I been hearing people say this for years. But truthfully, because they find genius ways to lose your ability to count timings to their songs (without insane effort), you just stop trying and go along for whatever they're doing. The math works out, you can trust that and forget "where the 1 is" to their stuff. Yeah, it's different than nearly anything else ever written.

There's a video on YT of group of school kids playing this and it is mind blowing, they were just kids. It's called 'Kids Cover 46 and 2 by Tool / O'Keefe Music Foundation'. You really need to watch the video. They forgo the long intro and get straight into the meat of the song. You'll love the one kid that looks to be 9 or 10 yrs old and the lead singer can't be more than 12! Her voice will send chills down your spine and your jaw will be back on the floor. They were scary good.

I've enjoyed Tool for a long ass time and what gives me my Tool kick these days, aside their music, is watching TH-cam videos, not of reactors experiencing Tool for the first time, but young musicians performing Tool songs.
The O'Keefe Foundation kids did a fantastic rendition of "46 and 2" and Sober (among many great songs from other great artists) and there's plenty other videos where kids take a go at playing Tool songs.
On top of that, you Have Danny Carey having several videos floating around TH-cam where he either joins kids in their band practice or performs live with them.
Tool is probably going to be around releasing new songs for a while yet, but we can be assured that their music has carried over generations and the Tool influence is going to give us better music going forward.

People who say they're boring and uninteresting, but most people saying that are usually the boring, uninteresting ones who just hop on the Tool hate bandwagon to get some attention. Tool fans can be very obnoxious people sometimes though but if you just focus on the music and the quality and the message between the lines, Tool is an unbeatable band.

In musical terms you are trying to describe the time signature changes (for example this song changes between 4/4 and 7/8 mostly ( count 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,5,6,7), odd time signatures in general, polyrhythms, odd accent placements, riffs, dynamic changes and much much more. It is a complex task even for an experienced musician.
There will surely be a ton of great suggestion on your Tool journey so I will suggest something else. For your Nightwish journey I urge you to try "Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars - Live rehearsals remastered at Sonic Pump Studios". Since you seem to love drummers, well, in that one the current Nightwish drummer Kai Hahto blasts your braint into oblivion!
If you want something even more complex, Dream Theater will blow your mind. Something like Dance of Eternity.

Lots of great suggestions in other comments for ways to branch out into more Tool. I highly recommend those as well!
But let me add one: 10000 Days / Wings for Marie Parts I and II (listen to these back to back for full effect). Maynard's mom suffered a stroke when he was younger, and she was permanently disabled as a result for close to 30 years after. These songs were Maynard's way of coming to terms as a staunch atheist with his mom maintaining her faith to the end, and with the people in her church who were utter hypocrites in his view. Knowing that bit about his life, and knowing how intensely personal these two songs are to him, I can only tell you that there is a moment that brings me to tears every single time - perhaps surprising coming from a band like Tool, but there it is.

A tool song can be pretty hard to follow sometimes due to the constantly changing and alot of times complex time signatures. To quote Mike Portnoy of dream theater, " its not a song, its a fucking math equation"! (Talking about the song "pneuma")

That’s a great video of Portnoy covering Pneuma. It’s a hoot. Great match up. Can’t think of too many current drummers who could take it on. Kenny? I wonder if Grohl could.

Also great in Tool's catalogue: The Grudge, Lateralus, Parabol/Parabola, Schism, Jimmy, H., Pushit (album version), Ænema, Vicarious, Third Eye. Spiral out, keep going! I'd just suggest foregoing their music videos for reactions though, they're usually disturbing/distracting stop-motion/claymation because the 90s and early 00s were a strange time 😶‍🌫

Tool is what happens when no one in the band has ever said, 'do you think this might be a little too complex for the average listener'. They just follow the music where ever it goes.

Being overwhelmed initially is what makes every TOOL song new every listen, for years and decades to come. This doesn't even touch on the esoteric architecture of their albums. They truly are a stand alone force in uncountable ways. The more you dig, the more there is to uncover. No end, just ever-growing beauty that ultimately points to the perfection of God's Creation.

Saw Tool live a couple of times and A Perfect Circle a couple of times. I can't think of any songs that aren't brilliant between the two Maynard led bands. Every single person is a phenomenal musician and they're almost perfect live. There's always a unique twist to songs thrown in to keep things interesting.

TOOL albums ala the elements of Captain Planet:
    Fire-Undertow
    Earth-Aenima
    Wind-10,000 Days
    Water-Fear Innoculum
    Heart-Lateralus
You should check out the live studio recording video of Towers by the band Dvne. They're a progressive metal band from Scotland. Heavier than this, but based on your reaction, I think you would really dig it sonically.
    Great reaction. Spiral out!

the trick with tool, you have to listen multiple times, then after the 4th or 5th time, you really start to see how great these guys are. composure, structurally, these guys are masters at their craft.

Maynard is also the lead singer for A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, both great bands to check out as well. Orestes live at red rocks is an amazing song, and an even better performance. If you like tool (duh), you will probably find those bands interesting as well, although nothing compares to tool 😎

I quite often see Tool and Pink Floyd both mentioned in the same comments. Their music is obviously different but they each abslutely always take you on a journey with every song. I can't think of any other bands that do that so consistenly through such a large catalog.
