      People pronounce everything in their own way, there is no ONE correct way to pronounce anything. Like Bruce said, it depends on where you are from, your accent and so forth; I think that as long as you are understood then who cares if someone pronounces a word a bit differently.

    I use Amsoil Saber mixed at 85:1 for all my 2-stroke equipment including my Lawn Boy lawnmower that per the manual required 32:1. 1 mix for everything regardless of the manufacturers requirements. No issues or hassles.

    I have a two stroke chainsaw and a two stroke weedeater. I do not weedeat every time i mow, so my 50:1 needs are irregular. Because the tanks on both are about 500 ml, I use a medicine cup like you do Bruce. I take a 1/2 liter empty water bottle, measure 10ml oil in the medicine cup, add that to the empty water bottle and fill the water bottle with gas, and put the lid on and shake. Once mixed, I immediately fill the empty weedeater or chainsaw. My needs are sporadic, so this eliminates the need for a separate two stroke gascan and eliminates risk of someone grabing the wrong can or getting stale fuel. It works for me.

    Many years ago I had the opportunity to discuss the oil mixture question with a engineer from OMC. (who made the 2-cycle engines for LawnBoy) He told me that the amount of oil needed in the gas is determined by the design of the engine and it's components like needle bearings, piston rings, and metallurgy of the jug/cylinder wall. He stated that an engine designed to run on 16:1 fuel mix will always need a 16:1 mix regardless of the 2-cycle oil you use. He stated that the oil labeled as 50:1 is simply stating that this particular oil is capable of being diluted to a 50:1 mix and will be able to provide sufficient lubrication for an engine designed to run on an fuel/oil mix of 50:1. You can not take an old 32:1 oil and mix it to 50:1 and expect it to provide the correct amount of lubrication for a engine capable of running on a 50:1 mix.
    So, the "50:1" labeled 2-cycle oil is just an indicator of the quality of the oil and to what extent it can be diluted and still provide sufficient lubrication. It in no way is telling you that your old engine, which needs a 16:1 mix, will suddenly and magically change it's designed stripes/specs and run well on oil mixed at 50:1. If you have an old engine that requires a 16:1 oil mix, you still need to mix it's fuel at 16:1 regardless of using an oil labeled at "50:1".

      Thanks, it's that technical writing class I had back in college. ;^)
      I have been reading some of the other comments here and find them interesting. (your favorite word) I happen to be an American that wishes we would change to the metric system. I remember, as a young child in the 60's, getting several "Weekly Reader" magazines (small 4-page news print publications) at school that talked about the pending conversion of the U.S. to the metric system, but, sadly, it never happened. I suppose it's a testament to the strong will (or obstinance) of us good ol' Americans.
      For the amusement of all those non-Americans around the world, I present a primer on the old "English measure" system. (I blame England for it :-) Just don't ask me how the English arrived at a "gallon" for a unit of measure. :-( It may have had something to do with the making of those old wooden barrels they originally stored fluids in a few centuries back.
      1-cup = 8oz. (minimum amount of a morning coffee)
      1-pint = 2-cups (16oz) (a good "sip" of beer)
      1-quart = 2-pints (32oz) (a "quarter" of a gallon)
      1-gallon = 4-quarts (128oz)
      For fuel/oil mixing, convert everything to ounces (oz) and then divide your total number of fuel ounces by the the ratio you want. If you have 2 gallons of gas (256oz) and want a 40:1 mix, simply divide 256 by 40 and you'll get 6.4. So simply add 6.4 ounces of 2-cycle oil to your 2 gallons of gas and you're all set. Five gallons of gas would require 16oz of oil for a 40:1 mix. (640/40=16) Five Gallons of gas would require 40oz of oil for a 16:1 mix. (640/16=40) Isn't math grand?! ;^D
      Personally I use this stuff frequently as I have some yard power tools, like a chain saw, that I use very infrequently and I don't want to mix a lot of fuel for them and have what's left over sit for months and go bad. So I mix up only a quart of fuel at a time. As it needs a 40:1 mix this means that I need to add only ".8" ounces of oil to my 32 ounce quart of fuel. So the problem became finding "containers" and "measures" that made this easily possible.
      I found a "measuring" glass made by "Anchor" at a local grocery store that had the glass marked in ounces, teaspoons, tablespoons and milliliters which held a little over 150ml of fluid. More or less a very overly large shot glass with a lot of markings on the outside. For the "mixing" bottle I like using a clear 32oz Gatorade or Powerade bottle, though I have used others. But what ever I use I pick a bottle that has a cap that reseals well and has a larger opening at the top than something like a soda bottle, as it makes pouring fluids into them easier. Just make sure that after rinsing the bottle you let all the left over water evaporate fully before adding any fuel to it! Be sure to use a black permanent marker to label the cap and bottle with the ratio of the mix it contains.
      Happy mixing to all.

