I followed your method last summer and grew Ginger for the 1st time. I grew 2 plants each in two wicking tubs I made from 25-gallon cattle mineral tubs. The plants were huge! My total harvest from these wicking tubs was 8 lbs. from store bought ginger. I dehydrated and powdered the Ginger down to a full pint jar of pure ginger spice. I also had a 3x12' raised bed going at the same time, however, I never harvested that ginger. It has been in place through this past winter, under a thick layer of shredded leaves. It got pretty moist under the leaves and I don't know if the ginger has rotted. But, I intend on uncovering the leaf mulch today! Thank you for all your tutorials, Rob. They are Priceless!
Thanks for the great videos. You always do such a great job of going back and forth with the metric and "standard" measurements. Nice harvest. Grew my first ginger last year getting ready to plant again. Cheers from Florida
Hi Rob, Nice haul, you always seem to have good harvests of ginger. Me and my daughter grow ours pretty much the same way but we use 7gallon bags. Cant wait to see how the out come this year. Could you do vegepod show again? We love ours, right now its inside under lights waiting to be set outside. Best regards, Jarrod
Hey Jarrod. I will once I set it up again mate. 👍 I was playing with the idea of incorporating it into the aquaponics..... 🤔🤔 Cheers mate & all the best.
Love your videos as always, so informative and inspirational. Thank you! I have some lemongrass that I grew on accident (ends thrown in compost sprouted and gave me a bunch of grass I can harvest whenever needed) but now I want to grow ginger as well. Happy gardening!
Thx! I like the fact that you can make a paste of sorts and freeze it. I freeze mine whole but would like to try making a paste. I mainly make tea with tumeric and lemon peel so I think that's a grand idea/use of the paste. 🤗👏
Nice one Barbara. We turn the turmeric into paste as well. Much faster to do a lot in one hit so we can have small bits ready to go for curries & stews.
Thank You for the video(s) I just started to grow my own ginger, and your video(s) have helped me out tremendously. Once again I really appreciate you and your content.
We just harvested a ton, but even here in So California we are way too cold and wet, so for now storing them out of the elements, but hope to get them re-planted within the next month. I personally use smaller containers it’s easier for me to handle. Great video! Thanks ❤
I think I prefer to grow them in containers as well now Robbie & Gary. I think the 25gal tubs are about as large as I'd go now. Hope this seasons crop is a top one for you folks.
We’ve been watching you for a long time and it is amazing the amount of ginger you grow, and how beautiful it looks. Thanks for all the videos you do.❤️
Glad you mentioned starting indoors and transplanting later. I just started 5 pieces indoors this past week. I have GOT to make myself plant bigger pieces, though. I'm pretty stingy on my planting pieces 😊. I think that would help my harvest.
Had my indoor (bathroom, so nice and warm) ginger die back very early (6 months?). I just removed the leaves and it grew back. Tried to have a peak in the soil, but only saw those pink baby-rhizomes. Harvested one of them, but had almost no ginger-flavour at all. Is that your experience (with those pink babies) or were they just too young? (or too little nutrients?)
You could plant them out from now on I think. It would help to pop them in a north facing position so they get the most sun they can while things are still heating up. 👍 These bags where 35-40 L. Happy growing.
I usually use chicken manure for fertilizer.. My plants are really green and healthy, I can't wait for the harvest but i've only planted 1 piece of ginger.😆😆😁😁
Nice one Katherine. I prefer to use fish waste & grow most p-lants in aquaponics. 👍 In saying that, I do miss not having the "girls" follow me around the yard as I work.
When you process, freeze, & cube, just throw in a stir fry? Also, was that vodka I seen you macerate in? For vodka or vodka infused ginger? Sorry for so many questions. Good day
Hey Matthew. I normally pull the ginger out of the freezer as I'm prepping so it thaws out. You can also shave it thinly with a knife to aid it in defrosting faster. I have stored in the vodka a few times. Makes for a very tasty drink after all the ginger is used. 😉🍸 Hope that helps mate & have a fantastic one.
Great video mate. Quick question. I’m in SEQ and some ginger started throwing shoots. So I’ve planted it. Will it matter being this time of year? Cheers
It may grow a little but will die back once winter sets in. If it's in a pot, just keep chasing the sun with it as long as you can & that should help it put on a bit of rhizome. I'd let it over winter if it doesn't grow much so it can get a head start on next growing season. I have spoken to a lady that lived on the coast up Noosa way that kept some of hers green all through winter in a greenhouse. It didn't die back 100% but also didn't put on any extra rhizome either apparently. Hope that helps some Drewby.
Do you mean these pots? I move them around so they can get the most of the sun every day.👍 If you mean the aquaponics, an electric blanket may be a bit expensive to run if the outside wasn't insulated. Adding insulation may add considerable extra cost. I'd also make sure you had a thermostat running it or you may end up with a very large bowl of fish soup.
@@RobsAquaponics We had a cold snap her in Florida a few weeks ago, we hit 29F at night and only in the forties during the day, for about a week,, killed all my fish in the IBC,. @@davidfrank3728 I use 2 x 500w aquarium heaters in mine just to keep the water at the level the fish are happy at but not feeding. Probably not as efficient as a wrap around the tank but as we don't get that cold here 🤞 through winter it's all we need.

Nice one Samuel. Lemongrass & ginger is one flavour pairing that I really enjoy. Add a bit of galangal & soda water & it makes for a very tasty drink.

Wow, another nice ginger harvest, Rob. I bought some last season to grow, but instead, I ate them. Next spring, I will try it again LOL

They can have a very mild favour I've found LYL. That's why I prefer the older spicier rhizome. 👍
@@RobsAquaponics Thanks. Yes, there were a bit... under-welming. Hoping to get proper rhyzomes in a "few" months :)

Great harvest, what size grow bags did you use? I live in the south when is best time to plant, spring or fall, can they take the winter temps?
