I know I said that the Life of Katara was coming next, but as I said on twitter, I'm waiting to do my video on her because new content on her character is being released very soon, so I wanted to get her whole story in the video. Hope you guys understand! Instead, this is a video I've been wanting to do for a while because this story is just so amazing, and I really enjoyed breaking it down. Enjoy the video!

My personal head cannon is that a few air nomads did survive, married into the earth kingdom or fire nation in disguise, and that their descendants *SPOILERS* are the ones who gain airbending after harmonic convergence in Korra season 3. There’s also a strong case for ty lee being a air nomad descendant, with her acrobatic skill and similar eye color to aang.
    Just my personal opinion

I remember when I read this comic for the first time. I actually cried because of how horrible Aang felt after he found out how the surviving air nomads ended up dying in the hand of the Fire Nation. I’m honestly glad that this wasn’t animated because the topic was a bit too much for children. I personally think that the air benders with tattoos are the ones who definitely died because they couldn’t hide their true selves. The ones without the tattoos most likely survived and married with people in the Earth Kingdom or maybe even in the water tribe or Fire Nation. Remember when Bumi got his air bending powers after the Harmonic Convergence? He was the only known character with Air Nomad ancestry because he was Avatar Aang’s son. But I also think that the other air nomads were the descendants of air nomads as well. Some of them really had the spirit of an air bender. Especially people like Kai. I also believe that Ty Lee might have an air bender ancestor because her athletic abilities are close to the air bending style.

I have a theory that the Sandbenders are also descendants of Airbenders. First of all, they were also described as being nomads. Secondly the environment they live in almost necessitates they be covered from head to toe, which would also be the perfect disguise for Airbenders with tattoos. Thirdly, they travel using boat like land sleds propelled by sail, using a style of earthbending similar to airbending, which creates "whirlwinds" of sand. Lastly, I couldn't think of a better place in the whole world where Airbenders could totally hide, out in the open, where they could be safe from the Fire Nation. They could easily assimilate into the Sandbender tribes, the clothing would hide their tattoos, and with sand being so light and susceptible to being carried by wind, Airbenders could even openly use their Airbending powers by disguising it as sandbending. The desert is also devoid of many resources the Fire Nation would have use for, so those nomadic Sandbender tribes would most likely go unthreatened. If Iroh could learn how to apply a waterbending technique for firebending purposes, then it's not a stretch to believe that the Sandbenders learned some airbending techniques for Earthbending purposes. I don't see a reason why other than having an airbending influence, they'd prefer a boat like vehicle propelled by a sail over just bending the sand like waves and "surfing" the dunes.

Aang's lonliness being the last of his people is a subject they really couldnt touch on enough in the series, which i really wish they did. They kinda glossed over it really quickly, when in reality Aang's trauma is deeper than Katara's, Zuko's, and Sokka's combined.

I've been wondering something since i read the Kyoshi novel and found out about this comic, a sort of theory about the Air Nomads that appear throughout the Earth Kingdom after harmonic convergence.
We've been told that due to their high spirituality, all air nomads were born benders, however, on the Kyoshi novel we learn that if a nomas strays from this spirituality path, their air bending suffers severely, diminishing their power.
So, we know that on the attack to the temples with the intention to wipe out all airbenders, some were able to escape and hide until eventually the Fire Nation baited them and killed them. But what if some of the nomads that escaped, brought with them babies that... Being babies, weren't indoctrinated in the ways of the nomads, they hid them in the earth kingdom without knowledge of their heritage, and as they were never directed in this "Spiritual Path", despite being supposed to be airbenders, they never developed their bending, they just lived as normal earth kingdom non-benders and had descendants that, eventually, after harmonic convergence where the world itself sought to find balance, these descendants got their air bending potential woken up?

This definitely should've been an episode. It truly would've been quite the defining moment in the series. However, I'd imagine that for the time (early 2000s), Nick probably would've considered this plot too dark. All though, I'd say finding Monk Gyatso's bones is pretty dark, but bones most likely pass some sort of quota.
Personally, one of the reasons I wanted a Book 4 was to see Aang deal with the struggles of losing his people, to see him actually grieve. All though it is touched on in season 1, it's pretty evident that he's forced to shelf his feelings, in a sense, for the greater good, which is to train/master the elements so he can defeat Firelord Ozai. Would've been neat to see him returning to the temples and conducting some sort of airbender ceremony in honor of those that were killed. Just being able to look inward, if only for a moment, free of Avatar duties and just be. As an adult, I could certainly see him doing something annually with his family to honor the airbenders; however, when Tenzin's born, the ceremonies become less somber as the years go by.
Also, keeping the whole "kids show should teach solid life lessons" aspect in mind, it could've been a great opportunity to highlight grief and its many facets.

