Paul Schaffer, déporté de France au camp d’Auschwitz-Birkenau

Paul Schaffer a été déporté à l’âge 20 ans par le convoi 28 parti le 4 septembre 1944 du camp de Drancy à destination du camp d’Auschwitz-Birkenau. Il est déporté avec sa mère, Sali, et sa sœur Anna. Paul est débarqué à Kosel avec d’autres hommes du convoi en capacités de travailler. Il est affecté aux camps de travaux de Tarnowitz puis de Sosnowice. Il travaille à la réparation de chemin de fer et à la construction de ponts. En novembre 1943, Paul est transféré au camp d’Auschwitz-Birkenau. Il est par la suite déplacé au camp de travail de Bobrek. En janvier 1945, Paul est évacué par une marche de la mort qui l’emmène à Gleiwitz où il est parqué dans un wagon à destination de l’Allemagne. Il réussit à s’évader et à rejoindre Cracovie. Paul est rapatrié en France le 15 avril 1945. Il découvre la mort de ses parents et de sa sœur. Paul Schaffer rédige ses mémoires qu’il publie sous le titre « Le Soleil voilé » (éd. Saint-Denis/Société des Ecrivains, 2003).

Paul Schaffer was deported at the age of 20 by convoy 28, which left the Drancy camp on September 4, 1944, bound for the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. He was deported with his mother, Sali, and his sister Anna. Paul is disembarked at Kosel with other men in the convoy who are able to work. He was assigned to the Tarnowitz and Sosnowice labor camps. He worked on railroad repairs and bridges construction. In November 1943, Paul was transferred to the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. He was later moved to the Bobrek labor camp. In January 1945, Paul is evacuated in a death march to Gleiwitz, where he was parked in a train car bound for Germany. He managed to escape and reach Krakow. Paul was repatriated to France on April 15, 1945. He discovers that his parents and sister have died. Paul Schaffer writes his memoirs, which he publishes under the title “Le Soleil voilé” (ed. Saint-Denis/Société des Ecrivains, 2003).
