- My thoughts on owning a 2015 F150 after 190,000 miles and after owning F150s - Ive had a 1979 1986 1994 1998 2007 2013 and now 2015. Im keeping this one forever. No partially built "racetrack rot" finished at the dealer 2022 for me.
Why 2015? Its about the aluminum body sitting on a drivetrain and electronics system proven since 2009.

F150 things to keep in mind when buying best truck you can
- 2015 and newer have the aluminum body that won't rust. don't go older.
- 2016 and newer have Apple carplay. not sure why your 2015 has it. Great feature
- 2018 and newer have 10 speed transmission - which is a maintenance nightmare. Stay older with 6 speed
- some like the 3.5. others the 5.0. no one likes the 2.7
- everyone loves remote start
- 2020 and newer was likely partially built, then stored at factory, then finished when parts arrived - alot of problems
- 52 didn't like the tailgate step or retractable running boards. Every one of his viewers does.
- snowtire comment is absolutely true if snow area, but no one commented on it.
Buy a 2015-2017 with s speed transmission, remote start and apple carplay.

Living with a bit of Rust on an 11 Loaded Platinum, it has a 6.2L. Now it has a gallon of Fluid Film on it. Everything in life is a tradeoff.
you miss the best tear 2017 3.5 eco (10 speed)2 reason 1 has the 2nd gen engine with port and direct injection and you can change the color of the interior lights
I like my 2.7 and 21.3 lifetime mpg including towing around my track toy.
If you are buying a used truck with high miles, its important to have a history. There are plenty of stories of 5.0 and 3.5 6 speeds with over 300,000 miles on them. 2.7 may be same, but not enough history yet to tell. As for 10 speed, ford technicians and ford's own service bulletins suggest 6 speed is less trouble. 10 speed might be great and better than other brands, but 6 speed is more trouble free than the 10 speed. So if someone is buying a used f150 with over 150,000 miles it probably makes sense to watch for the 6 speed. I definitely agree about listening to relatives or guy at the bar. Everyone is out to prove theirs is best. Not to find out what is best. Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear your 2.7x10speed is working great. We can all have our own opinions. I would disagree about getting the EcoBoost either the 2.7 or 3.5. They all have timing issues and not so reliable when compared to the 5.0L V8 longevity and reliability wise, go with the V8. The difference between spending a little more on gas versus spending money on engine repairs is worth it. Forgot to mention all the oil leaks to the turbo and cooling lines. A lot more intricate design too. Keep it simple get the V8
I have not experienced any of these problems, not with the 2011 ecoboost 3.5 or the 2016 3.5. One thing I have learned is that clean, fresh fluids are critical to long trouble free component life. This includes brake fluid, coolant trans fluid, powersteering, differentials and transfer cases. Costly maintenance but forget factory service guidelines if you intend to keep the vehicle. You will be out of warranty when parts fail. Motor car companies tout lifetime service intervals to sell cars and then are able to sell service parts (or a replacement car) when their product konks out.
The reason people get the 3.5L is because you can tow easier @ lower RPM's....the 5.0L has limitations.
Im old enough to remember my dad thinking radial tires are dangerous. Or that fuel injection cant be worked on like a carburetor. And yesterday, I told my daughter EVs arent ready (telsa Y is best selling car in California and in Germany). It pays to wait for things to be perfected. Im betting the 3.5ecoboost is perfected. But i get keeping it safe. Everybody gets to decide for themselves in america. Thank a VET you know for that.
I also have a 15' with the 2.7. I don't tow but get 22>23 on the hyway. Got it used with 22k on it and it now has about 105k. Absolutely 0 problems. I do love the tailgate step. 74 years old with bad knees and it's a lifesaver.
If a 74 yr old loves the step, then it must just be me who stubbornly likes my stepstool. Must be a problem between my ears instead of with the step. thanks!

All the viewers agree on the step. Maybe since I use the truck in winter snow and load alot of heavy tools and things like gas cans and shingles, I just don't feel confident stepping up into the truck on it. But thats me. Glad it works for everyone else. So Bruce, for other readers considering the purchase of a used F150, which do you have 3.5eco or 5.0? I recently bought a 2017 2.7 liter ecoboost. I thought it might be underpowered, but it does great. I don't have a massive trailer so I can't speak to that. I can say that it gets 23 mpg mixed and 24-25 highway. I was shocked that 325 hp could produce those results. It gets better than my 2021 power boost, which admittedly had a 3.5 with hybrid assist and 430 hp. It has a 6 speed still.
Better fuel eco than the Powerboost? That surprises me. I will have to compare my 2.7 with my friend's Powerboost.

