      Christian B I’ve only ever had them howl back... for the most part they don’t wanna be near us so while they might even circle downwind to see what we are that’s about as far as it goes... have one follow me all day once... it would yip every once in awhile so I knew it was there but never once showed himself.

      @@christianb8228 Coyotes avoid people for the most part. They are scavengers and opportunity hunters, so they will only confront anything larger than them if they are packed up (though that's usually only an adult breeding pair and their yearling offspring) and starving, or injured and cornered. Its been a pretty mid winter so I doubt they are starving this year. But they are social animals so "talking" is very common. If you worry about animals in the wild, just bring a dog with you. They are deterrents and wireless early warning devices.

      I totally agree with you on this.
      I am a Kiwi gal (New Zealander and in my 60s now) and Alexis you are my favourite wilderness you tuber.
      We are an outdoors nation, and you are able to do what we could do back in the 1960s and 70s. Still can in some places, but not as many as back then. 😊
      And our national parks are highly respected, with a leave no trace policy, but our Department of Conservation maintains some great back country huts in some of them, as well as in many other areas.
      We are not allowed dogs in the national parks or on our great walks, to conserve our flightless native birds etc, which is good.
      Plenty of places to take our dogs outside of the national parks. ❤️

    Smart bringing your dog as a sentry & protector! Look into possibly buying a US Army military surplus extreme cold weather system (Sleeping bag). They are very reasonable used, just take them to a dry cleaner & its like brand new clean at 1/2 the cost of the high end sleep systems. It comes in 3 pieces, a light black summer bag, a heavier weight medium green bag for fall/winter & combine them together for extreme cold nights while placed inside a Gortex waterproof outer shell. Warm & dry you will be just like us soldiers on winter field operations! Hope you get that piece of land someday & can enjoy the woods as much as you wish. Enjoy your videos & wish you continued success!

      Tammarishka - prop up two sticks on one side of the fire and two sticks on the other. Make sure the sticks are slanted away from the fire, and kept rigidly in place e.g. with a support of some kind. Then on each slanted pair of sticks place a pile of small logs suitable for firewood; the logs at the bottom will burn in the fire, and each subsequent log will descend into the fire due to gravity once the log below it is burned away.

    Just in time for my lunch break :) Awesome job so far! If it's any consolation re: your lack of winter bag, I spent a lot on a -20 bag last winter. It's bigger than my summer and shoulder season bags combined, and probably no warmer than the two of them if they were combined. If I could do it again, I would probably stick with the two original bags and add an overbag. Then I'd have a modular system that can be tailored to the conditions rather than just one huge bag. And/or put that money into a high R-value pad. This vid is going to do AMAZING!

    • @careenaalexis
      @careenaalexis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Echo4PapaBravo
      @Echo4PapaBravo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. I can see why some people might need expensive lightweight gear, but I've never felt the need to pay that much for it only to use it for a single season. I'm used to the MSS I used for years in the USMC, so for me, having one bag for each season doesn't make much sense. Sure, its bulky, but I can use it from 40F down to -20F by just adding an extra bag (only take whats necessary for the environment you're in)...plus it has a bivvy so I never have to worry about 100% waterproof shelters. I roll it all up inside the bivvy, including a deflated sleep pad, and stuff it in a 30L drybag, it takes up less room than a tent/hammock and sleep system. All I take are tools (which can include hunting/fishing gear depending on season) and food. In case I need to drop the pack for some reason, I keep everything that I "need" for survival in a Hill People Gear chest rig or on my belt. I mean, what do you really "need" to enjoy the outdoors safely? A tarp, a sleep system, a spare set of clothing/socks, a couple of cutting tools, some cordage, a small fire kit, a head lamp, IFAK, maps/compass, metal container that nests with a drinking container and some food. And a high-speed wireless personal protection device, in her case its a Grizz.

A proper air mattress. I just used a good summer bag that I made with a drawstring at the top. And a good double ' wool toque ' , large size. Now the secret , A Big 'Space Blanket' ! ! As a bottom and top outer for the bag. I slept like a bug in the rug.

    I’m in southern Ontario too, it’s frustrating, I’d love to do some wild camping but all the land is owned by farmers here and crown land is 5 hours away.. too far to just head out for a weekend. I’m stuck with heading to Algonquin on my vacation time of 2 weeks a year. I’d sure love to get out more than that. The provincial parks here in southern Ontario are so overcrowded in the warm months that camping is not even enjoyable, plus since I started backcountry camping I’ll never site camp again! I love you and Ryan’s canoe trip videos because that’s where my passion is but this video was just as good. 👍

    Ok---after googling minus 15 C, now I know how cold it was there.😂 I thought of your shelter this past Monday, on a mountain snow shoe trip. I under estimated the weather there, and it was minus 9 F. (I googled it for you, that's minus 22 C. 😎) The winds picked up, and it became a miserable trip quick. Deciding to cut the hike short, and needing to get out of the wind, I discovered a downed pine tree, with a hollowed out space beneath it just big enough to crawl under for shelter. The wind didn't break, but after coffee and a short rest, I was ready to make the rest of the way. Only a mile or so, but a long mile!!! The bough's I was under made a great little shelter and wind break. I thought of your video and of you building your bough shelter. It's looking good. Enjoy it. Be safe. Roger
