@@Hadeks_Marow Yep. Actually, bending =/= culture Is a key topic addressed in Legend of Korra. It criticized Aang for putting too much emphasis and attention on Tenzin just because he was able to Airbend. Tenzin later tried to impose the same thing in the new Airbenders, which is why he was not successful in convincing many of them to join. Bumi outright yells at him for being so insistent on forcible acculturation. Take Mako and Bolin; they don’t claim to be of two different cultures just because they bend different elements. They consider themselves to be equally native to Republic City, and are equally welcomed by their family in Ba Sing Se. Similarly, Opal considers herself just as much a Zaofu native as much as an Air Nomad. Or Varrick, who, while not a bender, hails from a Southern Water tribe background, but is at home anywhere; able to fit perfectly in the United Republic and the Earth Kingdom. Kya and Bumi also see themselves equally with Tenzin, as “Aang’s children” in terms of heritage and reject the idea that they are different just because of bending.

Well Maybe Aang isn't the only survived Airbender, But none of the other Airbenders were seen in ATLA and TLOK ( Except Airbenders were came after the Harmonic Convergence )
I think theres just one hole, how did Boomie get air bending from harmonic convergence because "the connection to his ancestors was restored" when he clearly already had the connection since tenzin could airbend. There was no connection restored there.
There is a prevailing theory that Ty Lee is a descendant of air nomads as her skin and eye color fit plus the chi blocking is similar to the teaching Aang was given at the air temple
Like some are saying, descendants of air nomads weren't necessarily air benders. And while all air nomads living in the temples could air bend, this was because of their highly spiritual lifestyle, those who don't live that same lifestyle would have no such guarantee
This is a very interesting theory. I'd like to believe that the surviving air nomads went into hiding in the earth kingdom and try to blend in with the citizens there even starting families. They probably grew hair, cover their tattoos and abandon their spiritual airbending techniques. But they probably would've been dead by the time Aang wakes up especially if they didn't start any families thus making Aang the last airbender but probably not the last air nomad...
I'd say that he is both the last airbender and air nomad since to be a nomad you would have to practice their traditions and clearly you cant do that in hiding, so they could have had ancestral connections to air nomads but they themselves weren't nomads
Remember that scene in Sherlock Holmes when he says to Watson "It is a huge mistake to theorize before one has data. Inevitably one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts."
New generations of air nomads actually, with no physical connection to the previous ones, but the important connection for them is the spiritual one so a moot point imo.
But wouldn't that mean that non benders would get fire/water/earth bending awakened too? The show only mentioned air comig back with harmonic convergence. It'd make more sense of the sand benders were decendants of hiding air benders. We're not sure if sand bending is new or old when aang meets them, but it looks like a style combination of earth and air, just as lava I'd a combination of earth and fire.
Well technically Appa is an airbender too, and then there's Tenzin, Jinora, Meelo, and Ikki, then all of the other airbenders when the universe decided to rebalance itself
@Menkir Dennis Momo has flied on multiple occasions, he just jumps up and flys, it isn't just gliding. But even if he isn't Appa is still definitely an airbender
I may be wrong in this, but I thought it was stated that everyone born from an air nomad was an airbender. I know they state that the Earth kingdom is the largest kingdom and that not everyone is an earth bender in the kingdom.
Okay but I read a book that was canon where it said air benders were the only benders that always had children with bending powers. Of course this was before lok so maybe they had never cross married before, causing bumi.
this could be from suriviors of the airtemples but it also could go way further in the past avatar kyoshis mother was an airbender as well, she used the fans to enhance her bending after leaving the air nomads, thats why kyoshi also used them so even long before aangs escape there could have happend something
It could be that the harmonic convergence was similar to being exposed to a terrigen Crystal from marvel the DNA of the paticular people already included dormant powers.
Theory: In order to confirm you didn't kill the Avatar, you would have had to keep all the kids of the right age alive and torture them. Ty Lee, the descendant of nobility I contend is not only the offspring of a hidden away youth from a rich noble, I propose that hiding of air bending skills resulted in a new bending form that simply wasn't recognized as air bending. (Or, IS airbending, but anyone who would have recognized it died, so no one would be able to confirm if chi blocking is a known Air Nomad skill)
Unfortunately not, chi blocking can be done by anyone, nit just benders with the right technique, as shown in korra. The cool thing ABOUT Ty Lee is that she is self made, with no inherent ability.
yes you are right, their were survivors, BUT, all were killed in between the 100 year wars. The remaining nomads used Bisons to hide in the sky, but at that time there were still a few dragons left, the fire nation use the dragons to fly and decimate all the rest of the survivors... but one. Aang, They all looked in the complete opposite direction, apart from Zuko.
Of course he isn’t, the other air tribes weren’t attacked by the fire nation, and if he is the last one, once he dies the next avatar will never learn airbending and the cycle will break, this isn’t quantum physics
The fire nation did kill all the airbenders, but Aang and Appa survived, Appa is also an airbender, then he had kids with Katara and Tenzin was an airbender then he had 3 airbender kids then the universe rebalanced itself
@Menkir Dennis ok well it does have to do with spirit energy. Basically huge amounts of spirit energy were released after harmonic convergence which were the same kind the lion turtles used to give bending which gave random people different bending abilities except for energy bending.
Ugh if the grandchildren of the dead airbenders were not able to bend the air doesn't that make them... MORTALS??? Answer: YES! So basically Aang was the last airbender cause nobody else was able to bend air at that time.