    You are right, we have to be scientific in our measurements of the ingredients to make two cycle gas. The days are over when you could fill a coke bottle with automotive oil and pour it in a gallon of gas for a 16 :1 mix. Now, I have a graduated glass in the shop to make my two cycle gas. It measures ounces, ml, TBS and even tsp.

    Canada wasn't always entirely metric! We used to vacation in Ontario in the 60's, and it took a little extra caution preparing our premix for the watercraft, since Canadian gallons = five US quarts = 1.25 US gallons. Screw that up and you wind up with inadequate lube for your costly boat motor! In the US, premix typically comes in 3.2 ounce containers. That's because 1 full container yields one gallon of 40:1, or 1.25 gallons of 50:1. I'll take metric any time, thanks.

    Suggest rinse the measure with mixed fuel & add back to can to ensure correct mix ratio. Especially important for smaller quantities as residue film, will be disproportionately higher, than when mixing a larger volume.

      I have never had an issue with any residue in my fuel cans, once I mix them properly, by stirring the oil and gas with a stick for at least 5 mins. before I begin using the mixed fuel. My fuel remains fully mixed right down to the very last drop. Residue... that's a new one for me, unless your just shaking the fuel can to mix the oil, and gas, and that's not the real proper way to mix the fuel for a 2 cycle engine. Make a stir stick, and stir the daylights out of it for 5 mins., getting into every area of the fuel, by tilting the can. I've had fuel sit for a year, and was still able to use that fuel, because it was properly mixed, like it should be mixed.

      @@waynedavies3185, the residue, I was referring to was the film coating the inside of the oneshot measure oil vial. Told that decades ago, the straight mineral oil used, started to separate out after a few days & to shake fuel can before every refill. Reputedly, ambient temperature also affected the rate of this happening.
      Happy for you that you have not had any obvious problems with equipment, yet.

    I'm just a homeowner with the weekend warrior spirit. best thing i did was switched from mixing the fuel myself to purchasing the pre-mixed 92/93 ethanol free gas from Stihl and a few other brands. It may cost more but you can leave it in the engine and dont have to worry about it eating your fuel lines and it has a super long shelf life. Maybe not the best economical deal for heavy users but for the typical homeowner you can't beat the convenience

    Hello from Pennsylvania. Looks like you friends go through a real hassle to mix oil to gas ratio in a fuel container, its easy here. I have a CHART behind my jug of oil and its in columns. Above each column is the different ratio, the first column is 32:1, then 40:1 and etc. To the very left of the first column line by line down is the fuel container size/s. Just point to your size container and slide you finger to the right until you move it to the ratio column you desire, there it will show the measure of oil you need. I use a NEW Synthetic Oil for these fuel mixes. Anyway, dump the specified amount of oil in your container, and top it off at the pump to the amount of the specified container size (its 2 gallons for me). On my oil jug chart; its 4 oz per gallon for 32:1 Ratio, 8 oz for 2 gallon container and etc. Now, I don't really need to look that chart anymore to refill my containers, no calculator, no math, just a measuring cup. Thanks to a simple chart provided by this oil product manufacturer. I enjoy your videos. Old guy signing out.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With metric you don't need a chart. Just take the amount of fuel and divide by 50. 1 liter is 1000 ml divide by 50 and you need 20 ml of oil.
      Just for fun there are only 2 other countries than the U.S. using the old non metric standard. Burma and Liberia in Africa. Crazy eh!!! That is an interesting one to Google

