    the Boss Katana line of amps has a large library of built in effects. In this video series we will see how the built in FX compare with the actual pedal it is trying to recreate.
    In this episode we are comparing the Dunlop Cry Baby Mini Wah pedal against the built-in Katana 100 PEDAL WAH FX.
    I'll be using an M-Audio EX-P expression pedal. It is compatible with the Katana 100, and is the lowest priced expression pedal I've seen.

    Weird, I never had this issue with my Katana 100. Maybe it really is the pedal since I use the recommended Roland EV-5 into the GA-FC foot controller and never had any drops in volume. I really dig your series, keep it up it's great!

    The problem could be boss tone studio being open. By that i mean that if you're not on a saved channel and editing it the software inside the amp gets confused and doesent know if you're trying to use it as a volume or wah pedal.

    Good analysis. The main and driving feature of the Katana to me, is its' profitability, especially for meat and potatoes players like me. A lot of versatility in tones and developing very specific types of channels for specific purposes. A wah type of effect for me though is something that I like to use at the spur of the moment on any channel, kind of a 'global' effect. For that I think a separate pedal works best. Nothing can be everything, I guess, but the Katana gets the job done for me. I have it facing me, due to several comments about the volume I like to play at, as my stage monitor and run it through the direct out. Something that only took me 50 years to figure out. Have a good gig my friends, even when your home by yourself.

    You can see that the expression pedal is giving a full sweep from 0 to 100 so it is working fine. Expression pedals don't affect tone, they only control defined perameters. The problem seems to be in the software. I would say though that the wah should be at the start of the chain. Putting it after the boost may be having an effect on volume when the wah is engaged after the boost.

    For the record, I like the Dunlop better, although that Reso-wah *does* make me think I may need an expression pedal, too. Got my Katana 100 Artist Mk II three days ago, so I am still very much feeling my way around. Took me a day to work out how the damned 'double' knobs work, 'cause I is old.

    Just tried my 100w katana with an m audio ex-p pedal and it seems to work with the version 2 firmware without a volume drop on chain 3. I'm using a boost so not sure if that helps but the volume goes onto max when I click fx on the gafc with wah on. The m audio pedal works ok as long as you use the calibration on the side to make sure it gets the full range. I think it has a 12k pot which is slightly different from the 10k pot on the ev-5 but it seems close enough.

    Not sure if it really matters but the Katana manual warns not to use other brands of expression pedals besides specific Roland-brand pedals. Manual says it can cause damage to the software. (Not sure if there's really a difference or if they are just trying to sell more Roland products)

  • @Davo2233
    @Davo2233 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s like your expression pedal wants to work as a volume pedal but the internal effect makes the wah effect kick in also. What happens if u plug pedal in and disengage the wah setting from effects chain and see if that controls volume like a volume pedal would effect a tube amp. Run through front and back too

    • @landonbailey
      @landonbailey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ya I tried a bunch of settings and no luck. I would just stick with an official Boss expression pedal. :)

  • @greatvanzini
    @greatvanzini 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You got a GSS Shirt. Cool! & Wow forget about the m=audio using it internally. Any old Crummy Wah sounds at least that good & would be more consistent. So me thinks! Question,,, Has the software given you any grief in other areas?

    • @landonbailey
      @landonbailey  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +greatvanzinni ya GSS rocks! I don't just have the shirt, I have an episode th-cam.com/video/sNfWJTgnfV8/w-d-xo.html

  • @jtbeck69
    @jtbeck69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not to be a complete dimwit, but where do you have the pedal plugged in? Is it straight into the exp pedal input? I'm trying to get a Behringer exp pedal to work on my Kat 100 and having zero luck. Probably just because it's a crap pedal.

    • @landonbailey
      @landonbailey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey there! I believe it was plugged into the exp input. I don't believe most non Roland exp pedals will work ok. I had issues too. 👍😁

    • @Srapture
      @Srapture 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Jeff. I had a behringer pedal that I sent back. It works perfectly in the FX input of the GA-FC pedal. Into the amp itself, it sometimes sees it as a switch as well as an expression pedal, which switches channels. Is probably what's up with this guys volume drops, I'd imagine.

    • @jtbeck69
      @jtbeck69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thx for the reply. I don't have the GA-FC, although it's on my wish list! The FCV100 pedal was actually switching my effects on and off as well! It was changing from the auto wah to tremolo or something. It also only seems to have any expression effect when my heel is almost completely down and the toe end of it is almost completely up. Sigh. Maybe it'll work on one of my other amps as a volume pedal.

    • @jtbeck69
      @jtbeck69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure that I went too cheap and got bit on the arse. Thanks for getting back to me. I freaking love this amp, so I guess I'm going to make the proper investments in accessories to actually work properly.

    • @Srapture
      @Srapture 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a damn fine amp. The M-Audio EXP expression pedal has worked out better for the katana for me. It only operates passively, which is all that's really needed when operating with the katana's volume rather than a separate volume before it. Also, the minimum volume dial actually works with it, unlike the behringer. It's the cheapest pedal on amazon too, so worth thinking about.

      They probably just want you to buy the Roland one. An expression pedal is an expresion pedal, and any one should work with almost anything that supports it.

      hey thanks! I don't know how those would connect. I would check out Boss/Roland official site and see if there is a user manual for GAFC. I did a video on the GAFC but didnt try the setup you are looking at. sorry! hope that helps

    Do you have already try the "GT FX floorboard" hack (not really hack)? It's a GT100 editor modified for the Katana series. It allows you to use more fx in the same time and more routing options too! The link in case you want to try (it's a safe software, no risk for the amp or computer): sourceforge.net/projects/fxfloorboard/files/experimental/?SetFreedomCookie