Under powered LOL. The 2.7 might have less power than the 3.5 and 5.0, but it's the fastest of the 5 F150's I've owned. The fuel mileage is outstanding for being a 4800 lb truck.
I always caution comparing fuel economy to other drivers. I always compare to myself from vehicle to vehicle. I have a sibling who is scary to ride with. He thinks the gas pedal is an on off switch. Full down on gas, or full down on brake. His mileage is miserable no matter what he drives. I have an inlaw who is even worse to ride with. Coasts up to every stop sign. Takes off like there is a wedding cake on the roof that they don't want to tip over. They get great mileage, but life is too short for driving like that.
I've had a 2017 with a 5.0 for the past year. I bought it with 100,000 km and I now have 130,000. It's been fantastic. And it has a Ford extended warranty to 200,000 km. I'm very happy with it. It's expensive to fill up but that's what you're getting into with a truck.
Mine is the 5.0 and I get to put in e85. A full tank cost me 75$ and I still get 380 miles with a full tank
do you know what your mileage difference is between e85 and regular? I hear conflicting from "no change" to "cuts in half"?
Service managers at local dealer don't recommend the E85
Just say “no” to turbo. Naturally aspirated is the way to go for longevity. 6.5’ box with longer wheelbase provides a better ride than the 5.5’ box. Built-in tailgate step is awesome to have when you need it. I use my fixed in place chrome running boards to climb in and out of my truck - perfect. 6R80 transmission is by far a better transmission than the newer 10 speed. A manual transmission would have been a nice option. Towing mirrors are nice to have if you haul a trailer regularly. A well optioned XLT is the best bang for your buck. Too many gimmicks (to break) on the higher optioned models.

Pete, I can tell you are old school by the manual trans comment. We all have to make our own choices. Even over the road semi trucks have started switching to automatics. Several trucking companies have found better fuel economy with automatics and lock up converters than with manuals. Its hard to outthink a computer. I still love driving a manual thou. 6.5 box gives nicer ride on highway, but that extra foot really creates issues if turning around, parking or just navigating in urban traffic. It all depends where you are driving.
Agree completely. Have a 2014 XLT 5.0 super cab with 6'6" bed.

Me either, except I live in Colorado so if I get mud or snow caked on the hinges they may slow and I have to re spray them with wd40
I almost never use the step. Granted, I've only had this truck a month and I'm used to not having it in my prev truck. The power running board I must admit is slick but I definitely wasn't shopping for it. Just another thing that will break or jam up in winter.

mileage will vary based on who is driving and how they are driving. Driving for fuel economy versus driving like you stole it to beat your buddy to the boat landing

It's honestly the best vehicle I've owned in my 61 years.
I traded my 2014 Cadillac CTS4 for it. (And about $30k)
2016 is the last year of the bullet proof 6R80 six speed transmission, and doesn't have that super annoying stop/start crap, or even dumber... the cylinder deactivation mode.
It's in showroom condition. Bought from original owner with 61k miles on it. She's only got 67k on her now.
Oh, and I love the built in step and grab handle, and the retractable running boards!
everyone I know who has the cylinder dectivate on a gm or start stop hates it and has problems. I hate to help the Saudis, but Id rather burn a little more of their oil than to destry the reliability of my truck.
I Love my 1 owner 2016 , V8, XLT, FX4, Crew cab. Mostly I love the remote start and keypad entry. I also get 19 mpg effortlessly.
I have a 2016 King Ranch 3.5 ecoboost and it is the best vehicle I have ever had. Bought it new. 71k miles currently.
I got a 2017 F150 Lariat and I love it it's a sport also and I plan on having this baby for a long long time. I only have 69000 miles. Great video.

