    Great video- I brought headless cross and TYR on vinyl off a market stall quite cheap - when I got them home they were a bit warped so I put them in my vinyl shelves to flatten - fast forward 9(!)years and I dug them out following Phil Aston’s review - they are now perfectly flat and I was surprised how good they are as albums - I’d urge all sabbath fans who might have ignored these albums to give them a go - and your music room looking very good now ❤

It is great to see that the material from their "unpopular" era(s) is being appreciated and recognized. I also was curious about the title( no mention of Tony Martin's name) . I just listened to the new mix of forbidden and it sounds like the guitar parts were re-recorded by Tony iommi. If he didn’t do that, then he had to have used different takes of his guitar and the drums to put together a new mix. If that’s the case, it’s a different recording of the album. I could be wrong, but I think it’s a much needed improvement in the production and it feels like a new album.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      He did not re-record any parts. However he said there are some instances in which he used different guitar takes. But yes the remix is wildly different sounding from the original and it’s all the better for it.

    Back in the day, I was amazed at the Tony Martin era Sabbath. I know my peers did not like it because of Ozzy and Dio. I was more opened minded. Martin was a great singer and the band was moving forward. "Forbidden" is under rated. I still listen to all five Martin era discs. Black Sabbath is one of those rare bands that has never put out a really terrible album.

  • @turntabillist

    Great job breaking down the late 80s-90s band history which is such a confusing and convoluted period! Quite frankly, I've always thought of it as a something other than "Black Sabbath" because it was! A bunch of Iommi solo albums with a somewhat steady vocalist. At any rate I'm happy to finally discover this period thanks to the box and there is indeed some very good quality music here. I am disappointed though, that there are no lyrics in the CD set.

    Great video. Sadly Headless Cross is faulty on Apple Music, there had been some inquiries already. They might look into that, Type O Negative ran into similar problems. 7 out of 9 songs just cut off after 2-3 minutes. The title track is already removed, I guess next week it'll be properly fixed. The boxset is sold out everywhere online and especially local stores but Tony Martin already confirmed that it's not a limited edition and they never anticipated the demands. I always wanted these albums but even 9 years ago Headless Cross was at least $24. Also in Europe the box set is almost twice the price than in North America... But that's often been the case. I'm just glad these three wonderful albums (and Forbidden, which is okay to below average - sounds great, but at least half of the songs don't move me) are available.

    I generally agree that there should be a box that covers all the releases after Heaven and Hell, but the Dehumanizer CD is in the "Rules of Hell " box set so we are covered there. Cross Purposes Live is not included , at least from what i gather, because Sharon has the rights to the Ozzy era songs preformed on that record, and Born Again is going to be remastered separately. Hopefully this one gets the multi-CD treatment that some of the other records got. I'm overall disappointed that there is no treasure trove of unreleased material, but i will be getting this for the remasters. Especially Forbidden. Sheesh! 😂 great video!

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sharon doesn’t own the rights to the Ozzy era songs…the writers own the rights. That said, Sharron isn’t preventing the live album from being included. The reason I know this is she didn’t stop the Black Sabbath Live Evil boxset with Ronnie James Dio singing the Ozzy era songs. She also didn’t stop the live albums released under the name Heaven And Hell that featuring the Dio era Black Sabbath line-up performing old Black Sabbath songs. Ozzy owns 50% of the name Black Sabbath and an agreement was made that only new material with Ozzy would be released under the name Black Sabbath. But all pre-recorded material is allowed to be released according to Tony Iommi.

    • @Stemcellactivationpatches2023
      @Stemcellactivationpatches2023 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The argument I heard why the Osbournes have 50% control is dumb. Ok. Yes, it’s true Black Sabbath band didn’t do as well in the later 80s and into the 90s. The argument for Ozzy was that the band did big numbers when he was in the band. True. But, originally in the mid to late 70s Sabbath were in the decline. Then RJD comes in and the band does big numbers again. So, by Ozzys own argument Dio should own a piece of the name too. Of course this is silly because BOTH singers left the band. I don’t know why the circumstances were during the settlement between Tony and Ozzy.

