Just think of this: during a LIVE televised concert, one of the singer could not sing and a 21 year old Lang lang was asked to fill in the time without difficult and he came out played one of the most preparation piano pieces. Look at the faces of the orchestra members, wow!!!
I really love how he paces even the relatively "simpler" parts like the introductory two minutes. So much drama even in just a one or two bar crescendo lol
When was the last time you ve seen the entire orchestra sitting there and listening for nearly 20minutes? They have no clue what he was going to do! No one knows! That's one of the reason this was so amazing!
harbin guy ? What are they supposed to do? Get up and walk out? This was a great performance as s walk in. Its in 2003. It was recorded LIVE on VHS. I wish PBS had better video. It is truly jaw dropping performance consider someone was sick this guy had to fill the 25 min spot without rehearsal! He came out with this notorious difficult piece.
@@szilike_10 I have the DVD on that one, thanks. But the one in 2003, it was unannounced , unrehearsed because the soprano was sick, he was ask to fill in 25 min slot on a LIVE concert! No one knew what he was gonna to do. I wish I could get better recording.
His Carnegie Hall version of the Don Giovanni is more controlled and impeccable! This one is a bit reckless and full of mistakes. Both versions are breathtaking!
The chromatic thirds are very clean for a live performance! I've heard so many live version of this piece but the thirds were very sloppy. A little bit reckless in some parts but the recklessness seem fitting in context with the piece .

Not so much a fan of him normally, but he owned this piece. Technically and musically better than Barere and Hamelin. And this wasn't even his best recording of the piece.
Mainly because the soprano was sick and canceled her performance. The organizer asked Lang lang if he can fill the 25 min by doing some encore. It was a live broadcast concert.

Just as much a facial "performance" as anything, and to top things off, there's the trademark, triumphant raised arms with clenched fists. Who said he eschews theatrics?
The fact this is an encore blows my mind.

It kinda sounds like applause? But why would people applaud in the middle of the piece? Some people still do. But it's a little bit hard to tell.

Why are there sports announcers for this performance.
