  • Growing Ginger In Containers in Zone 5 Wisconsin! - and it's DAY 14 of our 31 Days of Giving
Our 14th gardening giveaway video focuses on our experiment with planting ginger in containers indoors.
We have wanted to grow organic ginger for a long time, but as it is a tropical plant, we can't grow it outdoors for the entire 8-10 months it would need in order to grow to full maturity. So, we have taken some of our storebought organic ginger that sprouted, and we are planting it indoors.
We bought this ginger a few weeks ago, and we left it in its packaging and now it is healthy and sprouting ginger that already has the beginnings of roots, so we are taking this opportunity to create ginger seedlings that we can then transplant if they are successful.
This is another exciting garden experiment for us, and we can't wait to share and watch the results as they move forward.
We hope you enjoy this video!

    Congratulations to the winner!!
I experimented with ginger this past year from store bought ginger. I broke 1 hand-sized piece of ginger into 5 pieces roughly the size of a golf ball each, and put them into a ziploc bag with a moist paper towel. After they began to sprout, I planted each of them into a 3 gal nursery pot in a potting mix of compost, perlite, and some organic fertilizer. After our last frost, I set the pots out in the back yard and let nature do its thing. I watered them some during the hot and dry summer months, but otherwise took a "set it and forget it" approach until after the frost came this fall. In each pot, I harvested about 3-4x the size of piece of seed ginger, so all in all not a bad return! For 2023, I want to try larger containers (maybe 10gal grow bags) and fertilize/water with more intentionality. One of my neighbors is Chinese, and the other is Indian, and I would love to bless them with fresh ginger!

This is a fantastic comment with lots of helpful details for us. Thank you for sharing. I think that it will be interesting to see how the ginger performs outside vs how it starts inside. I would love to see a good return on investment. We will keep a close eye on it and see how it starts out. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Congratulations to the winner! A great prize. grew ginger this past season in SE Wisconsin zone 5. I started some organic ginger indoors and then moved outside (in a pot) late May. It produced very well and I plan to grow again but start earlier (mid to end of Jan) The plants I had in dappled shade mostly protected from the hot afternoon sun did tremendously better than the ones I had in mostly sun with no protection.

    • @GutenGardening

Congrats to the winner. I'm lucky enough to be in a growing zone where I can plant and keep ginger outdoors. This was my first year growing both ginger and turmeric. Both did really well and I'm excited to plant them both again. It does take forever for them to take off. When I first planted mine, I thought for sure I'd done something wrong and they weren't going to do anything. I'd about given up when I suddenly had shoots sticking out of the ground. They are definitely a long term crop but I think they were well worth the effort. Good luck. Have patience!

We received a gift certificate to our local Coop. The shopping list includes organic ginger, organic turmeric, and as many whole chickens as the gift provides. Yup, I'm starting ginger and turmeric in a 2x4 tent along with herbs (lighting provided by MIGROW ARAY lights (no sponsor, I just, seriously, love what they do based on a cost comparison to other lights!)). Nonetheless, the herbs are in 5-gallon fabric planters; the ginger and turmeric will go in 10-gallon planters. All of these will move outside next spring. Next fall I'll gather all I can, Z5 southern VT, amend with worm castings, implement an IPM protocol, and start the process again.
A word of caution! If you try to do indoor/outdoor/indoor you will bring bugs/pests/creepy-crawlies in your house!!! The best defense is a pre-determined IMP (Integrated Pest Management) strategy, which involves inoculations of beneficial "stuff", such as soil microbes, organic sprays for foliar applications, and such. Think JADAM or KNF, because a pest infestation will cause many frustrations... ask me how I know!

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you so much for the detailed information. We will definitely do a indoor to outdoor but not back to indoor for these. We have some pretty bad experiences with pests as well, so we would like to avoide that if we can. We will have to look into the MIGROW ARAY lights as a possible future option. Thank you again for sharing!

This will be my first year growing ginger. Do you have any advice for a Z5 climate with lots of potential to start/finish most anything indoors? Basically, how would you move ginger grown indoors during winter to outdoors during a very short growing season.
I have a micro-climate problem at my house; it can be hotter, or colder than my zone predicts, or that others experience in my area. Guessing you'll write 10-months, and that's perfect!

I've never thought of growing ginger in containers. Since I want to plant everything under the sun, I'll definitely plant some in containers. I miss Jamaica for stuff like this.
Guten Gardening were you affected much by the super freeze we just had? All my onion seedlings that I planted in tires died. Last year I planted them in November and had a fantastic harvest. I'm pleasantly surprised that my Marjoram, Thyme and Parsley are still hanging tough in my little greenhouse that I swaddled many times over with plastic and included grow lights.
I pray the blessings of Yeshua upon you and your family for 2023 and continually. You are a sower and a scatterer and the word says, give and it will be given unto you, good measure, pressed down and shaken together shall men bring unto your bossom. With whatever measure you mete, it will be measured unto you. You go on then and possess your blessings. Shalom

It is definitely worth the try. As to the deep freeze, we only have some collard greens and a little kale outside, so fortunately none of the rest of our vegetables were affected. I think it got down to a about -10F here and more with the wind chill. :(

@@GutenGardening Good, i put it out side during the summer and then in a pot before it got really cold. it wasnt too happy about that and had some die off, but now its grown quite a few new shoots and is happy again. i think ill try to keep the bulk of it in pots, but maybe do some in the ground to get lots of new growth in summer; just to experiment.

I tried growing ginger in a pot last year and it never even came up, just rotted in the pot...it had no sprouts on it when I planted it. Maybe if I left it outside the fridge it would have sprouted, but you'd think it would have sprouted in the summer outside. Probably won't even try it again.

I started growing shampoo ginger last summer. It didn't flower. I'm hoping it will flower this year since it should be established now.
I recently bought some ginger from the store that was spouting and I have that in my kitchen, hoping it'll grow.

I wish you good luck with your ginger growing efforts. It certainly is an interesting looking plant. I don't use fresh ginger much in cooking, other than baking, because I do not enjoy the sharp pungency. Each to his own! Lots of folks don't like cilantro, and I absolutely love it.
