  • Black Sabbath is credited with being the 1st Heavy Metal band and guitarist Tony Iommi is largely considered the creator of the Heavy Metal riff. In all, the band has released 19 studio albums featuring 5 different singers throughout. Join me in counting down the complete works of this legendary band.

Getting to this a year later... I love this video, Brendon! I think I have a largely different ranking, but I also acknowledge I am unfamiliar with some records, and under-familiar with more than that. I do love how high you put Technical Ecstasy -- that was the record that came out when I, as youth, was first paying attention to what was then-forthcoming from the band. And I didn't hear Never Say Die until a couple/few decades later, LOL. One of the various rankings Martin Popoff did, on a video panel, had these two ranked #2 and #1 (!) -- love the contrarian take. My own #1 is probably Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. But still/always in flux on what I'm most paying attention to with the band! So whatever with "agreeing' with a ranking -- I don't care about that. I love how you articulate what it is that strikes you in each record, and as what's-best-in the variability of the music.

Wow, the debut that far down? Hey, I give you BIG TIME credit for having the seeds to put that out there(I totally disagree; but this is about opinions).
    My ranking:
20: Seventh Star. To me it sounds notably like an Iommi solo record more so than being within Sabbath's wheelhouse.
19: Headless across. There are some good songs here, but I LOATHE that 80's synth sound.
    18. Forbidden. I really don't get the dislike for this.
    17. Cross Purposes, another underrated Martin album, imo.
    16. TYR, I love Annu Mundi
15: The Devil You Know. This has progressively grown on me.
14: The Eternal Idol. Convinced of this wasn't their 5th singer, it would have done much better. (Generally, I feel if they called the band Iommi during the Martin era, people would have given all of those a better chance.)
13: I seem to like it better then most do
12: Heaven and Hell. The title track is my favorite non Ozzy tune
11: Never Say Die. Yes, it's got some off the wall sounds, and I think they're awesome.
    10. Mob Rules
9: Born Again. I love Ian and Tony together.
8: Technical Ecstacy. You won't Change me is an absolute favorite.
    7: Dehumanizer. My favorite DioSab
    6. Sabotage

    2. Paranoid

Wow! A very unusual ranking. I appreciate it, despite the debut ranking so low! 😉 It is the founding stone for heavy rock/metal. The title track alone is unique and a masterpiece. Interesting you ranked the following Paranoid as your no.1. TMO there is not such a big difference between the two. The sound becomes different on the third album (for some the first doom or stoner metal album).
My top 5 BS (in no specific order): Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Heaven and Hell, Paranoid, Mob Rules and the debut.

I agree the debut is the foundation of a lot of Heavy Metal albums to follow it and the title track is outstanding. But that doesn’t mean the album is as good as the others. Interesting ranking and one that will puzzle many e.g. ranking Never Say Die higher than Vol.4 or Master Of Reality. Still refreshing to see a different perspective from the general consensus. For me, rather boringly, i give Vol.4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage as the band's peak creative and most progressive period. Agree that the Tony Martin catalogue doesn't receive much recognition but maybe this is due to the rather formulaic material which, although heavy, lacks the adventurousness of the aforementioned 3 albums.

My favourite is Paranoid, and that will always be so. Master of Reality would probably come second. I liked the debut, but except for a few tracks, I didn't like it that much. Sabbath IV again had a lot of good tracks, but a few I didn't like. I pretty much signed off at this point. I had a friend who was a huge fan, and he bought everything, which I did hear, but I think I only really liked Sabbath Bloody Sabbath out of all of those. I didn't get back into them until Born Again, and the Ronnie James Dio years, with Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell, and I saw the Mob Rules tour, which was fantastic. Then I signed off again, and only bought the album "13" which I thought was quite good. Like many other bands of that time, I need to go back again and look at some of the albums I pushed aside at the time, and have a listen with new/old ears. They are from my original hometown of Birmingham, England, so they always have a spot in my heart because of that.

I’ve always liked the band because of the varied line ups and changing with the times. It makes listening to their whole catalogue very interesting. For me Sabbath is Tony Iommi and his riffs. So the singer can change but as long as Iommi is there then it’s Black Sabbath.

Interesting list, no favouritism towards the classic line up or certain vocalists. I may be in the minority but i always felt that once Ozzy & Bill had gone they should have renamed the band, make a clean break so comparisons need be drawn. Ronnie was the best vocalist as he was in Rainbow but having different vocalists gave the band new life & a new audience. Ozzy was not the best singer but the most iconic, the one everyone associates with the Black Sabbath name. Personally i have always loved Master of Reality, followed by Vol 4, Sabotage, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Mob Rules & Heaven & Hell. The original lineup had a stronger set of albums than any subsequent grouping bar the mediocre final two albums. Nice list, enjoyed the Kiss list also.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree that at a certain point perhaps after Dio left they should have retired the name. But I also feel Black Sabbath is like Van Halen in that the real “sound” of the band is the guitar playing from Iommi. You can replace a vocalist but you could never replace the guitars in Sabbath. Just my opinion.

If i had to choose betwween any of the vocalists that Sabbath had I'd put Ozzy at the bottm as I prefer the voices of all the others - but having said said , because of the music on them (mainly due to the keyboards) today my favourite Sabbath albums are Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die followed by Mob Rules then Sabotage, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Heaven and Hell, Born Again, The Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, Master of Reality, Seventh Star, Dehumanizer, Tyr, Cross Purposes, Paranoid, Black Sabbath, IV.

