EDIT 16/08/24. Well... they've gone ahead and changed the whole lore (sighs in pain). However... I was still right? they said "Earth is in peril" which is what i was suggesting in this video, so (as far as what we know so far) My points still stand.

The sphere is definitely lying to the player. It's like the mesmer in Subnautica, which makes the player hallucinate the voice of the PDA saying "come closer".

Why do you expect that wierd luring alien artifacts will tell you truth?
because... that's the whole point of speculation? There's no right or wrong answer. That's like me saying to you 'Why do you think it's lying?'. I'm just saying what's in the game, It's up to you to choose to believe it or not 😄

I don't believe the artifacts to be telling the truth. For one thing, how would they know about what is happening on Earth? They're able to mentally communicate with any living being that comes near them and tells them whatever it believes will make them pick the artifact up. You usually find wild animals around the artifacts, so it's plausible to say that they can communicate with the animals too, drawing them in.
I'm hoping the dialog the artifacts say is actually only placeholder dialog and that when 1.0 comes out they will have story relevant messages to draw you in.
If I am not mistaken. The crashes are the delivery ships that go to and from the HUB. Not drop pods.
While this is an interesting possibility, I always inherently assumed that it was something about the artifact itself that somehow warped and/or controlled the AI that gives you quests. It's the artifact that wants to be collected. It's using the AI to encourage you to do so, by using it's database of knowledge of the english language and context about your beginnings (earth, ficsit, etc). It's also the only way to communicate to you.
I took it that way because I first found an artifact without physially seeing it on my screen. I was in a cave, and it was high up on a ledge. I was walking backwards, so it definitely couldn't have been anywhere in my viewport, yet it took control of the AI. It never appeared to be a transmission, especially with the audio for the AI being extremely distorted at the time of the messages, and the way that the messages were being conveyed.
