  • The Boss Katana has a few choices for wah pedal emulations, and they are all rather good. In this series, Paul from The Studio Rats explains the controls. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    This may be the best video, that I have seen in a very long time. Many miss information, important information, I correct it, not trolling, but it is so refreshing to find a video that absolutely is fantastic, valuable, informed and very well done. I was starting to lose hope, as many successful youtube/video producers, starting making honest reviews, but then when subscribers hit a number that appealed to companies, suddenly they were BSing people to make endorsers happy and trust, became screwing loyal persons. You deserve to be sponsored, your video is fantastic, but others, I just wish, choice who they let pay them and it is cash vs integrity. EX: I have made so many honest great videos, that I just got a great offer, so now I will just sell their crap, people devoted will buy it, being loyal to the video producer, who just sold out (integrity). * You deserve all that support imaginable and I am saying in a friendly way, when endorsements come and they should, please maintain the great integrity you have, not be like others, as offers will continue to come in. This is a disappointment in others, sadly, not you, but this is just so well done and valuable! Keep up the amazing work!

    How about the part where I hook up my proline brand expression pedal (works with all my line 6 stuff) and does not work, at all? Either via the back amp jack or the GA/FC Exp pedal input 2 as you outlined in your other video? All assignments are made, and proper FX have been chosen and turned on....nothing. It's been a few hours now of fiddling and I really, really don't want to spend $150 on a new wah when it sounds like the ones in the amp are great! Using the latest version of the Boss Tone Studio for Katana MK II.

    Great vid...but here's y problem....If you turn ON the way, you can't turn it off and play without it. The pedal doesn't have a switch built in to itself to change back to NON wah. The only thing I can see to do is clone the channel and make another right beside it on the GFAC that is without wah but has all the other setting the same. All they needed to do was put an on off switch on the pedal. I actually use a cry baby mini going in the front instead of using the katana wah. Works fine but defeats the purpose of the GFAC. STILL love my Artist combo and gig with it on a regular basis. I never go off .5 watts even in a big venue. We mic up so all I need to hear is stage volume. Our sound gal is going to control all volumes anyway. Thanks for the great vids on the katana. You really have saved my bacon many times.

    These Katana videos are very informative, thank you! Seeing as you are responding to comments on this video as recently as a day ago, I was wondering if you could address the fact that the Pedal Position reading in Tone Studio never read 100? Even when you said you pressed the pedal all the way down, at 1:29, the reading stops at 92. I ask because I have the opposite effect, where my reading won't return to 0 consistently, even with the pedal all the way up. About 30% of the time the reading stops on 1 or 2. Reaches 100 just fine, travels smoothly throughout the range, and 70% of the time will return to 0, but not everytime. Not the biggest deal with a lot of effects and parameters, but very noticeable and annoying when it happens while using pitch shifting or pedal bend effects :(
    Edit: I should mention that I am using a Proline expression pedal, it has a knob on it for controlling minimum pedal position and rotating the knob fully back and forth has the same effect, works fine 70% of the time, 30% of the time stops on 1 or 2 Pedal Position reading. Also I tried 2 of the same pedals, just to be sure the first wasn't defective, same result with both. I know they are cheap pedals so maybe they just don't play nice with Katana, just weird that they pretty much work, just not 100% of the time. Anyway, would be glad to hear any thoughts you have on the matter.
    Thanks again for the very useful videos :)

      @@TheStudioRats after looking around on the internet it seems there exists 0 ways to switch the pedal fx on and off with the GA-FC. Boss should update firmware so that holding the FX button would toggle the Pedal FX. This would be intuitive.
      These are the 3 solutions to toggle wah and each has a drawback.
      1) don't use pedal fx; assign your FX to wah and the expression pedal's function from "Pedal FX/FV" to simply "FX"
      drawback here is now you're using up your FX for wah, so wah can't be combined with other fx.
      2) purchase yet another switch and hook it into the other port on the GA-FC (FS1). In Tone Studio assign FS1 to "PEDAL FX ON/OFF".
      drawback here is you're spending more money on a pedal, that pedal is taking up space, and you've lost ability to use FS1 for other purposes like tap tempo.
      3) use computer
      drawback here is obvious... might be okay for tracking in studio but not for live performances.
      Real solution I think is for Boss to implement toggling via holding the FX button on the GA-FC.

      @@FunkyELF there is a fourth solution - create a channel which is 100% dedicated to the wah pedal for example - One lead tone without Wah and one with Wah which basically works as u would switch the wah on. Only way I have found to do it with GA-FC and EXP pedal. It is a bummer but this is what it is.