@15:00 - I would take anything Rick Wakeman says with a grain of salt, because he loves telling a good story. But the way he tells it, he recorded his bits for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath while recording Yes’ Tales from Topographic Oceans. One thing about Wakeman that is true, as opposed to the rest of Yes, he is exceptionally fast in the studio with very little need for retakes. This left him with a lot of free time, and just down the hall - wouldn’t you know it - are the Black Sabbath guys. It probably took him all of 15 minutes while his Yes bandmates were taking a bong break to record all his bits for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. So yeah, Geezer bought him a few beers for his trouble - makes sense to me! 😂

You're not alone on the debut, I've always found it severely over-rated. Love the title track and N.I.B. (and Wicked World on the US version) but the rest of it is a boring plod for me. My Top 5: Master of Reality, The Mob Rules, Paranoid, Born Again, Heaven & Hell

Ranking the self-titled in 17th sure went over well for you, eh? Even if your reasoning is completely valid, your opinion still sucks 😂 good ranking, I'm planning to do one myself someday. So far I'm 6 albums in, and Sabotage is my favorite, yes it's a bit of a departure from the classic doomy Sabbath but it hits so hard and in my opinion has Ozzy's greatest vocal performances ever. My least favorite is SBS, please don't kill me, I doubt it will remain my least favorite, but it's just a little too prog rocky for me, plus Who Are You? sucks big time. Can't say I'm really looking forward to the last 2 Ozzy albums, hehe, but I'm definitely excited for the Dio stuff.

@@BrendonSnyder i was just joking haha, but I agree completely, people complaining only help out in the end. Personally, it's completely understandable why you wouldn't like the debut as much as others, it starts off with a super heavy doomy track only to switch over to blues rock. I personally love it just for how groovy it is, but it's true it's not quite the Sabbath we truly know and love today, even if it's still great, in my opinion, in it's own special kind of way.

@@BrendonSnyder It was around '85-87 when I started listening to hard rock/metal. I know I had heard Ozzy fronted Sabbath on the radio, but Eternal Idol was the very first Sabbath album that I bought. So, I started out with Martin, followed by Dio, Gillan, Hughes, and Ozzy last.
I pretty much view the Ozzy era the same as I do early Kiss. I enjoy the hits, but as albums I feel like they have a lot of "Fluff". I find Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabbotage the most interesting with songs like "The Writ", "Megalomania", "Supertzar", "Killing Yourself To Live", etc.

    Great ranking. My personal ranking
20: Forbidden, songs feel uninspired. Tony Iommi propably had his mind on the Ozzy reunion.
19: Never say Die! This shows that the band has fallen apart. Ozzy sounds disinterested and aside from the title track and that’s only because it feels like a Thin Lizzy song. Junior eyes is ok for what it is. I personally can’t stand Johnny blade. Everything else is just forgettable
18: Born again, there are some good songs here Disturbing the Priest, Zero the hero and and the Title Track, but the mix ruins the whole thing for me. It’s muddy and way too raw for its own good.
17: Cross Purposes: a decent record, but it’s feels out of its time so the all the keyboard textures. Coming out in 94 when Grunge and alt rock is all the rage, this falls flat for me.
16: seventh Star: don’t even want to include this cause it wasn’t meant to be a Sabbath Album, but was suppose to be an Iommi Solo, but the label forced him to do. Like Glenn Hughes vocals and songs like In for the Kill, Turn to Stone, Seventh Star, good songs. Not sabbath but decent.
15: technical Ecstasy..this feels more like Sabbath trying to make a Queen Record. Queen is one of my favorite bands, but this style doesn’t do Sabbath any favors. Backstreet kidz and Dirty women are the only goood songs on this. Rock roll doctor sounds, just dumb. If it would’ve been a KISS song I would get it. As a sabbath song, I don’t.
14: Eternal Idol: might’ve been higher if Ray Gillen would’ve song, because I can tell these written with his vocal style in mind, but as is, not to bad. Like songs like The Shining, Glory Ride and Eternal idol. Nightmare could’ve worked on a Dio era sabbath Record
13: TYR: great song, interesting concept. Like songs like Anno Mundi and the Sabbath Stones. The only thing is Feels Good To Me should’ve not been on there at all
12: Sabotage, (sorry) like Hole in the Sky and Symptom of the Universe, but that’s not enough for me to put it higher
11: The Devil you know. I think this album is great. bible black is one of favorite Dio era songs. Atom and Evil and Breaking into heaven. This is just doomy and heavy and I adore it
9: headless Cross. I really like this one. The title track headless cross is a great song. Night wing. Devil and Daughter. When Death Calls is easily the best Tony Martin era Sabbath song.
8: Black Sabbath debut: I like it. Title track, NIB and wicked. It’s creepy, haunting and forbodding.
7: Dehumanizer: this is the heaviest Sabbath Album. Songs like Computer God, Time Machine, After All the Dead, I, Sins of the Father, just amazing
6: paranoid: might be a little low for some, but I never need to hear Paranoid or Iron Man again. Still like War Pigs. The rest is solid
5: volume 4: I like the experimentation here, also giving us some great material like Cornucopia, Under the Sun, Supernaut and Snowblind. Also really love Wheels of Confusion
4: Mob Rules: Sign of the Southern Cross..don’t really need to say any more than that. Great production, also a solid debut from Vinny Appice on Drums, filling in great with the band after Bill Ward
3: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath: The band at the proggiest. Amazing songs like the title Track, National Acrobat, Spiral architect and Sabbra Cadabra, just amazing songwriting from start to finish
2: master of Reality: sweet Leaf, After Forever, Lord Of This world and Children of the Grave. Those are enough to put it in my top 3. Don’t mind Solitude.
1: Heaven and Hell. I can’t really say anything other than you have Dio singing with Sabbath and Martin Birch is producing. What more is there to say? Neon Knight, Children of the Sea, Lady Evil, Die Young, all just total Bangers! And then there’s the title Track, Heaven and hell…can’t get enough Of it
