As a seller I always eat the costs so that I get good feedback and my cards sell faster. I also pay for shipping. Fees are a part of life, when selling always compute the fees into your expected profits. If the card does not offer enough profit, it is saved for a later date or traded.

    • @fsmoura

Good for you. When I sell I demand that the buyer cover all fees, shipping, anything imaginable. If he even considers the possibility of letting out a peep about it, I Initiate a stare-down protocol so uncomfortable as to be able to make a rock statue sweat bullets-so this buyers knows who is going to get out on top in this struggle. I just wish my LGS had more traffic.

I think this analysis misses the point that market volume for the vast majority of collectibles is too low to ever liquidate a collection of any reasonable size in a reasonable time for a reasonable cost.
For instance if I had 100k in some random older set, how long would it take to liquidate? How much slide would have to occur?
Interested in people’s thoughts on this.

    • @ethansuckbutt5495

You are 100 Percent on target. The liquidity on older cards is VERY poor unless you offer to sell well under published TCG "market price" rates and even then ONE card can sit another 1-3 months in your collection. Can you imagine people like Rudy unloading 100 cards of same name. The only way he could do this is create a short term market by pumping or showing his recent collection buys and hope enough idiots buy into his nonsense to create demand.

  • @Infinite_War

the problem is eBay charges 13% to the seller + shipping + tax on items that you already paid for + tax + shipping. They take the 13% from the total price of the object which ends up with you actually losing money. Now government is stepping in forcing small people to either pay an exorbitant price for a tax advisor or keep extensive records just to show they are selling things at a loss.

I don't agree. If you sell a house with 200k profit fees is not a big deal. Selling 100k cards for 40-60k and pay 13% (18-20) FOR Non us spellers is. A Payment in Europe cost 0/0.14 or 0.35 private/ business / online. Yes Cents! You understand understand PayPal asked 4-8% for any euro or non euro Payment? 2,5% creditcard that is a lot of money and they rip you off 5-10% on exchange rates too!

That is fine and dandy. I started on ebay in 1998 and their fees were 5.75% for the first $25 , 2.75% for the balance over $25. Now they want power of attorney, to be the beneficiary of your life insurance policy and if you want people to actually see your listing pay an additional percentage to "Promote your listing."

    • @ThomasJames69420

Most payment processors only charge fees to cover the cost of business and to cover credit card fees. PayPal for example only charges 2.9% last I checked which is reasonable.
Ebay charges 13% in addition to payment processing, but that's worth it due to the market exposure they provide.

Real estate fees are obfuscated in loans (which themselves have obfuscated fees) whereas direct fees are direct. You notice what you see and you feel. And it's extremely significant that appreciation on homes and held equities doesn't come down as normal income.

  • @patrickbateman69420
    @patrickbateman69420 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It's simple: people who have no life experience and try to be an eNtREprEneUr with collectibles are never _taught_ the right mindset. They don't educate themselves and get butthurt when fees, which have been part of business since long before they were born, inevitably come along.
There's no one to answer to except themselves and whichever aloof platform they're selling on, so they either teach themselves and get over it, or they stay a timmy and eventually fail.

It is probably because most people are selling $5-$500 worth of cards/sealed product at a time, so the fees (shipping, platform, payment, etc.) are a larger % of those sales. Real estate is a pretty terrible comparison, as they are different types of investments. Shelter is needed, you can rent it out, you can improve it, repairs, insurance, other liabilities, etc. All those things are much harder to do with MTG cards and sealed product. Stocks are a better comparison, but like Rudy says... there is $0 in fees until you hit your ST/LT capital gains that are only on your profit. So with stocks, your fees usually don't hit until you have already made money, but with MTG cards - those fees are baked in even when you need to sell at a loss. So really, MTG cards are like other hobbies and not like real estate or stock... so why compare the fees of very different assets/liabilities?

This doesn't apply to this hole conversation but I'm sure you can get more out of this than I do. I saw somewhere humans only see one node ahead of them and one node before them in a chain of events. A simple example would be electricity. I need electricity to power my ev so I plug it into the magic power box in the wall then after a while the car goes vroom. People don't look past the outlet to see how their electricity is produced, is it coal, natural gas, nuclear? We just know evs are not dirty like gas cars. If you want to go the other way in a chain of events, a few people are waking up to recycling. Most people understand getting a bottle then recycling it but as soon as the recycling truck takes it we don't care we are happy we did our part.. We are not concerned about the cost of recycling and we certainly are not concerned about how recycling used to get shipped to third world countries then basically dumped in their landfills. We just see the node before us and the node after us.

