Do you want the price of vanilla to go up to pay him more? Be my guest. Yes their wages are low, RELATIVE to ours. But over there in Madagascar people make less money, but their cost of living is a lot less as well. They wouldn’t be working for pennies as you say, if it wasn’t worth it for them.

The pods need to ferment for the flavor to develop. Most dessert manufacturers will use vanillin (artificial vanilla) unless they label natural or vanilla bean as an ingredient. Vanilla orchids bloom for a month, so hand pollentaing can occur every 2-3 days, not just one day for a blossom.

Baked goods of all kinds tend to include vanilla. Some sauces for meat, like for chicken, lamb, beef, duck or pork use vanilla. He is. The GDP per capita in Madagascar is $500.51. That’s US dollars per year.
A quick google search shows that 50 beans make a kilo. The video shows about 13 beans per bunch which came from one flower. So he pollinates 500 flowers a day, assuming 10 beans per flower are good, that’s 5,000 beans a day or 100 kilos. 100 kilos x $17 per kilo is $1,700.
And that’s just from one day of pollinating.
Even without doing all the math it’s obvious that in a country with a $500 GDP per capita this guy is killing it.
Go work hard and start your own business instead of condemning everything you (falsely) perceive to be wrong with the world.

They load it into 40lbs bags which equals 18.144kilos... so thats $308.85 per 40lb bag... or 1,401,113.78 Ariary essentially they're making way more than the avg income for madagascar. They conveniently left out how many bags he sells per bloom so I doubt he is selling one 40lb bag per bloom. Even if he only sells 2 or 3 per bloom he is make well over madagascar medium income in fact he would be considered rich there.

One does not just sell products on other countries. There are a lot of process and legalities along the road. Logistics, packing, marketing and branding to name a few of those processes. Those are not cheap. You can source any material for cheap price, but once you actually try to import and sell them, you'll know how expensive the final cost would be no matter how much you try to press them down. Raise the price and you'll lose to your competitors.
Remember, it's always the customers that will complain if the price is too high. So keep in mind.

That said, if Madagascar controls 80% of the world's vanilla market, maybe if the farmers worked together, they could leverage an increase in price for themselves? Because the vanilla beans are resold in the US for around at least $300/kg. I'm sure that leaves a little wiggle room for price negotiation

For example, it takes almost 2kg of grapes to make 450grams of raisins. So 2kg of raisin is way more grapes than 2kg of grapes. It takes 6kg of green vanilla pods to produce 1kg of cured vanilla beans. People are paying for not only the green raw pods but also the curing process, and as you said, the storing, shipping, insurance, tariff, tax, etc.

That's the raw beans. Like cocoa and coffee, there's a significant amount of work needed to process vanilla. Even worse, if you failed the aroma and flavor could be lost. The processing of the beans is the part that needs the big budget. That's why synthetic ones are used widely, they don't need to fangle with a volatile compound from a bean that doesn't really want to live