This is true. During the show he was the only air bender.... but airbending is all about being spiritually connected.... and that connection was lost to everyone, at the time, so during Aang's life he was the last airbender
So Opal’s ancestors could be air nomads as he said. But her mother Suyin is an earthbender and her grandmother Toph is an earthbender too. Toph’s parents and grandparents are from earth kingdom so they couldn’t be air nomads either. So that leaves us w Suyin’s father (Unknown) or Bataar(Opal’s father) could be a descendant of air nomads.
True who’s to say he didn’t find any more Airbenders a lot of stuff happened off screen between the last Airbender and legend of Korra he may have decided not to reveal it
your theory about the Nomads having descendants "reawakening" their airbending during harmonic convergence falls flat when you realize Bumi is Aang's oldest son (i.e. a direct descendant), and was born without any bending powers, Kaya was born a water bender and Tenzin, who is the youngest of Aang and Katara's children has the air bending powers at birth. it has also been stated numerous times throughout both shows that non-benders can be born from families who are benders and vice-versa.
Not every person from a nation is a bender, that's stablished literally in the first minutes of the series with Soka complaining about Katara being a water bender while she couldn't even control it. If you can't bend you're not a bender, regardless of which nation you're from. So Aang being the only person in the world able to air bend makes him The Last Airbender. Screen Rant being silly as always
@@dragon22214 When Aang showed up as the Avatar most of the world was already in control of the fire nation and by the time the comet came back all of the world had been conquered already, Ozai wanted to use it to completely destroy the Earth Kingom. Air nomads were eradicated, after Sozin's massacre nobody would dare call themselves an air nomad for 100 years, it's very likely their children wouldn't be taught to airbend and through generations became a lost art even to their descendants as any bender children would've been taught not to use it under any circumstance given that it would mean their deaths. Remember that the whole fire nation searched for the Avatar for 100 years.
@@Ebani Precisely. And if spiritual training was a prerequisite to Airbending, actively living a non-spiritual lifestyle in a world disconnected from the spirit world, would mean you’d never manifest it if you weren’t a monk.
Did harmonic convergence give other people other elemnts' bending abilities? If so, did it give all four elements? And did it give each element to a roughly equal additional number of people? Also, can anyone provide me with an example of a named person with newly acquired bending abilities of an element other than air?
I’m surprised that you didn’t mention Tylee, her features along with the way she fights is very like air nomads, I personally think that she very well could be the child of an air nomad that escaped and fled to the fire nation because that would be the least likely place to find air nomads.
That beginning clip was an amazing moment in the series Also, he was still the last airbender since they repressed bending through 100 years and lost their bending needing the harmonic convergence to reconnect
I kinda have a theory of ty lee being a airbender because how she basically looks like aang with hair and her ability to basically jump 20 feet into the air and can run really fast is an ability I think an airbender can do. And she uses her airbending ability by doing gymnastics to fight and for her advantage to make it unoticable for others to think she is airbending, but natural talent from a non bender.
The only thing i can think is Opal. She's the only new airbender we know the parents of. One being Su Yin (an earthbender) the other Kanto (a non-bender). that would mean one Kantos bloodline has to have air nomad in it
Haven't watched the video yet, but I guess it is referring to Appa EDIT AFTER I WATCHED: no, if you mean the survivors that hid their culture, they would cease to be benders very quickly, due to far less spirituality, and the fact that they would only have a half, quarter, eighth and then sixteenth air nomad blood, after some generations. However, they would not even be air nomads. They would definitely not continue to practise the traditions of only one of their (great)grandparents, but I also think they might not have known the fact at all, maybe even starting from the children of the survivors, and without having to go down more generations for the knowledge to be lost.
Even by your own theory, it's based on people who can't bend but got their bending capibilities reawakened. If they can't bend, they aren't benders. This was stated in Korra first arc of benders vs non-benders. That one son of Aang was not a bender until he was able to bend, at which point he became a bender. Katara wasn't a blood bender until she bended blood. It doesn't matter if they theoretically "could bend" it's a matter of if they "HAVE" bended, even a little bit. Aang wasn't a water bender UNTIL he learned how to water bend. Korra wasn't an airbender until she learned how to airbend. You are not born a bender by being born, you become a bender by bending. It's no different than a martial artist except benders need to first be bending capable which is not the same as being able to bend at will (which is required to be classified as a "bender"). So even by your own logic, it still doesn't prove *or even suggest* anything about there being other air BENDERS during the last airbender. A descendant who can't currently bend does not count as a bender. The theory brings up some fun points. But ultimately does not grant any merit to the conclusion with the conclusion still being baseless and unsupported by the theory provided. Yes, they might have survived the attack, but died of old age, as again, 100 years have passed since then. Bending abilities being awakened after the A.T.L.A.B. does not give merit to anyone being able to airbend during the time of The Last Airbender. Again, if they can't airbend on command, then they are not an airbender.
In season 2 when Appa was lost, team Avatar went to Ba Sing Se with other refugees. And the Airbenders who survived the initial attack could have also sought refuge in Ba Sing Se. It did take the Fire Nation 100 years to conquer the city
i definately feel like there’s a bit of a hole in this theory, while there may have still been decendants of the air nomads, their power to airbend most likely faded away as the generations went on making aang the last airbender alive in his generation
Toph didn't get the ability to earth-bend from the badgermoles, she learned the techniques from the badgermoles.

