June character are like that of KOTOR's dark side dialogued

+aderose Not to be rude, but while 80% of Gundam Wing's dub is awesome, some of it... well... it hasn't aged all that well, Gundam 00 on the other hand has a pretty good dub as well
Dragon Ball Z's original dubs are horrendous. Truly bad.
I really like the dub of Kill la Kill, but I understand that show isn't for everyone. Another dub I like- though far from the best- is Cyber City Oedo 808, simply for the hilarious cursing. The Ghost in the Shell SAC dub is great.

I miss the original... but it held up better in my mind, than in actual movie.
The characters were better, and the plot hooks weren't so forced... or so predictable.
Feb was captain, April was 1st mate, Janny was gunner, and Jun was... navigation. Still not clear on May, she kept inventory.

I find it stunning that the majority of anime have such horrid plots when there are tons of great unemployed writers out there.
I could get it if they all had simple Hollywood-style plots designed for young audiences, but since the case is the opposite, I just feel baffled.
Sure, japanese standards are different, but they can't be enjoying these kinds of scripts either.
Well most Anime is adapted from Manga, and Mangaka are artists not storytellers, though some do work in pars with one doing art and the other story. There are some where context is lost in translation, where it would of had some meaning in Japan or related to something but over here is meaningless.
CornishCreamtea07 which is the biggest thing I hate about anime. Not only do people constantly compare an anime to the manga and not even consider that an adaptation needs to stand on its own, but there's basically no creativity. It's even worse when you consider the amount of anime that are rip offs of French stories. And I'm not even going to get into movies like Edge of Tomorrow.

I have NEVER fought the urge to beat something repeatedly with a sledgehammer until it was dead so strongly before in my LIFE.
My preferred dub depends on theme. Cowboy Bebop is prime example where english dub works because of western atmosphere and good voice actors, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is example of anime which is japanese through and through, so japanese dub is obvious choice (plus two of main voice actresses are profesional singers, and in show is plenty of singing, so, there you go). Yes, DBZ or Pokémon or Digimon or other popular anime series I can't imagine without english/my mother language, dub, because I was rised on it and original japanese dub sounds strange and unnatural. Rarely I like both dubs, like in Black Lagoon, where differend person means not only another language, but slightly different personality of character, for example in Black Lagoon, japanese dub of main heroine is psychotic, more crazy and unsettling but english version is more on badass, brash, coarse but goodguy side with dark edge, same with her rival and others... japanese and english versions are both good, english version has slight edge because of one broken engrish speaking character, but overall hand to hand. I prefer english dub because of setting and because many characters are from USA but japanese dub is still solid.
Sol Bianca was great, still have it on vhs. Legacy, not so much...
I always go subs for Gainax; best screams in the business ;)

another reason why social issues should be handled properly within the context of the story. and not be allegories to real life issues unless the entire story is set in real life. a good example of this is zootipia. who a lot of people mistakenly believe it deals with real life social issues. when in reality the world it setup is so far beyond what our world is. that you could say that within context the social issues they face are nothing like the ones we face.
that said if your going to make something like this. you really have to do a good job putting it into the story. and you cannot do the stereotypical SJW i am right you are wrong thing. as social issues are not black and white. and thus treating them as if they were such simple questions. is kinda making a horrible and useless message that dose not further the discussion nor will it change anyone minds.

1:23 not really, DBZ has a poor Japanese dub yes and Lucky Star is just terrible regardless of the language, however that is just 2 shows. There have been plenty of Animes you've reviewed that would of been better subbed, and considering how much you complain about some of them I'm surprised you were even watching them dubbed.
