Opera Singer Reacts to Miley Cyrus (Slide Away)

  • I love Miley a lot, I think she deserves some respect for what she grew up dealing with and deep down I wish she had been a country music star. 😆 I know I said she needs to be left alone too, and then immediately judged her super greasy hair and I’m sorry I’m a hypocrite. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On her instagram she talked recently about doing breathing exercises with her coach, and here you mostly see me addressing the clenching abdomen and muscles throat- hopefully she’s started to work that out!

The purpose of the wet hair is to represent like she came from the ocean and her voice is already damaged in this performance that’s why she sounds raspier than before. She naturally has that husky voice.

Her hair is literally wet, not dirty. Also her vocals chord were damaged and she had a surgery after this performance, so actually I think she did a great job. But tbh people love the huskiness in her voice, maybe her technique is bad but I’m speechless when I hear her screaming and I love it. Not everyone has this pure voice, it’s just the way she is. But anyway I think you should wait for her next performance, after surgery and react

Your frustration with Miley's breathing made me crack up haha. I am curious though if you do a breathing video what your take is on breathing through the mouth vs. the nose. I know Montserrat Caballe (legend!) advocated/taught breathing through the mouth whereas many other singers preach breathing through the nose. The whole dry air argument. A few other other videos ideas for your ever growing list:
Who Sang The "Queen Of The Night" Staccatos The Best?
Any Jessie J on Singer 2018 (I'm partial to "My heart will go on" or "I have nothing")

One thing I hate about pop-stars is not the pop-stars themselves, but it seems that a lot of their vocal "coaches" don't know what they're doing or are sub-par. They don't seem to notice the intricacies of voice and breathing.
Like I love Leona Lewis, but when I heard she worked with Brett Manning, nothing changed from before and after and her voice severely thinned and is shriller than ever before.
Man I loved when you mentioned Caruso ugh. I'm not an opera-fanatic but something about his voice is just amazing.

    Hello
I suppose that you might want to look into Hua Chenyu. He is a Chinese singer I discovered after listening to a lot of Dimash. He is not as fantastic a vocalist as Dimash, but very unique and still worth listening to. He shines most, when he displays his abilities as a songwriter, composer and an arranger.
His fans always mention in the comments that he sometimes cares more about living up to his artistic goals than singing with perfect or healthy technique. I would love to see your view on that.
    Some suggestions:
„The Fake Monk“ A song composed by him that does not fit in any box❗️
„Nunchucks“ The song has rock, rap (and chinese opera) elements
I really like that you explain a lot of technique in your videos. 👍👍

Even though I don't always agree with you, I'm in your camp when it comes to using the abs or trying to manipulate the diaphragm. Personally, after going through so many vocal teachers, I hate it when they ask me to support, or push, or even suck it in or try to manipulate the diaphragm in any way. It seems very unnecessary and it hinders my singing. At the same time I don't think shoulder breathing is really that bad of an issue unless it affects your ease of sound production as seen in Miley's case.

Indeed, her voice has a beautiful timber. It's funny how come such successful artists don't get proper coaching...!
Speaking of weird techniques, I recently discovered the gem called "Donna Missal". I first heard of her in Elliot Wheeler's "Power", where she is an absolute powerhouse, but even though I love everything about her singing, I was wondering if she was singing in a healthy technique or not. She goes a bit Bonnie Tyler on it. There are no live videos of this song (but it's great and there is also a tenor singing "Una Furtiva Lagrima" along, brilliant merge), but there is this other song of hers titled "Keep Lying" which is a very nice old school rock ballad and again she seems to push a bit too hard. She seems to be doing that often.

That raspiness, as you mentioned, was not always there. The reason in this video her voice sounds so raspy is because of tonsillitis. After the surgery her voice sounds a lot healthier and she hits c#5s with ease once more.
