Three years after, some of us are still discovering this example of a perfect TH-cam video lesson. The teacher is a transparent speaking guy that goes right to the point, giving an amazingly balanced mixture of thorough but simple explanations where everything is relevant, understandable and taken to a practical and inspiring level with the examples. And then, as an added bonus, we have added graphics (with tabs and pentagram!) and timestamps. All these details are very telling about the quality of a teacher: he's not just showing you something, he's making sure you learn it, advancing with a steady pace, but not rushing through it, repeating key elements, giving you tools (pun intended) to go further with practice. Big kudos and huge thank you, you've made me forget about what I was searching for here and made me stand up and drop-D-tune my guitar!
It's nice to see experienced instructors once in a while go back to the basics and not assume that everyone can move at the same pace. It shows a commitment to teaching and awareness of a wide spectrum of students! ✅👍
As a Tool fan i have massive respect for Axe of Creation but anyone interested in guitar and learning must give this guy the kudos and like and subscribe. It really is amazing content.
Been playing dropD for probably 20 years now and I still watch videos like this hoping I learn something new. Understandably I didn't, but this video is really good for beginners. I wish you tube was around when I was learning how to play guitar. Far better teachers on here than myself at 15 years old trying to teach myself with no instruction. Thanks for the video, very enjoyable and informative, cheers!
Awesome ! This video should be 10 years old and have 1 billion views. It would save me lots of time figuring Dropp tuning by myself! Great work Gregory :)
The absolute best drop D tutorial on youtube. I keep one of my guitars tuned to dD just to experiment with. The ease with which you can get different sounds is amazing.
Thank you, The best Drop D lesson I very much needed. I recently purchased a used 2001 Ibanez AX 125, made 2001-2004. Ibanez made this model specifically for playing in Drop D. It has a switch below the bridge on the Low E string. Tune it to E. Throw the switch and it goes to D. For the next song in standard and throw the switch back and it is back to E.
Been watching drop D vids all over YT and finally found yours. You are the first teacher that has made it so simple for me that I can jump right in! THANK YOU!
Good stuff! I’ve been playing drop D for years and growing up I had to fiddle all these chords out by myself but this helps new droppies a lot. One of the most awesome tunings and for some reason it sounds so good playing 3/4 riffs. Keep it up! Cheers.
Dude. Love your approach. Especially the beginning of the video teaching about using your ear to hear vibrations. Such an important lesson for anyone learning any kind of music. Im an advanced player and I use a tonne of open chords in my writing. Learning to hear vibrations just to tune your guitar in standard tuning should be one of the first things any teacher should guide their students to learn. Well done. I will be checking out more of your content
Always drop a bit lower than D (or whatever note you want to tune to) and tune back up to it. Keeps string(s) from going out of tune. Same concept with all strings and whatever you tune them to. Just remember, make sure you tune a little flat and always TUNE BACK UP to desired pitch. This is generally for fixed bridge, non-locking string guitars but same principle with locking and/or basic tremolo equipped guitars. Only thing is with a locking system that has fine tuners, you don't have to worry about this with the fine tuners as long as you tuned up the way I described before you lock down the strings.
Hey man, I've been watching some of your TOOL tutorials and they're great. This is the video that convinced me to subscribe to your channel. Thanks and keep up the awesome work!
@Nemesis 86 I've gotta restring my Martin, I was sorely disappointed with the last set I put on it, I had hoped to post a simple song I had learned but I will restring and be back, thanks!
Great instructions. Learned a few new things, and your examples are clear and well explained. Thanks for not going in too deep into the music theory weeds!
Man thank you i am new to drop d tuning and this is not only helpful but the way you are teaching and explaining is exactly how i need to hear this for my brain and the way i think thank you and keep on rockin and teaching the way you do take care!!
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your videos. You are a wonderful teacher. Your videos are essential for people like me. I m from India, the entire nation is fucking Bollywood crazy. Videos like yours greatly help us understand techniques and equipment. Its all Veena, Sitar, Carnatic and corny dance music out here man!
Thank you for all your teaching videos. Especially for us beginners...an opening of the universe for the guitar... Stay healthy...Greetings from Berlin Germany.
Great video as always mate!! Seriously a gem on youtube. Deserve so many more subs! Always explain everything so simply. Thanks for all our hard work making these vids! Keep it up! Legend haha
That guitar sounds great man !! Drop D tuning = even the song "The End" by The Doors uses that tuning I've been playing Tool by ear when I started playing guitar - the Patient was my first. I'd get a kick out of playing it every single time Being my favorite ( in the long run ) out of Lateralus - let's just say it has a very special place in my heart. But playing Rage Against The Machine and Tool I rarely if ever came across those Major and Minor Power Chords. It took until much later learning tunes by Plini and Intervals to really use them more. Still Rage and Tool are a great fun way to start on a guitar journey - at some point you just have to step out of the Beginner to Intermediate level
When I first discovered power chords (organically, by accident just fooling around), I thought I had stumbled upon some kind of secret "cheat". It couldn't be _that_ easy and certainly not how my heroes Tony Iommy and Ritchie Blackmore got their awesome sound. This is another such cheat/aha moment for me. My musical palette has been greatly expanded, and I have the technical skill to implement it already. The more you know, the more you know, the more you know! Thank you kind sir. #Instasub!
NOOB here. Everything you are playing sounds great! Especially Adam Jones riffs from Tool! You are going so fast, I can't keep up. I guess I need to take some lessons!!
Just learn Creed’s Human Clay album from top to bottom and you’ll learn everything you need to know about Drop D. Everything else after will just be an extension of what’s been done on that album.
...except for all the stuff in Drop D that came before it. My band was using it in the late 80s after the Crossover/ Thrash explosion. Choose Sabbath, Prong, S.O.D., Kings X & Voivod over Creed 24/7/365 bro.
There are other little tricks to Drop D like playing the sus 2 chords but open d. I've also discovered that some open d and A and fretted D chords sound good (my ears like them!) Definitely the tuning for me though I do dabble in standard E as well. I'm just very heavily inspired by Tool in my sound.

I'm slowly getting back into playing guitar and this really brings inspiration back, I will try this tuning! Heavy stuff. We like!
Do the drop D at 436-438. Serious heavy sound.
@@10INCHCRUSHER can you please explain?
@@JesusLordOfLords455 The sound is more full. A440 sounds to sterile to me.