These fears about fees or shipping costs or whatever, they really come down to insecurity. The people who fear paying 12% in fees, or who are afraid of the hundreds of scammers they are going to send cards to and get chargebacks put on them, they are insecure. They don't believe in themselves enough to think they can have enough success to get past those costs, and they don't believe in other people enough to not be trying to scam them constantly. Whenever I see people being super triggered or upset about fees or other standard business costs, I feel a strong sense of empathy for them, because I feel like they must be in a rougher place than they are letting on.

It's not hard to understand... With the TCG market there's a lot of focus on the big swings of cards. Because it's less predictable than most other normal investments, there's a hype around how something doubled in price over a month.
The reason fees with cards are so relevant/make it significantly less worth it is because the window of making a worth while profit is so narrow and nebulous that a 20 ish general net additional fees just to try and make money (fees plus the sales tax when you buy it initially plus shipping) eat into the legitimacy of the pursuit. But all that is highlighted are the large swings both up and down. So the only real "investment" worth it in the TCG world is buying what you want because you enjoy it and hoping that over a long enough time horizon you get a return as a reward.
Also houses and stocks don't get reprints.

I think it mostly comes down to transaction value and profit margins. If both are high then fees aren't really an issue, but if profit margins on an item are tight or it's just low value in general like a card $5 or less fees can be a huge problem. It's not so bad dealing in sealed product but when considering whether to crack something open for singles fees are often the difference between a profit and a loss.

I don't know that I would agree that those 'feels bad' moments don't happen when making larger purchases, Rudy. I think it is the 'cry once' effect you're seeing - most people buy a new home once, maybe twice in their lifetimes; a new car once every... what, 5-10 years? Those fees are a sticking point to a lot of us--I personally will specifically refuse to pay 'lot fees' and other bull car dealerships like to tack on--and they DO cause us to gripe, but we don't really run into it as often. But no one likes 'additional fees'; the cost of a thing should be up front and transparent. I am NEVER happy to see a percentage stapled onto a purchase, even the 7% sales tax pisses me off because it's double dipping. I was taxed when I made my money, now I have to be taxed again to spend it? Fuck that.

well, I don't think it's being disingenuous, there's a big difference between taxes and fees when it comes to selling things like this. The taxes are only calculated against your profits. The fees are calculated usually against the entire sale. so the percentage numbers can be very different. if I sell a million home but only make $100,000 profit, even a 30% tax is $30,000. a 3% fee is $30,000.

Like 1 per 20 tcg's stores rate ) now they made 40 % profit from each sealed products (in comparison with Amazon prices) .I already commented that is a 5.25 million people city an taxes are around 16 % of taxes over the rent and services (I. S. R. In Spanish) for the owner of this kindof stores and the workers paycheck is reduced by 16 % that is part of the owners tax duty (plus buyer's 16% tax as added value taxesIVA im Spanish) per product that's charged in the price before the 40 % of profit

For some reason eBay took 13,2% fee + 1,6% international fee + 24% VAT of fee part. I don't understand where this VAT comes from? Is because of internal money transactions between EU and USA and eBay wants to take that cost from seller? Those fees are unbeatable especially when buyer can do basically what they want.

The only fee issue I've had was when I first started selling I dipped my toes in by selling bulk. The flat $0.30 payment processing fee (combined with increased stamp prices) made it impossible to sell anything under about $0.20 for a profit if I remember my math correctly. Thankfully I made some adjustments to my model to figure out how to at least scratch out a bit with those bulk cards and focused more on the overall profit vs per card earnings.

If you run any kind of business you pay taxes or someone will knock on your door in the future with a big suprise. Lg:s should be much more supported by the TCG companies. It is one thing to trade cards but a secondary market like this just promote fake cards etc. 😮‍💨

Has to be the hobby sellers who are worried about fees, particularly with the likes of ebay.
Those fees are a cost of doing business and are typically deductible, but you have to be operating as a business and not Joe Blow with a fistful of bulk rares.

    • @therealtimmy13
      @therealtimmy13 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Joe Blow is NOT reporting the sale on his taxes, nor are they keeping track of what they paid (at least for tax purposes). So let’s say that saves them 20% on the “profit” they make.
It’s easy to overcome the volume offset if you aren’t paying taxes. I’ve never met ANYONE selling as a hobby that does.
Except me of course. I definitely do. But I follow the law Mr. IRS. Definitely.

*You're right, the IRS loves picking legal battles with those with money for lawyers and accounts who know loopholes.*
*They definitely didn't say that targeting the poor has earned them over a billion in revenue simply because poor people PANIC when they see an official letter saying you will be brought to court if you don't pay that $200 you owe.*
*They also notoriously send out marked up bills because nobody keeps their records, so if you owe $600 they will say $1,000 just to see if you pay it.*
*If paying a few hundred keeps the IRS away, per person, there's more revenue there than they've ever made as an organization while targeting the most uneducated, frightened people.*
