I am so glad you got to experience Killarney & the fish & chips. The fish they serve is pickerel, sweet, light & flaky. If you thought this was the best, it’s really ahead of you in the Benjamin Islands north of Manitoulin. Enjoy our part of heaven.
Gotta nerd out a bit on the geology. Where this is is the edge of the Canadian Shield, a huge horseshoe-shaped area of hard granite that wraps around Hudson Bay. All the huge lakes to the west and the St Lawrence River are basically the outline. This rock formed about forty km under a field of volcanos billions of years ago, then everything but the granite got removed by erosion and glaciers. At the point where this video starts, the lumpy grey rock on top is limestone that was laid down on the seabed only a few hundred million years ago, and the pink flatter layer on the bottom is granite. The cliffs get higher because more and more granite is exposed, and it's a much harder rock than limestone. From here to the north and east, it's rugged granite mountainous terrain, while to the south it's flatter limestone bedrock that's mostly covered in debris brought down from the north by the glaciers. I consider this the border between Southern and Northern Ontario, and you've just left my neighborhood. Please come back sometime.
May 10, 2023. My wife and I appreciate your videos especially in what we consider the finest cruising area in North America….North Channel/Georgian Bay. You both show a love for the adventures that boating offers. And doing the Great Loop at your young age will give memories long long after this journey is over. 😊
Spent my summers on the North Channel, St Joe Island, at the south end of St. Mary's River. Sailed down to Killarney once at 10 yo (60+ years ago... and I still remember it!) Love the No. Channel!
I spent nearly 15 years cruising the North Channel out of Mackinaw City Michigan. Like Jen, really loved the area. Brings back many great memories. I now live our of the snow belts in the Knoxville area and miss Michigan and Canada's northern beauty. Thank you.
Great job on your videos! Beth and I love watching them to relive our Loop adventure. You capture the experience and spirit of the Loop in each video. As a bonus, it is great to see that little 27' Ranger Tug, Amy Marie, that seems to be shadowing you....
First, Jenn’s face when she jumped in was priceless 😂😂😂 Also, that CRUNCH on those fish and chips! I feel like we could’ve heard that when we were all the way in Alaska! Y’all are making us want to be in this area right now!
CANADA is SO BEAUTIFUL! It may be sad to leave one area but there’s always going to be another beautiful spot ahead! The drone shots were awesome…love the boat shots! This looked like an amazing day! Ollie even got to do what she loves…rock fetching!
Just a lovely episode. Wasn't sure if Jen was actually going to take the plunge... Yet she's mustered the courage. Great First Mate‼️👍🏻 See you next time.✨🌊💨🛥🏝🌞✨
What an incredible video! Actually all your footage is beautiful. And thanks to you both for explaining the areas as you go. Thanks Jerry & Jennifer in Arizona 🏜
Great video! It was good to see you two enjoying yourselves, even laughing with you as I watched. What a perfect place to anchor - so calm with tons of beauty everywhere. Hope it won't be such a cultural shock when you return back to the USA side of the Great Loop.
My wife and I did a 2200 mile boat trip last summer. Covered portage cove was definitely our favorite anchorage of the trip! I really enjoy your videos!
@@nickgooderham2389 yes, it was always Pickerel in southeast Michigan when I was growing up too. Walleye seems to be the popular name now. Delicious whatever the name though!!!
We were very very glad that you got to experience Collins Inlet and Covered Portage Cove. They are some of our favorite's. More great territory to come.
i’m from manitoulin! me and my dad came across your channel and have been having a blast watching your journey get closer! we boat around these areas as well and it’s nice to see others enjoying it!
You guys did a fantastic job of documenting what it's really like in this area. The few Looper videos I have seen shot up here tend to go like: 'We started out this morning in Georgian Bay, our last day here, now we move on to the north channel. Made a quick pit stop in Killarney, ate some of the best Fish & Chips ever and after that we moved on to get anchored in a cove in the north channel," all the while just giving snippets of video quickly edited together and that would be about it. Not that this was a bad way to do videos, just that you guys provide more video of a place and give the sense that you all are "stopping to smell the roses" while many people are on a mission to just check off the punch list of their Loop trip stops. Great job Ya'all. You shot this on my birthday. Living down here in Florida as long as I have, NO WAY would I jump into 60 something degree water. For me, if it's below 85 degrees, ain't no way I'm going in that water. Plus, I've got about 30 years on you all in terms of age. At one time I'd have gone in that water, not anymore. It has as much to do with living in Florida. As Stephanie Abrams from The Weather Channel, who is a Florida girl says about Floridians, once the air temps are below 70, we are getting cold and bundling up. We sure don't go into cold water. Lovely video of a lovely place.😢
If I lived even a hour and a half from “Herbert’s” I think I would still be a regular customer. The way Jen was describing the fish is what I spend lots of time hunting for, especially when we go to the beach. Your videos have turned into a Documentary Series to me & much better than a sailing video because there’s so much more to see AND LEARN….
Bravo!! So entertaining and finally into the part of the lakes that we have and currently cruise in. The Collins Inlet remains one of the best cruise routes we have taken. We anchor in Mill Lake along the Inlet.
Did you see the Indian head in the rocks at Covered? You remind me how lucky some of us are to have Covered Portage as a go to anchorage. Thank you! You do a wonderful job of sharing your excitement as you visit each new destination. 🇨🇦
Thank YOU for all the inspiration and get me to pivot. Now watching you from my trawler. Still amazed how you two influenced me to change my plans this year.
Your videos have convinced me I never want to do the great loop..... There is a lifetime of amazing boating destinations all around the great lakes. I think the "Great Lakes Loop" is in our future. :) And on the good side, avoid all the salt water lol
My husband was the prime geologist who studied Georgian Bay. He is featured in a documentary by David Suzuki if you are interested. His name is Nick Culshaw, sadly he died last summer. Georgian Bay was his favourite place in all the world and he had seen quite a few. From Antartica to Africa to Romania to parts of Europe. He calls Georgian Bay the "Louvre " of geology.
The fish is Pickerel or as Americans call it Walleye. Kind of funny you saying you don't eat a lot of fried foods. I think you meant deep fried. I have watched you cook and that frying pan with oil is your friend. Fried mushrooms, eggs, onions, peppers. 😂 you remember when you Passed Henry's fish restaurant on San Souci Island? I used to go there a lot in the 80's. They had their own commercial fishing boat, and only served Walleye ( Pickerel) It was all you can eat with sides. Just tell them if you wanted it fried, baked, or grilled. Now they buy their fish which is perch caught in Lake Erie.
The north channel is so beautiful. Your video quality and content is top shelph. I'm sure it's going to be on a lot of Boaters destinations list Plans for 2023?
We call them Pickerel. Americans call them Walleye. If it was Pike, the Fillets would be shorter to avoid the "y" bones. A good cook can make Pike taste like Pickerel. Cleaning Pike is really tricky cause of the "y" bones.
I haven't watched yet, but as there are no comments yet I'll drop one. Thank you guys so much for being so diligent in recording your trip around the loop. Every episode is a pleasure to watch. Especially the Canadian part.
Wow our country looks so beautiful! My question is how can you afford to travel like this? I have travelled the waters to beausoliel island by both my aluminum boat and my dads houseboat
It really does! We run our brand schoandjo full time! We make money from various sources, great loop guides, our website, and here on TH-cam. Our entire Great Loop we spent working, so it's always a trade off. Not the same trip as if we were retired. Cheers.