November 2021 I bought a USED 2015 F150 XLT FX4 4wd with 105000 miles on it. Has the package with the Lariat-like center console 6 speed automatic shifter and that awesome 5.0 Coyote V8. I LOVE THIS TRUCK! Haven't had any issues and am at 119000 miles driving long road trips. It drives wonderfully on and off the road bone stock. 6 speed transmission is great in the mountains. IMO better than the newer 10 spd tranny I had in a rental truck. Can do serious off roading just fine with stock FX4 package. Great 4wd system with very useful rear diff locker. Taking good care of it with regular maintenance. Hope it will last me many years.
2015 fx4 with 5.0 is the target find - if you can find one.
I always buy new. The problem with used is sometime you inherit issues from the previous owners and some used cars are very problematic
agreed on issues from older. Trouble now is that new vehicles have all the "race track rot" from being built and sitting for months waiting for parts due to covid supply chain and trade war with hina. IVe heard so many stories of rusted brake rotors and transmission issues - regardless of brands. No good answer right now.
I don't agree about the step feature on the tailgate at all. My 2010 has it and I love it. Especially if you're getting in and out loading or unloading, it's very handy and very sturdy. Mine also has a handle that pops up. Very useful and you dont have to always have a step stool with you.
Im the only one who doesn't like the step. I am always too much of a hurry and did slip the only time I used it in winter wearing snowboots and unloading tools. Based on all the feedback, I need to give it another shot.

Agree 100%. I also use the ramp (step) for leverage to load, unload heavy stuff (tillers, snowblowers, washer, dryers,etc).
I have a 2017 2.7L xlt sports edition with 51,000 miles and runs great!
its not even broke in yet. Keep changing oil regularly because the turbo breaks down the viscosity faster than those without turbos.
For a guy that doesn’t like/appreciate the amenities it is odd that you would be attracted to a Platinum. Why not just get an XL or an XLT… and I have a Lariat with a 5.0 Coyote and I love pretty much everything about that truck. It’s the nicest F150 I ever had. And all of my Fords - about 12 of them - even the worst one was better than the GM trucks that have com,e to add grief to me life. This is a beauty truck though and I do appreciate your sharing of thoughts on it.
I like the heated air conditioned seats. And heated steering wheel. And auto dimming headlights. Cheaper to get platinum than to add those to xlt. Great truck overall.
I agree, when looking for my truck I tested tacomas, tundras, chevys, dodge and for the price my ford had the best options and looked the best. She came with mud tires and 20 inch fuel wheels, and ford tonneau cover and all the standard platinum options. It had 85k on it but I didn’t care, I wasn’t gonna pay 70k+.
Instead of a step stool I use a five gallon bucket...
And speaking of gimmicks, my '95 has the power lumbar support. I never use it but it does make a whirring sound when you press the button.

My '96 Bronco had the electric lumbar support. Bought it new, had it for 21 years.
Got the 2016 4x4 with 3.5 EB. Love it, more torque than 5.0 V8 103K problem free miles!

Nice truck. I totally agree. I have a one that’s almost the same; it’s a 2016 black platinum FX4 with 126k, 5.0, and it has a tonneau cover too. Got it for 26k down here in TX. I don’t think that’s too bad for a truck fully optioned with one of the most reliable modern engine and transmission options ford has offered. It does have some minor paint damage on the rear passenger side door. In spite of that, love it. I did however notice my running boards deploy and retract way faster than yours, which is interesting. I definitely think these are the most attractive modern pickups on the market personally. Nice video, great review.
I have a 2015 platinum f150 with 5.0 I just recently hit 98k and bought it with 85k on her. I’ll never get rid of her. I see every other truck on the road and still love mine the best.

@@edforthewin8574 currently at 111k miles, she’s going strong. Major repairs? No, just pm stuff for the mileage. The starter shorted out and had to be replaced, had the differential serviced per the mileage. I change the oil every 3k and recently had the transmission flushed. Did have the battery go out on me and she wouldn’t start. Nothing major thank god.

Many vids on youtube say do not flush a trans with high mileage. Just drop pan, change filter, refill. I even had more than one trans tech tell me the same.

I have a 2017 f150 that I bought new then. It has the 3.5 v6 naturally aspirated. I get about 19 around town and 24 to 30 on the hwy. No problems except just recently had some paint chip off of top of tailgate. I love the 6 speed trans. I plan to keep it for at least 10 more years, only 33,000 original miles.

What a great review. You definitely know your Fords. I have my vehicles treated with Fluid-Film oil spray every year. It helps greatly if you live in the salt belt. I also avoid car washes that spray underneath in the winter. The car washes recycle water, and in the winter - this recycled water is brine (with salt from other vehicles). If you want to clean underneath - use the water hose at home.
I am old school and go to the spray it yourself carwash. You are spot on about the salt brine in underbody wash.
Brine. 50% salt/50% water…Did you take a water sample? Or taste test? Diluted water, likely 99% water.

