Everyone should be fooled, _hard,_ so we learn that **none of us know as much as we believe we do.** I think it would be really helpful, as a teaching aid, to make sure that kids learn this through a memorable - but not cruel or mean - experience, just like DB does here. Mentalism tricks are very effective at getting people's attention. It can be similarly shocking and illuminating to learn that it was but a trivial task to completely decieve your mind. It should not be so unusual for people to grasp the concept that basically anyone, with a little charisma and malicious intent, can lead you places you don't want to go. You are not specially able to defend yourself from tricks, at least until you see how simple it can be for malicious charisma to subtly push you into believing nonsense that only benefits the deciver. On top of that, the most effective charlatans will have you _convinced_ you that you made up your own mind, freely choosing something that you actually believe benefits _you,_ when they've been guiding you to where they can best exploit you. They'll compliment you, and inflate your confidence, so you believe it's not even _possible_ for you to be fooled. After all, why would you fight against someone taking advantage of you, if you're confident that it's not even possible for it to happen to you? It's so important to dissuade the notion that your intellect is a fully reliable method of evaluating objective reality. Add a little bit of revelatory shock, of having that proverbial rug pulled out from beneath one's feet, followed by a discussion to make sure the main points weren't missed. Explain epistemology and the basics of the scientific method, to help develop reasonable people who have the skills and knowledge to capably avoid some of the pitfalls we see so many adults completely fall for. Evaluating and understanding the ways people are fooled, and more importantly the way they fool themselves, is incredibly powerful and important for long-term human survival. I would like to see a mentalist be employed for such work, so each kid experiences what I'm talking about at least once or twice, perhaps around the ages of 5-10, then hopefully again between 15-20. It's incredibly disheartening to see how so, _so_ many of my fellow humans exhibit the irrational/illogical overconfidence indicative of having fallen into a Dunning-Krüger sort of mindset. These are the people who actually _believe_ they're capable of, say, being the head of state. And they win, because they exude full confidence; we think to ourselves, _"I_ wouldn't be that confident, unless I really knew what I was doing..." so we assume that they must be competent, to be so incredibly confident. And people who have no clue what they're doing, who are self-centered and don't understand or care that they're a wrecking ball impacting countless human lives. They think problems only exist because everyone _else_ is dumb - that it's simply because smart people like _them_ haven't taken a crack at it yet. Imagine how useful it would have been, for all of us, if someone like that didn't live their entire life, into their seventies even, genuinely _believing_ they're a genius, while incapable of picking up on the countless signs that they are, if anything, _not smart._ **sigh**
I agree with everything besides the last paragraph. Why is it disheartening to see people with confidence achieve the goals they are after? As long as they're not out there intentionally hurting others it doesn't really matter. Life is a playground with many variables and possibilities.
