I absolutely love drop tunings. But, man. Nothing can ever beat standard for me. But, I have 2 8 strings. So, I guess chunky riffs come naturally to those guitars anyway. Lol
When I first started, I remember playing System of a Down tunes in standard E tuning. I realized it sounded a bit off but I just kept going until one day when I looked it up on the internet.
As a tuning maniac, I loved this video. As much as I love drop C and drop A tunings, I'm a low-budget musician, so I stick to the good ol' drop D tuning for my own songs :D
I play in drop A on my 200 EUR Harley Benton Les Paul clone, amazing quality for the price and massive versatility they offer 7 strings and baritones too
I was just talking about this to a friend. I almost always play standard but when there’s a drop (whatever) riff I like. I just play it on drop D lol SUE ME
When I was 14 just starting out once I learned power chords I realized I could do it one finger if I dropped the low string. I started doing it and I thought I came up with it 😂. Yea, I was pretty ignorant. I was bummed when I learned that was already a thing lol.
For me drop tuning is just so relaxing to play in. Just one finger power chords instead of two. But preferably for metal I prefer simply Downtuning to a lower standard tuning. Im a brutal death metal type of guy, so I like to stay in the more traditional c# sharp standard. It’s not high but not too low. Perfect tuning for that type of metal. I like the challenge of playing fast two finger power chords. But drop tuning is just so fun.
Hey Rob, I'm glad TH-cam recommended your channel to me. Let me tell you how we met in 2003, because I still remember that :D You were on the Roadrage Tour in 2003 with Chimaira, together with Ill Nino and Spineshank. When you played the Markthalle in Hamburg (Germany), my friend got us passes to interview the bands, because she worked at a small, local radio station. We talked to Laz from Ill Nino, Mikey from Spineshank and to you from Chimaira. I was like 17, super nervous and my english already sucked back then. You explained to me how to play pinch harmonics, because I asked you how you play those "high notes" in some songs. You took out a pick and explained it, simple as that. Thanks again, man. I also took pictures with you, Laz and Mike. I still have those :D Too bad I missed half of your set, because the morons running the place took like forever to let all the people in. Anyway, it was nice to meet you back then and it is good so see that you are still making music. Greetings from Germany, Chris
Haha that's awesome Chris! That was a super fun tour for us, and I totally remember Hamburg! I always loved playing in Germany, and hope for the opportunity to do so again one day! Cheers brother, and I'm glad you've found my channel as well!🤘
Chimaira, wow... You're one of the bands that got me into metalcore. Some of your songs that blew me away were Six, Secrets of the Dead, Eyes of a Criminal, Down Again, Everything You Love... Sure there's more. Thanks very much for all the hard work, still amazing music to listen to. Great to see you're still active on the instrument & online.
I remember learning all of this with my friend Richie. I spent 16 to 18 months learning all of the tunings. And how easy it was just to tune the 6th string. Made my playing a lot better. For the bell tolls, Am I evil and smoke on the water. I learned to play them in Standard E.
A couple of years ago I started experimenting with Drop C. But since my band wanted to play at Standard E I settle for Drop D from time to time. Now I think how interesting it would be one of the guitars in that tone and the other without dropping... Regards !
nice video rob :) what i do with one of my guitars is to tune in drop E (standard E) like you do but i go with the rest of the strings a whole step up ;) so i can play standard tuning in drop :p

Thanks for the video. Always good to have a reference to revisit. This kinda stuff gets me pumped after not playing for weeks. Especially because Chimaira is still my fav band. I play it loud and proud at the restaurant kitchen 🏠
Weirdly enough, I was never really overly interested in studying up on drop tunings, even though I seriously love listening to it, but I’m a lazy player in my old age. (I spend the lions share of my time building and modding nowadays) But cupids arrow struck, and I’ve fallen in love with alternative tunings over the last few years, but it wasn’t metal that turned me onto them but Queens of the Stone Age! I’m not sure why, but C standard and D standard lately are just stuck in my craw.

Still didn't get what's behind that Drop tuning stuff...I tuned down do C standard. Tuning down just the lowest string will make chords easier for sure but all scales for leads are fucked up. And chords on E/A string are different than on A/D string... But I have to do it so all good 😂

That's EXACTLY how I feel about playing 7 string guitars. All of my go-to sweet spots are gone!
Hey Rob, what about string gauges and drop tunings? What string gauges do people normally use with dropped tunings ?
I like 10's for E and drop D.
I like 11's for drop C and drop B.
I like 11's + an additional 60 gauge for drop A on a 7 string. 🤘
I use 13s and tune to drop F#