Pickerel.........Walleye is what us gringos call them ha ha haaa
@@doncritzer2798 that's because they are walleye, pickerel and completely different.

My grandparents used to camp in Killarney back in the 60s and my aunt still drives 4 hours just to get fish n' chips. The area is absolutely stunning
Impressive. Thank you for sharing your adventure. Also happy that 🇨🇦 has not disappointed you. We will be sad to see you depart.

No problem, just a small bruise! I don't think Ollie enjoyed it, we enjoyed it much more than her 😅 Thanks for watching Suzanne!

Yes likely walleye, aka pickerel in Ontario.

You definitely can't go wrong!
We spend our summers on our boat in the north channel and can never get enough.
We were at Killarney for fish and chips 25 years ago. We met people who had flown from Detroit and Chicago just for the fish and chips

It certainly brought out the “inner children”! 😎
I enjoy your video's very much. There are two on The Great Loop I view, yours and a Canadian couple called Stay Cool ( their boats name ).
Great video today and thankyou for visiting Canada. Hope to see you cruise this inside passage of B.C./Washington/Alaska some day.
Great vids, you have got to come to the west coast, then you will see mountains! Desolation Sound, the water is 80 degrees. San Juan islands.
Really Really beautiful up there.
No doubt!
Probably walleye… looks yummy!
Love that um counter, I've updated the um log.
haha thanks Mark!
İ AM VERY HAPPY SEE 2 HAPPY PEOPLE AT THE SEA JOURNEY Greetıng 1 sailor to you Fethiye Turkey zenjoy your day Safe trip
Labatts beer.......my favorite thing in Canada

Have you thought of writing a looper destination book? You guys have great videos. I would totally buy a book of places to visit from you guys.
When you are on the water do you get the wonderful northern pine smell? Or do you get nose-blind to it up there?

Absolutely! It doesn't get old!

What was the water temp F* ?
If I remember correctly, it was around 60 degrees

Just curious...how come you guys don't fish? Nothing better than fresh caught fish.
What kind of fish is it?
Not sure! Forgot to check 😅 Something local though!
Great video - nice work! If you want to see more Killarney videos check out this channel. Cheers!
Cruising around the north my channel bit on the area country Geography getting to you my is the Edge of the Canadian Shield.
Where are you from house? Where are you from city?

Also you are not IN the Loop. You are cruising in Ontario, Canada.
😂
just Georgian Bay ..no "the" .
I thought you guys disappeared. YT stopped notifying me about your awesome videos
Oh thats too bad! We're still here, not going anywhere 💪
....but are those chips as good as MacDonald's french fries doe?
