I feel a need to correct this: I did not make the F-Zero X + Expansion Kit in one ROM port; Zoinkity did. He also made the english version of Expansion Kit on the cart version, which I took the time to port back to a disk format and then made a few changes on the english translation of my own, but the main credit is to Zoinkity. I never did anything on the process of porting to a cartridge format.
Fun Fact: the Nintendo 64 emulation is based on the Wii U Virtual Console one, which has unfinished 64DD emulation code that was actually kept on Switch as is (so still unfinished) until a few months ago, where it was completely removed.

My mistake on the credits, but I made sure to pin thr comment here so people know, as well as quote your Twitter post so people can see.
And damn I had no idea about the unfinished DD code that was left over. Still a damn shame nintendo hasn't ported the DD features over. Really boils my blood.

These emulated ports are the perfect opportunity to always give the definitive experience. They did this with the GBA SMB3 on Wii U where they included the eReader stages so I would expect expansions to always be included in these re-released

Nintendo usually tries its absolute best only when they have no other option -- like when the Wii U was giving them a loss. You could also add on that Iwata's direction gave them benefit of an artist in the director's seat. With the Switch as successful as it is, they don't even need to try anymore, even if the devs themselves desperately want to.

But I was correct on Online. It’s actually a very competitive method compared to doing it on Project64 or other open source emulators. Though it does make me wish online N64 multiplayer would improve across the board.

If Nintendo never bothered about Mario Kart 64 on Wii and Wii U's Virtual Console and Switch don't having the Memory Pak support to save the ghosts, add 64DD support over a N64 emulator or doing their own ROMHack is asking too much.
In a perfect world, F-Zero X could be perfectly ported to the Switch to keep 60fps, increasing draw distance, offer widescreen, offer local multiplayer with splitscreen and online with one single screen per system/player, and add the Expansion Kit content. But as Nintendo don't do it, let's wait for some hero to reverse engineering the game, like as they did with SM64 and Ocarina of Time.

it's easy to see from this footage that the fine range of movement from actual physical thumb input to on screen movement of the ship is very jittery as if you were simply jerking the stick in tap tap fashion? are you aware that you're using an analogue or is this just another case of Nintendo stuffing up the subtle control movement as they did witth the VC versions on Wii and WiiU? It's the reason I gave up trying to be any good on these versions because I simply could not replicate my skill level from an actual N64. Playing Master mode on F-zero Wii and WiiU was a joke and I'm guessing it is here also

I don''t know, this video seems to try to find negatives, which are non-issues to begin with or take just very short time to adapt (button layout, no layout change necessary at all here). Also I have no real issue with input lag with my Pro Controller. Total control of the car. In my experience the 8BitDo controller (I have one) has shown definitely more input-lag than my Pro -pontroller when playing Mario Maker, maybe that is part of your issue?.
Also, the "Smoothing filter" in this case has nothing to do with the smoother rendering of D Graphics/Polygons with gouraud shading and anti-aliasing. Just increasing the resolution would create better aka smoother visuals.
The framerate might be slightly more unstable in this version, but really, that will never be a reason why you failed in this game. ... also but how can you identify framerate "dips" (aka fewer frames/second ) in the footage you showed, where you bump into other cars.?
The biggest factor by far for difficulties in this game is insufficient training in how to use your left thumb precisely enough to steer your car smoothly.
But yeah DD stuff would have been nice. But it"s an amazing game as it was ... and still is on NSO, because the gameplay and track design are the best of any high speed racer. Don't let this video convince you otherwise if you had doubts. It"s a fun and challenging racer

This video is to address the quality of the port not the game itself. Reason I'm so critical is because I want the best for F-Zero X as it's one of my favorite frsnchises and bought both a DD and the Expansion kit years ago.
I stated the 8BitDo is specifically used on my 64, NOT my Switch. I'm using a Pro Controller depicted on the video and have cramps regardless. I still stand by what stated. It's a terrible port. Fantastic game.

Just want to say at the beginning: Your video was a quality video in general and the effort to make it was noticeable. (So I give it a thumbs up, now ... also you obviously care about this game and I need more F-Zero X fans to create content)
Alright ... True, it's a barebone port, which might be not enough for many or even most people. So maybe I just have too little expectations. And I also think F-Zero is quite a niche game series by now, that having a proper remake and added features would do this great game (best track design in any racing game ever, incl. GX) more justice and get people more interested about it.
But in terms of controls, which is really important, I just had a different experience. In my case all adjustments regarding controls were really non-issues by the second play-session. I actually waited to buy the online expension pack, because only a well controllable F-Zero X would be worth the price for me. So I was speaking to people like me. :D. After positive impressions from other TH-camrs, I went in and was very relieved playing it.
But yeah, I admit that being comfortable controlling a game is very subjective and if you don't like it, that's just how it is. I have quite small hands, and I often choose to play a game on the switch instead of the PS4 if possible, because I get cramps when using PS4 controller for too long everytime.

@@Kelphelp I see. I have a callus on my thumb from playing f-zero climax to much, which is now making me realize that's probably not the best idea. At least my thumb doesn't hurt anymore, which can be a bright side to rolling your finger while ruining it in the process. I could probably imagine why you wouldn't want to roll your finger with getting calluses and all, so ignore my first comment.
Sorry for my long winded stupidity.

How does the DD work ? Does it somehow add content to your games ? Or were the games for DD fully new games on the floppy discs you had to buy ? Like did F zero get re released on the disc as the DD version with new stuff ?

    • @Kelphelp
      @Kelphelp  ปีที่แล้ว

Both actually. Like thr name says the Expansion Kit adds additional content exclusively on this version. It's the only way to play this. Almost all DD content and games are exclusive to the console so its Def rare in that regard

The Switch version is absolute trash. The controls are too sensitive on any controller. It makes it too hard to turn without losing grip. Playing with slider settings is almost impossible. There are tremendous framerate issues especially on the X Cup, it is almost unplayable! The worst part is people on social media saying Nintendo did a great job, when they have no idea how the actual game is supposed to feel/play on a real N64.
