    • @liamdooley863
      @liamdooley863 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, he really took center stage whenever he played any solos, especially Nocturnal. To be fair - I think a lot of musicians will have a pretty rough idea of a solo going into the studio. They’ll know the key, they might know the scale or mode but the rest they kind of improvise. From what I understand it’s actually pretty rare for a guitarist to have a super precise idea of what their solo will sound like before they get into the studio

    The down-down-up chugging picking technique he said he uses and learned from playing at the gates songs is the same exact technique I learned from Gary Holt at one of his guitar clinics I attended. That technique is a total game changer when playing hard riffs. Instead of down picking every note while switching from the low string to play on a higher string, it makes it easier and cleaner sounding when you use the down-down-up technique. Out of all the lead guitarist BDM has had this guy is by far my favorite. Him and Brian Eschbach create some killer riffs.

    This video has helped me a great deal! i always wondered why i struggled in the "cliffs of dover" part where ellis says johnson actually used an economy picking. I always played that with alternate picking and struggled a lot. thanks man!

    Phenomenal guitarist in a phenomenal band. I wish instructional vids were still a thing; Brandon's would be killer.
