    Very grateful for the part around 22:34. The ability to turn off processing via chain selector is a game changer, and I never would have figured out the trick without this video. Thank you!

    I didn't know you could group instruments like that and cycle through them so seamlessly. And the tip for automatically turning off the instruments when not in use is simply genius, and for someone like myself struggling with CPU on a low end macbook, it's immensely helpful! Thank you!

    • @AndriSoren

      Joao Letelier that’s super cool to hear! For years I’ve also been trying to squeeze out the most I can out of my MacBook. I can also recommend (heartily) upgrading the main hard drive to an SSD (I even removed my DVD drive to add a second one later). This was an absolutely crazy improvement - but obviously only for macs from certain years.
      Thanks for letting me know it was helpful - really makes it worth making these videos!
      P.s. the (currently) free arrangement course might also interest you, in case you didn’t see it! WRKSHP.eu is the link 😌

  • @rulerinpeace
    @rulerinpeace 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Feedback is always nice when you produce content so I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for sharing this content. It was very well done, professional. The only thing you left out is that you have to create an Options.txt file in the preference folder of Ableton with the following, including dash for the item to appear in the menu.
    -EnableMapToSiblings=1
    I had to Google why I could not find the Map To Siblings in my menu for I mistakenly thought maybe it was Copy Values to Siblings for it was the only item I had in my menu with the term Siblings but after about 45 minutes of trial and error I got the correct information and it worked like a Charm.
    I came across your tutorial trying to run different instruments out of the same VST, such as a Kontakt Instrument but using a different sound from the same Instrument or using Serum and having a certain sequence of sounds that I want to layer, playing the exact same sequence of notes but different sounds out of the same VST, layering them and building, so when song starts maybe only one instance of a sound, but after so many bars another instance of the same sequence of notes from the VST with a different additional sound playing same midi notes, adding as many sounds as I want to really layer the sounds playing that sequence of notes and I want to do this without too many tracks. I want the instances to appear in the clip section, layering the sequence clip after clip in the same track.
    Still not sure how to achieve this but loved what I did learn from your tutorial and want to express my gratitude.

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eric thank you so much for your warm words and taking the time to leave your detailed feedback. Indeed I forgot to include the options.txt part as (shame on me) I set it so very long ago that I had taken it for granted. The problem with TH-cam videos is that it's not possible to edit them or update them very easily or clearly - which is what I do with the videos and content in my school WRKSHP.eu but I'll take this learning forward, as well as your kind encouragement.
      I struggled slightly to follow your explanation of the problem (which isn't a criticism, it's very hard to verbalise a lot of these things) - but there might be 2/3 angles to look at:
      1) using internal MIDI channel settings of Kontakt to have different instruments respond to different channels.
      2) seeing if the programme change messages in clips can be of any use in this context (they are powerful and often forgotten)
      3) using an instrument rack's other options such as velocity and key-range settings, as well as the chain selector. They are much more powerful than people think.
      4) for truly complex routings, you can use internal MIDI routing such as MIDI Pipe or on Mac the built in IAC driver.
      5) drum racks are also a powerful place for triggering various things from one track (in combination with 4) or by bringing in multiple instrument racks to a drum rack.
      Hope some of that might inspire a solution or a way forward, and thanks again Eric

