I think he's so so so practised that he's free on the piano, he doesn't need to think about it, he's bored so he can express himself...it's quite a genius I must admit, thought he was overhyped before this but now I know why he's famous. Lots of talent and lots of practice. He plays the piano so easily like one breathes.
I agree with you. Lang Lang really enters into the spirit of this music and brings out its humour and fun in a truly engaging way - very refreshing in an arena that can often take itself too seriously.
If some of you people don't like Lang Lang then DON'T THE VIDEOS OF HIM. Some people are just flat out JEALOUS when it comes to Lang Lang because they know he is one of the best. Again he has earned the right to look however he wants, he has earned it. Some of you people need to read one of his detailed Bios sometime and see just how rough it was for him in his youth days. He had to work VERY hard to become the amazing pianist he is today. Show some respect.
Though it has been awhile since I last heard Lang Lang, I still remember being moved by this performance in my teen years. Now that I've graduated from a conservatory and that I've played this piece, I understood how Lang Lang knows how to work the crowd in a world where classical music is still to be introduced through the Internet. Yes, there's sloppy spots and perhaps too impulsive musicality but this draw me and hundreds of "non-musically-educated" people closer to music. His enjoyment and extra musical gestures seem to tick of some people and that's allowed. All I know is that his generous musicianship moved me. Besides, this was a performance almost a decade ago! He's gone through a lot of change and this is just one of his many perfect or imperfect concerts and he needs it in his process.
Stop trying to justify the butchering of this piece. It is clear his technical ability is not enough for this piece. His rubato makes no sense. His tempo is off the charts. He has a plethora of errors and his dynamics are poor!
Well this proves that you can take the Chinaman out of China but you can't take China out of the Chinaman. He must be using Oriental rhythm and it is horrible.
Although his facial expression is funny, I appreciate at Lang Lang's technique and his musical expression! Music is not only for entertainment, but for spiritual enjoyment! Everyone has the right to comment on Lang's facial expression, however, at the same time, if you do love music, you should pay more attention on the real techniques of him.
Technique is not anything to the love of music.. if music is measured by technique.. then there is a something called MIDI can play anything at marvelous speed with no mistakes and musicality that the editor put
u cant say hes an actor. as soon as he touches one key, he is in performance mode, whether in front of 1000 or by himself. he is one of the greater modern pianists.
Lang Lang offers a love of music which is evident in his playing. He is inventive and relaxed. His enjoyment of the music that somehow comes out of him is infectious. His presentation inspires many to want to play music for the shear enjoyment of playing. The world needs more people playing for this reason.
The man got what it takes to deliver!!! For those of you who don’t like him because of “facial expressions”, my advices, put on the music and close your eyes and enjoy. Music is meant for the EARS not the eyes. If you want something for the eyes visit an Art gallery.
I heard lang Lang play with the Czech Philharmonic live in Dublin Ireland last night. He played the Rachmaninov Variations on a theme by Paganini. He was truly fantastic. He got a standing ovation. He played a John Field Nocturn as an encore.
a genius technic! not only one but a million Fledermauses you' ll see fly.... Even with upper virtuosity, the musicality isn't pressed to the back. Bravo!!!
This is Lang Lang's best recording of the Fledermaus I have heard! Much better than the others! I really enjoyed it and there are some really breathaking moments, musically and technically. But still, Kissin's interpretation remains the ultimate for me.
GREAT ENCORE!!!!! (even though i have shat on lang lang in the past (even on this video), i take it back-- this, though it may not be "music" in the conventional sense is still damn awesome)
When I was in my teens, I played Strauss'Blue Danube arranged by Schulz-Evler, and I remember having a field day with it (perhaps not as excessively as Lang Lang, since my teacher, Adele Marcus, screamed at me for doing that!)I just remember the freedom and the love of the music. I believe Lang Lang is just going through a youthful and exuberant stage in his life--it's nice to see someone embrace this old world style of playing.
I completely agree. Kissin has marvelous technique, but he also has a wonderful sense of balance and harmony. His performance is very noble and much more musical than the Lang Lang's.
For those of you who think he's "acting" or that his expressions are "fake", you must not've ever experienced music the way he, and many other professional musicians, do. When a true pianist touches the piano, its like they forget their surroundings and know only music. They feel the music they play. That's what sets them apart from regular musicians. Search other pianists and you'll also find that, when playing, they are FULLY engrossed in their music.
It is quite an exciting performance, I don;t know why people argue about his expressions. It's eccentric, but most people who are gifted are, so who cares is he pulls faces - more for us to enjoy!
Ok everyone thinks he messed up this peice. but give me a break, this is a freaking transcription that is written for pure virtuosity and enjoyment- so in that sense, he nailed it completely.
why does everyone criticize lang lang? who cares what he looks like when he plays, he plays amazingly and thats all there is to it. If you could play better, prove it!