    • @richardhincemon
      @richardhincemon 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Stemcellactivationpatches2023 Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osborne are co-owners 50/50 split settled out of court in 2010 after Ronnie James Dio RIP passed away. The agreement is that no " new " material can be released unless 3 original members of Black Sabbath are participating in the project which was done for the recording of the 13 album when Tony and Ozzy hired original member Geezer Butler to play on the album and tour.

  • @chef8569

    Solid box set on vinyl and CD; only negatives are that the book is soft and not hard bound an no Japanese tracks for vinyl customers, lastly no reproduced liner notes / inner sleeves for CD customers. Still I like many didn't have the Martin albums because they were extremely hard to find even the smaller marketed labels that got the rights to the albums.
    All in all though 5/5 for me the negatives are nothing to me , I am vinyl guy and getting these on Vinyl is great. Vinyl sounds awesome , liner notes are reproduced so that you can properly read them and lastly you do get the poly sleeves and not just paper sleeves to protect the vinyl as well. Forbidden finally sounds properly finished, TYR probably didn't need a remastering but it always sounded as it should and Cross Purposes is solid sounding as well and one of my favorite Martin era albums.
    Martin Box Album Rankings for ME -
    1- Headless Cross
    2- Cross Purposes
    3- TYR
    4- Forbidden
    Forbidden is still the weakest album of the four here however guitars & drums have returned w/ Iommi taking the helm at the mixing table. At last it sounds like a Sabbath album very similar to 13 in guitar tone.
    As far as Idol not being included I am fine with that it has already had a repressing's & cd re-releases previously in select markets. These above are the true Martin era albums and I picked them up and you should to. They definitely will grow on you quickly when you sit down and listen to them.

    Of all Super-deluxe edition of Black Sabbath-albums I think Volume 4 and Technical Ecstacy was the best because of all outtakes and live-material, hardback book and everything. Then Sabotage got a great concert, and Live Evil was a missed opportunity (they could have done something like "No sleep 'til Hammersmith" or "Strangers in the night" instead with many concerts collected).

      No Ozzy and Sharon do not have the rights to the name, Tony owns 50% and Ozzy owns 50%. Part of the agreement when Ozzy returned to the band as well as getting 50% of the name was that only new music would be released with Ozzy. This was an effort to restore the name and led the band credibility. That agreement though doesn’t prevent older material from coming out. Demos are not new material though Ozzy may have rejected it because he owns half of the band name.

    I have to correct you on something here. The Tony Martin era was never supposed to be reissued back then, Tony Iommi never promised it. I got to interview Tony Martin, he told me that Sharon Osborne never saw him as an official member of Black Sabbath, she was the reason why his era never got reissued, at least until now. There is proof in that statement, especially as Ray Gillen's recording's of the Eternal Idol got a reissue, Tony Martin's didn't. If that isn't politics then I don't know what is.

      @BrendonSnyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That’s incorrect and your own comment shows just how incorrect you are 😂😂😂 Yes the Tony Martin album The Eternal Idol has been reissued twice before and with Tony Martin singing. On the 2nd reissue that was a 2 CD set, the 2nd disc features the unreleased recordings with Ray Gillen. They did not omit Tony Martin in the release. Get your facts straight before trying to correct someone.

    It's probably not called the Tony Martin years because Eternal Idol is not on it, and Eternal Idol is not on it because it was done under the original record label and it's had several reissues already, not least of which is the deluxe edition that actually has the Ray Gillen sessions on disc 2.
    I think Dehumanizer was also done under that original record label so it's the same situation as Eternal Idol, which is why that's also not included. The whole point of the box is pretty much just finally getting those four albums back in print after being OOP since the 1990s.

      No it’s not about “unreleased” music, it’s about no “new” music. Ok, here's my opinion on why there isn't any demos, live material, etc. Simply because the Martin era was the least accepted. Perhaps the BMG/Rhino weren't willing to go all out. Think of the set as a way to test the waters. If it does well enough, they may be willing to re-release with more extras. Considering I have heard they may release Cross Purposes Live if this does well, that may be the case. Right now, they just wanted to get the albums back out.
    My initial impression of the Forbidden remix is that the drums, bass, and guitars sound better. I think they went too far, though. Stripping out the keyboards, using alternate takes, etc was completely unnecessary.