Only problem is they’re 20k grand more for optioned out trucks than almost all the rest of the trucks. Every f150 i looked at was an ass load more than my ram with well over 70k more miles on it generally. The rust part you got me there tho😂
the last two trucks I had to move up from where running great at very high miles. but the bodies were rusting off. The aluminum body changes that. So anything not aluminum is out for me. Since you went steel body, take great care of it with regular washes, undercoating and watching the body. You can get the bodies to last alot longer than I have, but it takes attention. Love my 2016 SuperCrew with the 3.5 Flexfuel V6 and 6 speed auto trans…. Great on gas, plenty of speed and power 👍🏻Bought new and the only upgrade was I bought some older model 18” alloy rims to upgrade from the 17” stock steel rims.

I have 2012 Eco 3.5 with 115,000 on the Crew Cab. I like the 6.5 box to haul and very seldom have more that 2 people in truck. I’ve taken on long trips and average 18.5 on all driving. I’m on the original brakes and have had no mechanical problems. I change the oil a little early around 4500 miles. Interior is perfect but I have to doctor up the rust in the spring. My next truck would be 5.0 King Ranch. Think the long box and large back seat answers all the requirements. Although no complaints on the 3.5, just would like the sound of the 5.0. Super review. You relate to the normal consumer. Best thing about an F150 is rolling over potholes in the urban jungle.
Id agree on the sound. I know guys who refused new mustangs with turbos over the sound. My 3.5 is great, but it does NOT have that throaty V8 sound.
Love the sound on acceleration of a 5.0, almost as good as sex.
I have a 2016 King Ranch 4x4 FX with 3.7 eco absolutely love it . Over 150 K miles had vacuum pump leak but very reliable it has the towing mirrors.like he said love the mirrors . Don’t do 5.0 it struggles towing near the top weight capacity. 3.7 handles it very well .

I am able to get 19 to 20 mpg on my 5 L V8 in my 2016 F150 King Ranch with a 6 Speed Automatic with a High Way Gear in the rear end.
I think fuel economy is a function of cruising speed on highway and driving behavior. I set cruise at 79 on divided highway and I tend to use the gas pedal as an on/off switch. No doubt, I could do alot better.
I own an 2015 F150 Lariat 3.5 Eco 160k love it. Bought it used with 40k on it. Great truck not perfect but great.

Now 27000 km later I can just say I had zero problems,pure pleasure to drive
Some new one I hear do have problems i don’t know much except that rust on rear diff

urban legend is that all that time sitting created rust issues and problems with brakes and transmissions. If yours was able to build and deliver without sitting for months, hopefully you are safe. glad to hear it. you can check original build date from vin and see when you bought it to know how long it was around before you got it.
Good to know 52. I agree about using your time off enjoying family and nature in general. I have a 2018 XLT with coyote 5.0. I see we get about same on mpg. I have 17 mpg on my daily driving. Good point on the power running board. I have 45000 miles on the truck thus far after two vacations out to western states twice in two years. The sync3 Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay is a good feature on long trips. Nice truck you got there.
in old days, you got a new truck so the old one wouldn't "nickle and dime" you. Now the new ones after sitting at the racetrack for months are more of a maintenance nightmare than the used ones with 100,000 miles. And you save that money to have fun with the fam.
While I didn't have a Platinum I did have a standard F150 aluminum body. If I drove it correctly I could achieve `26mpg. It was a standard V8 piled down with tons of tools. It had a cross box and a RatPack.
mpg is a function of being conservative on gas pedal and limiting top speed. I had an engineer tell me that going from 59 to 79 on cruise will cut your mpg almost a third. hard to compare from driver to driver
Is it bad I drive about 90-95 on interstate? I live in an area with not much traffic (during my commute) and love flooring my truck. 2015 fx4 5.0. Lots of power. Will hurt feelings of Camaro owners and chargers on take off.
Luckily I got my 22 F150 XLT Supercrew 2.7 FX4 the day after Christmas 2021 before they let them sit too much. At least mine didn't sit. I looked at the build date and it was built 2-3 weeks prior to me buying it. The very first 22 that my local dealer got on the lot. Almost a year later and 12k miles with zero issues. I went with the 2.7 because I read about all the timing chain and cam phaser issues with the 3.5. The oil consumption on the 5.0. I also didn't want that cylinder deactivation feature that they started putting on the 5.0 in 2021. The 21 and newer 2.7 is the Gen3 version of the motor which they supposedly fixed all the minor issues from the Gen1 and Gen2 versions. Just buy whichever F150 suits your personal needs the best. By the way, that's a very nice 15 Platinum you got there and doesn't look like 190k miles. Good video.