      Hey so I know this is 6 months out, but if you still need an answer, or if anyone else is trying to do the same thing, I'm going to take a stab at solving this for you!
      So, from my understanding, you have a sequence of notes (melody, ARP, etc.) that, in the beginning of the song, is played by one instrument/instance of a VST. By the end of the song, it's played by multiple instruments/instances of the same or various VST(s). instead of having, say, 5 different tracks, for workflow purposes or organization purposes, you would like to have all these instances play on the same track and be triggered by different clips. So for example, one clip contains the sequence of notes with 1 instrument/instance, one clip contains the sequence of notes with 2 instruments/instances, etc. If this sounds like what you're trying to do, I have an answer for you!
      Step 1 - Create an instrument rack and put all instances/instruments on the rack
      Step 2- Open the chain section of the rack.
      Step 3- Instrument 1 (the first instrument to play the sequence), set the zone as 10-50. Instrument 2, the second instrument added to your sequence of notes, set the zone as 20-50. Instrument 3, 30-50; Instrument 4, 40-50; Instrument 5, 50. These numbers are arbitrary, I just used intervals of 10 so you can actually "see" the zones.
      Step 4 - Add in as many clips as you have instruments on the rack
      Step 5 - On clip 1, under the envelope section, select Instrument Rack and then underneath it, Chain Selector.
      Step 6 - Add in a value of "10" across the clip for clip 1. For clip 2, add in a value of 20. For clip 3, add in a value of 30, etc.
      That's it!
      So now, when you trigger clip 1, it will be playing only the first instrument off your instrument rack. When you trigger clip 2, it will be playing both instruments 1&2; clip 3 plays instruments 1,2,&3, etc. Then just add in the notes you want these instruments to play and you're all set. Hope this helps!!

    Hi Andri, thanks so much for the device on/off hint, that saved me a lot of effort. I am currently creating an external Intrument selector rack where I can select all of my external gear (synth and drum computers). I also make use of the snapshot view to store each device as snapshot to be able to select via the name I gave the snapshot and each snapshot has the corresponding chain to the instrumet selected. Works well so far but I got some issues that the audio was audible in one channel from multiple synth also if only one chain for the specific synth was selected (maybe the range was to low? First synth 0-0, second synth 1-1, third synth 2 -2 ....). So with the device on/off mapping I think it should work as expected. I will check this out today. Many thanks for that!

    Great video. A lot of awesome info explained very well. One thing you could add to your videos if you haven’t started already, and that’s examples of situations that you’d use a setup just like this. I’m not really seeing why you would go to all this extent to do this when I believe there’s other ways to have those 3 instruments open to play. But, I’m somewhat new to this. Having to reach for the mouse to get to that one dial to switch instruments only to go too far and accidentally select the one you don’t want. Seems kind of finicky. But, that’s what these vids are all about. Learning Ableton. Thanks again, How to…well explained.

    Excellent tutorial. Gave me a better understanding of how to create an Instrument rack. Easy to understand. Do you have tutorials creating instrument racks for those instruments that already have chains created for example a "Organ Chimes and Dimes" to combine with other keyboard or organ instruments. Thanks

    Great vid. Not something I would ever have discovered from the manual. Thanks so much. One note: The Map to Siblings feature is apparently not included w/ A10 Lite but rather Apply Setting to Siblings. Far as I can tell us Lite users must still do our mappings manually one Device at a time.

    This is great, you can also automate the chain selector too so when u change song your instrument sound is set up automatically.
    One thing is I can't figure out is u can't automate macro variations. So if u messe with all the dials and mess up the sound , I'm trying to find a way to get back to a default sound without manually clicking the macro variation.

I looked at your video and now I have to look again in order to further understand how to control that from Akai MPc 40 or Push. Any suggestion?... Or just the macro ?. If switching through instruments and presets is your thing, Cantabile is worth looking at. It is much deeper and more customisable than Ableton for this sort of thing, and you get text feedback of which instrument / preset you have selected rather than just a chain select number. Unfortunately there is no sequencer, so it's really more oriented towards live sets and jamming.

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah! Does it integrate with Push well? By that I mean the text feedback appears on Push’s screen somehow? Did a quick google but didn’t come up with much.

    • @cs7160
      @cs7160 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndriSoren not as far as I'm aware, unless you are very proficient at hacking your Live! You can get Cantabile to switch presets / instruments via CC and then send back the names of preset and instruments via sysex. Then you program a midi controller yourself (Arduino Leo with some encoders and a display) to interface with Cantabile. If you want to integrate Ableton, you would have to route midi from Ableton to Cantabile. If your soundcard allows it, you can also route audio from cantabile back to Ableton to complete the loop, now you essentially have Cantabile as an external instrument which is totally controlled via the Arduino. I did all this over winter (the things lockdown will do to you...). Not even sure if it was worth in the end, time will tell if I keep this current setup!
