I saw him play at a jam during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival this weekend. Didn't know him before, but I immediately knew I was lucky to witness something special. He's so clean and so musical. Could listen to him play for hours
Not that I'm an expert but it is my impression that Ms. Elias is possibly the best and most accomplished female jazz pianist we have today. Her style uniquely combines strength and softness unlike anyone else I know... imho. I love her style.
".....how did you manage to get Eliane....." She's a fan of Tiny Desk. She wanted to be on the show. And it's an excellent career move; it gets you visible to a whole lot of people who might not know who you are.
Eliane is a bossa nova and latin jazz legend. I was lucky enough to see her in a live concert here in Spain a few years ago and I keep her signed CD as a treasure. Thank you for bringing her to the Tiny Desk! 😊
Glorious, elaine flying the flag for Brazilian bossa jazz and more. Had the enormous pleasure of seeing her and the band live on a few occasions, mind-blowing concerts. This lady is supremely talented and totally unique. Share the music magic!
Honestly, I believe that Brazilian set players and percussionists are the most versatile - and sensitive - in the world, at least when it comes to jazz + all the different genres of Brazilian music. This guy's work reminds me a lot of Marcio da Bahia, who plays set + hand percussion.
Wow! A BIG fan of Eliane Elias. As others have mentioned, the drummer was unbelievable on his solo. Starting with his partido alto groove and from hands, brushes, and sticks with impeccable technique and touch, mixing it it up with samba, jazz, and Afro-Cuban so seamlessly woven together. Wow!
Cuando salió a la luz el jazz la música tuvo la expresión del alma al interior de cada ejecutante...cuando apareció la samba ...el bossa Nova...y se unió al jazz
It's not enough to listen, you have to look at the expression on the faces while everyone plays their own instrument to fully savor the joy that this music gives you. Thank you! 👏❤️
OMG! what was that! As a Brazilian I am so happy right now and feel like our country is well represented by these incredible talent. Can't wait to see them at the Catalina Jazz Club in LA next week!
Thank you so much Eliane, Marc, Rafael and Leandro for sharing your talent and your beautiful music with the world. Thank you NPR for inviting these great musicians.
Holy moly, this was an experience!!! In my opinion, it doesn't get any better than this. Praise to the musicians, audio engineer and Tiny Desk team. A lots of love.
Too few Americans know of her. She is amazing and a link with Bill Evans and old time bossa nova. That's what makes jazz so great - the threads that continue from one generation to the next.
Oh, this Is so nice! You can’t sit still. You have to dance when this music starts. Elaine is so great and beautiful and her groupi is amazing! I just love this sexy brazilianflavoured jazz!!
I have been following Eliane since her beginnings with Steps Ahead, with Michael Brecker and Mike Mainieri. She is very innovative, personal and delicate. She has a lot of class. Her efforts to spread MPB are praiseworthy and wonderful. The music of Brazil and jazz could not be seen in any other way without her. Her characteristic phrasing on the piano is unmistakable. Long live her art and her person.
I saw the trio of Eliane Elias with Rafael Barata at a private concert in France, it was unforgettable. Being a drummer myself, I can say that Rafael Barata is an incredible master drumer and musician. There is so much to learn and enjoy from his technique and musicianship. One life wouldn’t be enough. Eliane ans Marc are such a miracle : a legend of acoustic bass, two giant musicians and a wonderful couple. Mr Pellegrino is at the same level, what a great musician!
This is about as good as it gets! I've been listening to Eliane for probably close to thirty years, and it just gets better. Incredible! Thank you so much for what you do.
I just saw her at Birdland in NY in March 2023. What an ensemble! They are like one body and one mind. Eliane is so nice, friendly, and non-diva! And can she play the piano! I can't wait to have the opportunity to see them again.
Absolutely at the top of her game. Thanks Tiny Desk, I lost track of Eliane somewhere in the transition from CDs to streaming. Time to start listening again.
So very, very, very happy to see Elaine Elias and her band on Tiny Desk. What great Jazz chops on the keys! Her fusion of bossa novas rhythms in a straight-ahead setting, skattin' (wanted way more), clean Jazz keyboard stylings made my currenr trip away from home much more palatable!
My father LOVES jazz and has had a crush on this woman for years. I've finally hit the age where I can appreciate jazz as a genre and the talent we get to experience
@@NestorCarvalhoJr hi Nestor! Might be "splitting hairs", but (as a drummer) i'm hearin' some Samba & Straight Ahead jazz, too... Probably all could be placed in category of Latin Jazz, & YES -she's GREAT!!!
First, I want to thank my wife for sending me this link. Their music is wonderful! This is my first time hearing them and I'm adding them to my playlist. Brazilian Bossa-Nova was first introduced to me in the '60s with Sergio Mendes and I will look through her discography. Finally, if only YT would run the ads during the breaks. It make watching this so much more enjoyable.
Absolutely incredible!!!! When I started listening to Eliane I thought she was a blend of Tania Maria and Chick Corea return to forever band. But this was just a sensory delight to be able to watch! Every musician in this video is remarkable but a extra special mention to the drummer! That playing the drums like congas then transition to the brushes and sticks nah man that was magic 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
I’m from Indonesia…i.ve been waiting for Eliane Elias one of my favorite musician. I hope one day my idol Dianne Reeves also will perform here in tiny desk.
I thank God I'm alive to witness Eliane and the team once again. Bless you all in these 'interesting times', and may God bless you all with many more years of this.....Thank You Still have your first album...and many which follow..XOXO😇
Wow! Thank you Tiny Desk for introducing me to this band. The Bill Evans connection and a Brazilian Buddy Rich were just the tonic I needed tonight. Can't wait to explore more of their work.
Bravo NPR for another fine discovery! I rarely listen to the radio these days (other than KCRW in LA) and yet my life and musical library have been enriched by so many of the talented musicians NPR has featured in this tiny desk series. Eliane Elias, Jorge Drexler, C Tangana, Natalia Lafourcade, Diego el Cigala, Chick Corea, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Sting/Shaggy, Dua Lipa, Yo Yo Ma, Sesame Street, Death Cab for Cutie. These are a few of my favorites that come to mind. Keep up the amazing work! 🎉
What a wonderful band - each and every one of these super amazing musicians. As for Eliana she is my go to place every day when I just want to relax and enjoy the absolute best of exciting, fabulous and magical music. Thank you all so much - it is early morning and yet again you are starting my day for me with a big smile on my face and my foot tapping out the rhythm of their music.
Was so pleasantly surprised to see the legendary Eliane Elias here! What an amazing life of music. Witnessed many concerts of Her and Marc. Everlasting inspiration. Thanks for this! ❤
I saw them play in Durham, NC Friday night in a small theater. Amazing! Great to be able to hear live Brazilian jazz in North Carolina. I hope they come back - would love to see/hear them again.
I saw this quartet last year. Before the show I was speaking with Marc Johnson and he told me what a great drummer Rafael was. Let me tell you, Rafael was beyond superb. Totally blew me away. What a find for this band.

Wow, it’s been a LOOONG while since I’ve seen Marc play. Wouldn’t have recognized him if not for your comment!

He is a legend. Love the album The Sound of Summer Running