    Bruce, you suggest to use premium gas for small engines. You have the same wrong info on gas that I HAD and probably 99% of the general population has. Octane is the ability to RESIST explosion. The higher the octane, the more the gas will resist explosion. High compression engines need high octane because you don't want the gas to ignite before TDC (top dead center). Small engines typically aren't high compression so you want to use lower octane needed for the low compression. Medium octane like 89 as opposed to 87 is suggested but 87 works fine, too. Just wanted to get that out there. Love your videos!

    • @BrucesShop

      The premium fuel is the only fuel in his area that does not contain alcohol/methanol, that's the only reason he is promoting it's use. And premium/high octane fuel can be used in lower compression engines, its just that there is no benefit or requirement to do so, as there is with higher compression engines.

    I only use "High Test" fuel in all my small engines, whether it be a 2 cycle, or a 4 cycle engine. I never use a lower grade of fuel. Next, I never just shake the can to mix the oil with the gas. I use a stir stick, and put it trough the mouth of the fuel can, and stir the mixture up very well. I may have to tilt the Gerry can slightly to reach the root bottom, but everything get thoroughly stir mixed for at least 5 mins. I then absolutely know for sure, the oil I put into my fuel can, is properly mixed from the very top to the lowest bottom of the can, and it will never separate in the can while sitting waiting for use, right down to the very last drop, before the can is finally empty. More damaged, and ruined engines, are caused by owners just shaking their fuel can for awhile, and thinks the oil is thoroughly, and properly mixed from top to bottom, but the real facts are, "it's not as well mixed as you might think". You can shake the can like crazy, and still not mix the oil with the fuel properly, so stir the fuel with a long stick, and get the ratio of mix correct, right at the beginning. Oil sinks to the bottom in fuel, and some of it will refuse to mix with the gas, no-matter how hard you shake it. That means your fuel is not mixed properly from the top of the can, to the bottom or the can. The top will be leak, lacking the right amount of oil mixture, while the un mixed oil will sit on the bottom of the can, and when you pour it int your fuel tank, the mixture is far too rich with oil. You can notice this if you watch how the fuel burns while you use the fuel completely in the fuel can. Engine will run, but shows not much smoke in exhaust, while engine is running, but once you fill you tank with the fuel at the bottom of your fuel can, you will notice the engine really smokes much greater than it did when the fuel can was full, and so-called freshly mixed. That means your fuel mixture in the fuel can, is wrong, and un-mixed oil is still lying at the bottom of your fuel can, when you pour it into your fuel tank. I have fixed engines for many years, and the main cause of engine wear and damage, is from improper fuel mixtures. In other words, they didn't take the time to stir their fuel, and oil together properly. That means expensive repairs, and shorter lifespan of an engine. Save money, and stir your (oil/gas), fuel with a stick for at least 5 mins., before using it. It will save money in your pocket book, from nasty repairs. People get in too much of a hurry, and don't do it, when they should be doing it. This rule applies to all mixed fueled engines, from weed wackers, to high priced outboard motors that need mixed fuel. Use only High Test fuel in small engines, because it doesn't have ethanol, which harms engine carbs. You want an engine that runs, not one sitting in the repair shop. Take my advise, and you will be thankful you did. Your engine will last a long time, and start right when you need it most of all. I keep telling people, but the refuse to listen, so I say to them, run it the lazy way, and not stir your fuel, cause it gives me a living, and I get all the profits, while you lose in the pocket book.

      I disagree. When I was a youth (and lived where it was very cold) and I mixed fuel for my snowmobile I was advised to put some fuel in the can first. If you put the oil into a cold empty (steal) can first it can freeze (thicken) against the sides which makes it harder to mix with the fuel. If you pour the oil into a partially filled can, the oil never gets a chance to stick to the sides and the action of adding fuel to the can helps mix the fuel and oil. The can should still be given it a good shake though.