Lang Lang has earned and worked for all his tallents. So what if he or any one hits a bfew wrong notes. At least we know he is human. I respect this man. I also respect The Video Game Pianist that I got to meet in person. Lang Lang is a master.
Do you even know this piece? Go and compare it with other pianists, this is suppose to be played this fast, but not alot of pianist can do it flawlessly. Lang Lang actually took this piece to a whole other level, geniuses are people who are not afraid to go beyond their boundaries despite what people say and giving a performance that ignites and blows you away!
Why does people hate him so? His facial expressions reveals his feeling for the song. I personally like this performance. BTW> Did you noticed that the video couldn't keep up with his finger motions?
why you say hes not a pianist? He played piano all his live, he is just awesome...love him :) he also is very young and maybe when he is 50 like the other old pianist, he will be the most talentaded pianist over the globe!
His performance great and enjoying to me. I listen to his music, i feel release a lot . I been stress for the whole week, till insomnia. Hope tonight can sleep well.
Yes, it is actually not "kosher" to clap with your hands while playing. Thanks for the compliment - too bad it's not true. Lang Lang is a great inspiration for new students - he's young, enjoyable, and well rehearsed. Way to go!

I'd have to agree with Poojoj... (who despite a considered and thoughtful post has been thumbed-down by the fanboys..) There is no doubt that Lang Lang has introduced classical music to an audience who might not have otherwise gotten into it - and for that he should be applauded. The fact remains, he simply doesn't compare with the 'greats'.
Lang Lang gets too much taken away from him. He is an unbelievable pianist. I saw him in Birmingham, England in Sept 2011 and everyone there was completely blown away by him, I certainly was! I think most people know some of his interpretations can be somewhat different, but that doesn't mean he's no good or can't play pieces without feeling or a sense of understanding. I highly recommend people watch Lang Lang Live in Vienna - sensational!!!
Pareciera que lang lang estuviera siempre en una competencia de velocidad cada vez que toca, para demostrar que el puede tocar mas rapido que cualquiera
Musicality or musicianship can be plain or very complex depending on how you want to define it. To me, if majority of the people like the music, it must be pretty good musicality, that's how the world works, plain and simple. On the other hand, if you have a pre-conceived idea of what music MUST sound to be of good musicality, you make things complex for yourself, and you run the risk of being a LONELY PERSON. There's a real question with pieces like this as to how much musical value a pianist can bring to them. Lang Lang's version is probably a little more fun to listen to precisely because he doesn't treat it like it's Beethoven. Kissin's is a much more musical account, but not quite as exciting.
Yeah, this piece is very well played by Lang lang. He demonstrates alot of talent. I have a question. When he does those glascendos...(err i think spelling is incorrect) does he just hit white notes all the way up and down? or is there more?
0112337. I agree. I enjoyed this performance. I cannot understand why people criticize others. If I don't like someone's playing I just don't comment. Lang Lang is clearly very talented. He is also very popular and is introducing many to classical music, which is just great. :)
I had the great pleasure of meeting him back when he was 19 years old. He played the Liszt Pagannini Etudes like a god. Too bad he has never recorded them.
The best, the best, the best...sounds like some sort of a soccer match here, reading all these comments...How about just accepting that this illusion that there's "the best pianist in the world" somewhere "out there" is just an illusion, and nothing else. There are countless fantastis players, and admittedly Lang Lang is one of them, but there is no "best pianist in the world"! No matter how hard one strives and how much one achieves, there will ALWAYS be somebody somewhere who does even more.
Alfred Grunfeld - a Viennese pianist (1852-1924). Grunfeld made a lovely and gentle recording of this piece himself in 1910 (reissued on CD as VAI/IPA 1019). Kissin's is really superb, but Lang Lang makes a banging hash out of it.
Well I had a lot of fun watching and hearing this! I don't know if I prefer the android-perfection of Kissin playing this, or Lang Lang's mistakes, modifications of the original score and questionable taste. I bet that if you were to set Lang Lang on a desert island and asked him what two objects he would want, he would say, "My piano and my nail-clipper, to make sure that I can continue playing!!!"
I must confess to liking the dynamic contrasts. The subito pianissimo at 0.56 in particular is a Horowitz-like nuance that made my pulse stop in a pleasant way. And it shows he's not just a machine. Which is a shame. If he were more of a machine (or if he put a bag over his head) we would not have to deal with his absurd facial contortions.

He is one of the very BEST. He has the right to look the way he does with his facial expressions.
He's an acrobat on the piano and no matter what people make comments about him, he's popular and has the most endorsements among other pianists.
He may be a "Showboat", but the man is simply a genius with an invredible talent.
