Star Wars Grandfather Clock Chime (May The Fourth Be With You 2021)

- I made a replacement chime barrel for my grandfather clock. The barrel is 3D printed, with a laser-cut gear and a 2.2mm axle.
I wrote a tool in Java to take a MIDI file and generate the barrel geometry. The same program generates a Fisher Price record (see • Star Wars / Force Awak... for that).
As you can hear, the clock really struggles to produce the melody. I think this is mainly because the melody has eighth notes and triplets whereas the traditional chimes are quarter notes, but the shape of the 3D-printed teeth may have something to do with it. Hope you enjoy!
1:16 that’s so cool
It would also be cool to make a 3D-printed chime barrel that causes the clock to play the Home Sweet Home chime/melody!
If youre wanting it to play more smooth, the governor fan needs a small weight on each side. That gives it more strength to pick up more hammers at one time.
My Hasbro interactive R2D2 plays this with the right commands ("Do you remember", "Anakin?" and "Do you remember", "Darth Vader?" in any order).
Did you put the original chime back in
It's still the Star Wars chime. Putting the original back in would somehow feel like a step backwards...
@@jonfriesen2478 umm… no… it wouldn’t.. winchester chimes on the original barrel are pretty rare… not to mention durability in general..
very cool experiment though.
@@noahbones1221 i agree
What did It play 3 times?
The barrel has room for three 16-second chimes. To play the whole 48 second song I had to let a chime play, then select a new chime, set my clock back to midnight to play the next chime, select a new chime, and set my clock back to midnight to play the final chime. I edited the video to make the transitions smooth(ish). The switches are made at 00:29 and 00:46.