Korra wasn't always an air bender. Aang wasn't a water bender until he learned how to water bend
@@Hadeks_Marow Yep.
Actually,
bending =/= culture
Is a key topic addressed in Legend of Korra.
I never thought he was the last because they're nomads so they traveled and wouldn't at least one be in ba sing se.
And the fire nation
@@jeontaekook3195 its possible, but not likely... the northern water tribe and the earth kingdom are the safest
@@tubbyyt367 No I think the context is that they traveled in general even before the war. Aang was travelling the world and mixing with all the nations even before he knew he was the Avatar. Travelling around on Sky Bison is why they are “Nomads”.
So, obviously Nomads traveled to the Fire Nation. If they decided to have children with individuals there, then boom, you have Air Nomad descendants in the Fire Nation.
@@ADTillion you're right. But at the same time, once the fire nation attacked they most likely would have fled the fire nation for safety... having a giant air bison would have surely gotten them eradicated quickly....
Even if this is true
He’s still not the last airbender!
Appa is an airbender 😂
This is true. The distinction is airbender vs air nomad.
You could easily define humans as the only benders as the societal role.

There was no connection restored there.
spiritual connection, not just genetic connection
Because harmonic convergence was just an idiotic plot device that was completely detached from the original world.
@@shellersle128 Also facts
There is a prevailing theory that Ty Lee is a descendant of air nomads as her skin and eye color fit plus the chi blocking is similar to the teaching Aang was given at the air temple
give Ryan a raise he is the only good part of this channel

I think that fire, earth, and waters was given to non benders it’s just that airbending was a huge deal.
@Menkir Dennis maybe it’s because those elements don’t matter since so many people exist who can bend those elements.
The way he started yelling in the end was funny 😂

In the comics it's revealed that Uncle Iroh invented boba
This is something we learn new things everyday
Theory:
In order to confirm you didn't kill the Avatar, you would have had to keep all the kids of the right age alive and torture them.
The remaining nomads used Bisons to hide in the sky, but at that time there were still a few dragons left, the fire nation use the dragons to fly and decimate all the rest of the survivors... but one. Aang, They all looked in the complete opposite direction, apart from Zuko.