Just real quick, though, as of Book 1, Katara didn't know that the reason her mother was killed was because she lied to that firebender to protect Katara. She thought her death was the result of a firebender being typically evil, and didn't know her mother sacrificed herself. So, making her sacrifice count wouldn't have been a motivator for Katara to become the best waterbender she can be.

Airbending also has a tie with the spiritual side which is why in the 3rd season of LOK some earth nation people were able to awaken their air bending from the harmonic convergence.

I find it interesting Aang tried to destroy the connection to his past lives in the comics and gained a newfound appreciation for them(though never faces blame for a blatant decision of his own fruition). Yet, when Korra has the disconnect inflicted upon her without trying to do so herself. Her story faces flack over it(Even though she grows an appreciation for why there's deeper meaning for the Avatar.) Which begins her _Legend_ to become more understanding, compassionate and enlightened while simultaneously dealing with the trauma.

Great video as always and yeah I think it would have been a great video but they probably didn't do it since The Blue Spirit episode was somewhat similar, Aang going out on his own and getting captured by Zhao, and since they didn't know how well the show would do back then it probably would have been best not to use the same plots in multiple episodes

  • @javiercox2928

Taking this story and running with it.
Do a limited series focusing on the Airbenders who either escaped the temples or were out traveling at the beginning of the war. Series opens with Aang disappearing and Fire Nation attacking the temples. We get Gyatso having a heroic death and probably defending escaping children and bison.
We see the Fire Nation in full genocidal mode enacting destruction and capturing Airbenders, using those stolen relics. Some who have morals help a few children escape and hide them in their own families (for the Ty Lee theorists)
Most that escape the purge end up hiding among the Earth Kingdom, vowing never to use their Airbending, and starting families (in a way explaining Harmonic Convergence on who received Airbending)
But would probably end up hella dark

A big thing to consider on why the majority of Airbenders would’ve been killed is that since they are such a spiritual people they all would’ve migrated back to their temples to celebrate and observe the 100 year comet. Then the fire nation could easily pick off whatever stragglers that remained

I still find it upsetting that the writers killed off all of the airbenders (sans Aang). I think it would have been really neat (especially come Korra’s time) to have seen more airbenders.
Not only is it highly unlikely that the fire nation would have successfully wiped out enough airbenders/members of the air nation at their temples *before* they had a chance to warn one another of the attacks, but the air nation are a people of NOMADS. Meaning, there were likely dozens (if not hundreds) of air benders roaming the earth just doing their thing. I find it extremely hard to believe that all of them were lured in by the traps the fire nation set for them.
Instead, I would have liked to have seen these nomadic air benders who escaped the genocide of their people assimilate into the earth nation, and maybe even the fire nation colonies over time. They don’t bend. They don’t tell their families or their children. Maybe they let the art of air bending die out as to preserve not only themselves, but what would have been a dying culture.
We see many similarities with certain characters and the air nation. Ty Lee, for example, moves much like an air bender and sports the hazel/grey eyes and lighter hair. Very uncharacteristic of the fire nation. Do you know how fun it would have been for her to have found out she descended from a people her nation had tried to wipe out? Descended from a people that she and her friends were hunting?
Then we see Azula’s and Mei’s reactions to learning of their best friends ability/heritage. Would Azula be conflicted trying to take down Ty Lee? Would she hesitate? Would Mei jump in to save Ty Lee from Azula, much the same way we see her do this at the Boiling Rock?
Aang could have tracked these people down and re-taught an entire people air bending. He would have been the last airbender, but not in the way the writers wanted us to believe. He would have been the last air bender who knew how to bend.

I suppose it may have gotten cut for being a repeat of the Blue Spirt, but maybe in another timeline they could have looked into mixing the two stories... like the Yu Yan archers were sick but they also never really show up again, so they could have had Zhao capture aang with the relics instead (they are in the mountains in The Blue Spirit after all) and the rest of the episode could proceed the same.
Hell, the merchant in the comic even says that “someone traded this for some medicine” they could have even kept that by having Zhao “trade” it for some medicine from the herbalist aang met, though perhaps that would bring up the question of why Zhao thought setting up a trap in such a remote location was a good idea...

Also, this episode could easily take the place of the great divide, an episode which did zero to contribute the overarching storyline of the series.

I am amazed how Aang stayed goofy and happy despite the guilt he carries and the responsibility of being the Avatar along with keeping his culture alive.