    Hi Bruce , nice job. Why premium fuel when most all owners manuals recommend regular unleaded fuel?

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new regular fuel has methanol up to 15 % which dissolves the rubber components in the fuel systems of small engines. Newer autos do not have this problem and are built accordingly.

    • @arciefan
      @arciefan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pumps where I'm at in Arkansas are up to 10% ethanol on all grades, and then there are the E85 pumps which is the 15% you are referring to. As far as advising people to run higher octane fuel than what's in the owners manual, I disagree. And if ethanol free gas was easily available close to me, I would run that too, if I felt they were gouging on the price of it. I've seen it what I consider to be rediculous prices for it so I do not run it. For years now, I have been running my small engines on a regular basis (usually at least a 2 or 3 minute run) every third week or so just to get some fresh fuel (ethanol gas btw)ran thru the carbs. And no problems. I keep a dry erase board on the storage building where I store them and keep up with the start up dates that way. Btw, those that say it gums up carbs, carbs gummed up from neglect ever since I was a kid in 60s. Just my personal opinion though and I respect yours as well.

      Thanks. It is great that you keep track of the gas. That is the key I think. Gas up here in Canada is $1 a liter which is about $4 a gallon for you. We are all getting ripped off.

      @@arciefan I use mainly High Test fuel through all my small engines. Where I live there is no ethanol in that grade of fuel. A couple of years ago, I got a call from my Brother-in-Law, and he was all upset, because he couldn't get his snow blower running, after it started and ran the week before. It refused to start, when being cranked over. I shot a bit of "quick Start in the carb, and it fired right up fast. That meant it had a carb issue. I took the cab apart in front of him, and what he saw was the carb was filled with a gassy gel (ethanol gel), and it plugged up his machine from getting fuel. I brought his cab home, and gave it a real good cleaning in gunk, changed all the inner guts, and put it back together. I mounted tha carb back on his machine, and away it went. I told him to use "HIGH TEST" gas, and that's what he has done since. He has had no other issues with his machine, and uses less fuel as well, so he states. It purs like a kitten, because I now own that machine, and I will use it this winter. Runs like a top for an old blower. I even have an old 1950's Eaton, single stage machine, that runs perfectly as well. It also is ready for use this winter, and it really plows through high drifts.

    A quality synthetic 2 cycle oil like Stihl or Amsoil can overcome the needs of maintaining multiple mixes. Stihl or Amsoil Saber at 50:1 performs at every mix ratio I've ever encountered. I add some Marvel Mystery Oil to bring my mix to 40:1 but I do it more for the fact Amsoil Saber smells horrible than for protection. I run my 32:1 Lawn Boy Duraforce mower , my 40:1 McCulloch chainsaw, my 50:1 snow thrower, blower, string trimmer and hedge trimmers with equal results. 93 octane with synthetic 2 cycle oil = 1 can to handle all.

      The biggest problems with gallons and ounces, is that their are at least 2 different systems in use, US and UK, and each comes with a liquid ounce that is also different, and products tend not to state which one is used. Was a US product sold in Canada remarked for UK gallons and ounces, rather than US ones? Some companies did convert and some didn't and you sometimes saw two product lines from the same company where some were converted and some were not, with neither being marked as to which was which. Metric measure is fully standardized. It also has a finer granularity, which is better for critical measurement.

      It is just sizes that are different. Nothing else. It is based on water. 1000 ml in a litre. (litre is similar to a quart) 1 cubic centimetre (CC) is a square cm of water which is a centimetre in length. 100 centimetres is a meter which is just more that a yard. 2.54 centimetres in an inch. One litre of water is a kilogram of weight. It is basic science. Not just words that mean something different in each measurement like the old system. We converted up here in Canada years ago and to be honest the old system (What the U.S. uses) is becoming confusing and I am 61. Temperature. Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius (32 F) and boils at 100 degrees (the old 212). It takes a bit of work but today in Alberta we were at 10 degrees Celsius which is about 50 F.