the other air tribes were attacked tho
The fire nation did kill all the airbenders, but Aang and Appa survived, Appa is also an airbender, then he had kids with Katara and Tenzin was an airbender then he had 3 airbender kids then the universe rebalanced itself
The other air temples were attacked, remember when the gaang went to the western Air temple and there were scorch marks in some areas
I'm glad The Completionist finally made a colab with ScreenRant
The comics do a way better job at bringing back the aibenders then Korra
i didn’t read the comics how do they bring the air benders back
I have a theory as to why many people got airbending after harmonic convergence.
@Menkir Dennis ok well it does have to do with spirit energy. Basically huge amounts of spirit energy were released after harmonic convergence which were the same kind the lion turtles used to give bending which gave random people different bending abilities except for energy bending.
Narrarator just got louder and louder as he fell deeper into the rabbit hole
Ugh if the grandchildren of the dead airbenders were not able to bend the air doesn't that make them... MORTALS???
Answer: YES!
So basically Aang was the last airbender cause nobody else was able to bend air at that time.
This is true. During the show he was the only air bender.... but airbending is all about being spiritually connected.... and that connection was lost to everyone, at the time, so during Aang's life he was the last airbender
Another great one from Screen Cancer
..and to find the rest of the airbenders,he moved to Pandora and turend Blue . The End

Please explain
@@BallMuncher555 James Camerons Avatar is set on Pandora, well, and they are blue lol
He was the last one, that we at least get to see
Before the comics and TLOK, at least
Technically, the descendants would be air nomads if they couldn’t bend air. :)
Plot twist: it’s the foaming mouth guy from Kyoshi island
Not every person from a nation is a bender, that's stablished literally in the first minutes of the series with Soka complaining about Katara being a water bender while she couldn't even control it. If you can't bend you're not a bender, regardless of which nation you're from.
So Aang being the only person in the world able to air bend makes him The Last Airbender. Screen Rant being silly as always
Not everyone is a bender, thats litteraly the whole first Arc of Legend of Korra..🙄
@@patricecote7505 but every air nomad where benders that been stated

I’m surprised that you didn’t mention Tylee, her features along with the way she fights is very like air nomads, I personally think that she very well could be the child of an air nomad that escaped and fled to the fire nation because that would be the least likely place to find air nomads.
this is a very good video
i really liked this theory
That beginning clip was an amazing moment in the series
Also, he was still the last airbender since they repressed bending through 100 years and lost their bending needing the harmonic convergence to reconnect
I think this makes perfect sense MY MIND IS BLOWN, and you came up with a better explanation that the writers intended lol
this was a very good analysis
Just imagine when the spirt portal opens when Aang was a kid and soka gets air bending
Toph had Earth Bending powers, she just learned how to use them from the badger moles
That would actually explain Zaheer’s weird obsession with airbenders
@Menkir Dennis tru but it was still airbender philosophy
@Menkir Dennis meh, atla is better anyways
What the title should've been: "Aang could've been one of a couple of survivors, but there's no way of knowing."
Video: * finishes making excellent point *
Me: * Yeets chair * MY WHOLE LIFE IS A LIEEEEEEEE~
The only thing i can think is Opal. She's the only new airbender we know the parents of. One being Su Yin (an earthbender) the other Kanto (a non-bender). that would mean one Kantos bloodline has to have air nomad in it
This theory is so untrue and just funny because in the comics they are saying that the air nomads that escaped was destroyed and killed just later
Haven't watched the video yet, but I guess it is referring to Appa
EDIT AFTER I WATCHED: no, if you mean the survivors that hid their culture, they would cease to be benders very quickly, due to far less spirituality, and the fact that they would only have a half, quarter, eighth and then sixteenth air nomad blood, after some generations.
However, they would not even be air nomads. They would definitely not continue to practise the traditions of only one of their (great)grandparents, but I also think they might not have known the fact at all, maybe even starting from the children of the survivors, and without having to go down more generations for the knowledge to be lost.
There’s a theory that Tai Lee is from an airbender family and this actually helps solidify that theory as well
Even by your own theory, it's based on people who can't bend but got their bending capibilities reawakened.
Awesome video
I always thought Ty Lee might be descended from an airbender. She is lighthearted like Aang and flips around like an airbender
She is a nomad (circus) but she is self made and self taught. It would really detract from her character if she was.
In season 2 when Appa was lost, team Avatar went to Ba Sing Se with other refugees. And the Airbenders who survived the initial attack could have also sought refuge in Ba Sing Se. It did take the Fire Nation 100 years to conquer the city
There are no airbenders in ba sing se.
i definately feel like there’s a bit of a hole in this theory, while there may have still been decendants of the air nomads, their power to airbend most likely faded away as the generations went on making aang the last airbender alive in his generation
