      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms 🍅 She sends good morning greetings. She chose the other path of painting pottery to support the family while we grew up living in the city where i was born and raised. I think of how much $ she could have saved if she also dry farmed corn, beans, and squash while taking care of us kids. Lol. Plus apartment living had very little space until we moved into a house. Before my brother was diagnosed. She was proud to see him take up gardening with his son. Today, she is helping, along with my nephew, with our little startup garden and enjoys it. I call her my feisty survivor for at 77 years young, she still has the energy of herself at 35. Alan, what's up man! Ginger is tropical..so it has to be grown NOW for us. I try to sprout it in March to pot up in May, to then plant in June in its permanent spot. These guys however were accelerated sprouted in May and now just being potted up. It needs 2-3 months to get the best and biggest root growth, and as you know, by October that'll be impossible with our fall weather.

    Hey! love your video on this! i have pretty much the same DYI soil mixture that you use, so as it pertains to growing in containers, at what point and when in the ginger plants life cycle do they need soluble fertilizer? and do they need to be top dressed again with an insoluble fertilizer? I've read online that it needs different levels of N, P, & K at different times in its life cycle but i cant find 1. what are the life cycle stages and timing if them 2. specifics as to what nutrients/ ratios and at what life cycle it needs it. ...I only know that it should be a balanced NPK (by whatever pre-made fertilizer or DYI components) when it's ready to be potted and toward the end of gingers life cycle, it needs less N so it can focus on roots, not leaves (which makes sense). But everything in the middle im very confused about and ive spent hours trying to research this. i would REALLLY be SOOO grateful if you could advise me on NPK/nutrients/soluble/insoluble/lifecycle stages/when to add more compost, and anything else im missing between potting and harvesting. Side note: i do not have manure or a compost bin. I buy compost all the time so thats no problem (let me know if there is one you recommend if it matters?) but if you were going to suggest manure- what could i do for an alternative? - i know this is a loaded question lol but i cannot find answers on any of this stuff anywhere and im at the point were i REALLY need to know so Im really hoping that you or someone else with as much success & experience can help me 🙏

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, right on, it really is a great mix! For me, when I plant in a bed like this, I don't fertilize. My soils are amended with compost every year and the need for additional inputs is very low. If this was a pot, you could definitely do a liquid organic solution or even a seaweed extract mid growth cycle (2-3 months) to ensure the plants have enough juice to produce the biggest rhizomes....I also make this DIY fertilizer from weeds every year...it would work great if you wanted that extra boost!: th-cam.com/video/Lkc-bcgvr3U/w-d-xo.html

    You can regrow store bought ginger and turmeric. Just make sure its organic so there is no growth/root inhibitors on them. But soaking them over night can help you chances if they have been treated. The ginger has long slender leaves. The turmeric is wide leafed. Easy to tell which is which in the same container. Mine are year 2... wintered over in a dry protected area on my patio. I may see blooms this year on the plants, all have re-sprouted. Cant wait.
