Sometimes they're delicious, sometimes they're weird, and then every once in a while you hit one like him cooking bacon in a hotpot and they're just plain offensive
I'm a foreigner, and I love durian. It helps to have an open mind and also to know what to expect. That creamy sweetness is pure magic. And once you get a taste for them, the smell is actually pretty good.
@@ThelmaThelma-fd6kn I mostly settle for imported durian flavor candy, Chun Guang made in China. It smells and tastes like the real thing, and it's cheap. It's got an onion/garlic note, a sulfury note, and an overwhelming custardy creamy sweetness that satisfies something deep inside. It's like durian is some kind of medicinal fruit or something. Maybe it has certain minerals the body needs? Anyway, it really is the king of fruits. And it seems like we Americans who love durian are in a special club, haha.
the idea of a little local place offering only durian is so striking... It's like people normal dont buy enough durians, so they need to curate a location specifically for those who actually enjoy the fruit, as to not waste any.
I think these are the ones that the wholesaler can't sell because they're too small, shaped weird, or even the wrong color. So they sell them like this Just a guess since I've seen strawberry wholesalers do something similar. And I don't think there's any shortage of demand for durian
Earlier this year, I ordered freeze dried durian-thanks to your channel!- because I know it'll never be available fresh in my area. I was neutral toward it: I could appreciate the sweetness, but the rotten onion funk never dissipated for me. I think it would take a lot of time and exposure for me to truly gain a craving for it. But I'm really glad I got to try it, and it's a very interesting fruit!
It would be best if you tried a fresh durian to truly appreciate its taste. I love durian, but I will never try a freeze-dried one. I've seen some that look really funky, especially from places that don't get a supply of fresh durian and often think, no wonder foreigners hate durian if these are the only ones they get to try.
There are a few Asian stores here that carry fresh frozen whole Monthong durian. It is so good! One day I want to try Musang King. Here’s a tip for first time durian eating. Do not concentrate on the smell. Instead, focus on the sweetness of the fruit. The main reasons some people don’t like it are the smell, and the texture, but it’s soft like a custard or a pudding.
@@lindawolffkashmir2768 Yes I don't undersand why people have a problem with the texture... it's just soft and creamy like ice cream. LOL I have not tried Monthong, but I am very sure you will absolutely love our Musang King. In fact, if you come to Malaysia, there are so many different varieties which you can try, each has their own unique tastes. I personally do not like the sweet durian... I prefer the bitter sweet ones. There is a depth of flavour with these.
So a few years ago my brother and I were in China town in Philadelphia and we bought one of these having NO idea what we bought and the vendor could tell… we got it home and did whatever it took crack it open… the smell is the one thing we will NEVER forget lol
That's an amazing deal. I was in KL last month and the durian were more like $6 a piece. Ended up spending about $45. Good thing I'm rich. I will check this out next time I am in Malaysia.
Years ago a Malaysian friend tried to introduce me to durian. We opened her fridge, and I was hit by a wall of smell that was a lot like dirty feet. Maybe one day I'll try again, and be able to appreciate this fruit.
We visited Penang and had durian from a street vendor chosen by our guide, Shirleen. She was horrified that we were the first westerners who actually enjoyed durian ! We even tried durian coffee much to the surprise of the coffee house !!
That must of been your heaven! Buffets are mine as well but only when they serve fried chicken and other goodies you usually cannot get anywhere else but a buffet :D

I've never tried Durian. I love fruit, it's like a religion for me so I see no reason why I wouldn't like it. I like strong tasting food, love onions and stinky cheese!
Thats so cheap for durian buffet and by looking at it, they gv u good durian too. Money worthy. I thought only us Malays used to drink water from the husk..didnt know U all did it too. But washing hand from the husk is a new trick for me. Nice
Since I live in the states I've never had a chance to try a fresh durian, only durian 'flavored' packaged candies and sweets at grocery stores that have international food and I thought they tasted pretty good but I'd like to try a real one some time even if I end up hating it :P
You must go to a genuine Asian grocery. It’s usually kept in the freezer section, and if you can’t find a whole one, they most likely will carry frozen segments.
@@lindawolffkashmir2768 Thank you! The Asian grocery stores nearest to me are quite small and have very limited freezer space so I've never seen durian there u-u I'll have to see about visiting a bigger place one day

funny how everyone experiences durian differently. for me, it smells like feet and tastes like butterscotch and cooked onion. im glad i have tried it, but don't think i would eat it very often.
I heard someone say it tasted like bleach to them. To me it honestly tasted like garlic and onions(but really creamy)but had a sweet undertone that threw it off for me and confused my tastebuds 😂. It smells like chlorine to me too, which isn’t a super unappealing smell to me, sort of like gasoline (weird, I know). Like I feel like I’m so close to being able to just eat it and maybe like it one day. I know it has a ton of health benefits! I did not know it could warm up your core though. Also the husk tricks are really cool.
Never heard about durian raising the eater's body temperature or the need to drink some salty water to counteract this rise, though. Is this something you've experienced or been taught in your culture, tradition perhaps?
I dunno why many people think durian smells of sewer. I got to experience it before, and the smell is a bit unique... Mostly pleasant smells despite having a "strong punch" inside the nostrils... Like a much more pleasant version of oud perfume, and a little hint of armpit but in a non-disgusting way 😹 Even blue cheese which people claim to smell like feet... I love blue cheeses and they just smell strong of a wee bit of armpit too but not in a disgusting way. But the Japanese natto, that I can attest that it does smell like smelly feet, smelly groin, and two-week old used unwashed undies 😹
That's about half the price that I have been paying for half a frozen durian (de-shelled and packaged) or one frozen durian, lol. I'm jealous. Although, I've come to find out that shelling (with a small knife) and eating a whole durian is a lot for me. And now I'm craving some.
I would love to see if there is a correlation between people. Those that love Cilantro vs. those that think it tastes like soap. I would be curious to know if you liked/hated it, if you would be inclined to enjoy Durian. Just a rambling thought…
I know durian are nice but I quit eating them because my mum one time keeps buying durian and it makes me vomit when I smell them. But seeing the durian is very cool.
I notice that the vendors smell the fruit when they first cut it open: perhaps they can tell how ripe the fruit is by its smell? And perhaps they're so used to it the general smell of the fruit doesn't overwhelm them, so that they can pick up differences in the aroma.