      @@FunkyELF Hi Eric, awesome, thank you! So option #1 ....Yeah...the wah sound is not as good simply as an assigned FX. It is much, much better (like the video shows) when assigned as "PEDAL FX" except...you can never turn it off!!! Maybe it's worth the investment in yet ANOTHER external footswitch to turn on/off the "PEDAL FX" option. No matter what I do I can't get the Wah as simply "FX" to sound anywhere near as sweet as the "PEDAL FX" on. What a huge oversight by Boss :(

I currently do not own a looper pedal..i dont think the GA-FC is a looper, & im still at an intermidiate level..(i use the AUX, find a backtracking online & jam along to classic rock style trackings from 80bpms-110bpms)..the GA-FC pedal is not a looper if im correct (since i dont play live gigs or not feeling ready for a band, generally it doesnt serve me any real purpose)?

Or what is the downside to plugging my pedals (most that have the effects built in), but whats the downside to plugging in my boss pedal board Or cry baby wah staight into the top (main input) & plugging guitar into pedal? Should i take the delay/phaser/chorus..effects that come stock with MK2 100 & take them off pedal board & plug them into effect loops inputs...does that take a standard input cable or a TRS (i dont have one of those currently, but if it will make a noticable difference i’d do it, on the flip side, if i plug in my pedals & doubled up on an external & interal effect that is the same/very similar...for example my Boss SuperOverdrive pedal, & turn the booster on to Blues Overdrive..internal effect..or using Tape Echo delay on the amp & whatever green boss delay pedal i have, using them at the same time??

    So, if the pedal min is set (slightly) greater than zero, does that mean that when the pedal position is at zero, the wha is effectively off? I mean, in a gigging situation, I wouldn't want to switch channels when i _don't_ want the wha effect. I just want it to go away when the pedal is not engaged. I'd hate to think that if you had a "wha wha" channel programmed, that your sound will ALWAYS be in "some" sweep position.

      @@ZaryaMain That's pretty bad to give acess to effects and then have no assignable way to turn them on/off in a live situation. Especially a wah. It's terrible to have to waste a whole preset for this. Come on Boss!

      @FunkyELF 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brenovsky_ I just registered my katana with Boss so that I could do an email support. Doubt it will go anywhere unless the community comes together and we all do the same.
      Here is what I put.
      ===== Feel free to copy/paste to www.boss.info/backstage/support =====
      I own the Katana-100 MkII, GA-FC foot controller and an expression pedal. I have my expression pedal plugged into the GA-FC. In Tone Studio I am able to toggle Pedal FX which turns my expression pedal from a volume control into a wah.
      How can I toggle Pedal FX from my GA-FC?
      Pressing the "FX" button toggles the "FX", it doesn't toggle "PEDAL FX".
      An intuitive way would be to hold the "FX" button on the GA-FC similar to how you hold the panel button to switch banks.
      I have looked around the internet and have seen several others asking this same question on Reddit, Facebook, etc.
      We want a way to toggle Pedal FX from the GA-FC. Without that, the Pedal FX is pretty useless in a live situation since you'd have to hook up a computer to toggle it.

    • @andrewwheelerguitar
      @andrewwheelerguitar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't. Therefore, if using "PEDAL FX" as in Paul's video here, Wah is ALWAYS on and cannot turn off.

      I think the MKII has more voicings but they are very subtle either amp has way more options than you’ll ever be able to utilize the sounds will be sonically the same if you want the amp that sounds better upgrade to the katana artist MkI or MKII they have a larger cabinet and the waza speaker !!There is a comparison video on TH-cam comparing the regular katana to the artist and I noticed quite a difference get the artist MKI OR MKII You won’t regret either one

My the pedal just activates the effect ( doesnt click off ) like a normal wah so , the only way I can think how to disengage it is to click on to another clean channel , and the seem absurd and not practical , If Im missing any help would be great thanks!🙏🙏

      @TheStudioRats  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Henrik, unless I’m wrong, you just save it into the preset.

    • @HenkRijks
      @HenkRijks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheStudioRats Indeed you can, but there's no way to activate/deactivate it from the GAFC footswitch. So it's either on, or off. You could of course use two separate presets, on off, the other on, but that wouldn't make sense. Another trick would be to have it completely bypass when the pedal itself is in max heel position, but that's something for a future update I suppose.