@@52Weekends52 It says on the sticker that they put in your driver door jam. It doesn’t give the exact day but it gives the month and year. Mine says 12/21 which means that my truck was built a maximum of 3 weeks before I purchased it late December.
HEY!!!!! The tailgate step is not stupid.... its awesome! Saves my knees. Imagine a humanlike walrus trying to get in the back, the step avoids that. The push button gear selector is terrible. The ram i borrowed has the button... I keep mistaking it for a volume knob. ABSOLUTELY HATE IT.
Aldo, you are a better man than I. when, Ive tried to use the step, Ive felt like Im on a fly trapeze at the circus. Especially if I am carrying something to load or unload. I'll stick to the $10 stepstool and the trapeze can stay in the tailgate. Glad to hear it works for you thou.

@@joebump7034 Yeah thats what i thought, if you hate the built in step, but then use a step stool you have to carry around, isnt it basically the same thing? The only real advantage is you arent having to pay whatever it is ford charges for the built in step, but realistically it probably breaks down to 1 or 2 dollars a month on your note, even less buying used.

Great video. I don’t agree with everything, but opinions vary. I have a 2015 XLT 5.0 and a 2018 XLT 3.5 eco boost. The two trucks have all the options of a Lariat without the leather. Just my preference. The 5.0 with 3.73 rear axle and the six speed auto gets better fuel economy and is faster off the line than the 2018 eco boost with the 3.55 rear axle. The 2015 has never seen the shop other than routine maintenance. The 2018 had the VCT issues and spent two weeks in the shop for repairs “luckily” I caught it while still under warranty. The 2018 3.5 eco boost will pull a 12,000 lbs load extremely well. The 2015 5.0 has trouble with a 8,000 lbs load.
Daily driving, I love the 5.0. If I need to haul anything I use the 3.5. I can’t begin to put into words how much better the eco boost pulls a load. Just my opinions. Thanks.
I got 2014 f150 XLT 5.0 with 230,000 so far, love my truck! You can keep Ecoboost! 5.0 best!
agreed that 5.0 is straight forward and more trouble free. The opposing argument would be that if you get 5% better fuel economy with 3.5 over 230,000 miles at $3.50 a gallon, thats about $2500 in gas savings. Will you lose it on repairs? Nice thing about Merica is we can all decide for ourselves and see how it works out.
I have this exact truck, 2015 Platinum. The only thing I hate about it is the electrical system. Too many components share a common ground, so chances are if you have a problem with a single component, other components are gonna freak out as well. I had a problem with one of my blind spot modules and subsequent wiring harness…, when it would short, almost every component in the cab would freak out - the a/c, power windows, running boards, navigation…all of them would cycle off and on. It’s a good truck otherwise, but Ford took shortcuts on the electrical when this 2015 model debuted.
I had electrical issues with my 2008 AND my 2013. In both cases it was actually because of water coming in on the gasket from the upper brake light on back of cab and causing shorts in passenger a piller wiring. If I was having electrical issues, I might take that light off, permatex the gasket and put it back on.
I own a 2018 ecoboost. The 2015 has the first gen ecoboost with all the blow by oiling issues. Carbon build up on the valves and all that. The 2nd gen fixed all the problems with 1 gen had. Other than that I haven't noticed much of a difference between 2015-2019
so when did they change from gen one to gen two? My 2013 mustve been gen one and I had no problems other than rust on body.

I own a 2014 with the 3.5 ecoboost. My worry is rust, but with 110k it runs great. Will be looking to upgrade to the 3.5/10 speed when this one dies!😊
that is what I did. My prior f150 was still super reliable, but the body was falling apart. when you make the move, you will feel comfortable. Pretty much the same truck in most ways.
I like the heated steering wheel with the below freezing weather we have right now. And I have found my tailgate step to be very handy and improved my safety. The yellow knob in your tailgate can be pulled out, extended out, and put up 90 degrees for a very sturdy pole to grip onto when stepping into the truck bed. My 2016 King Ranch will also auto parallel park itself on the right or left side of the street. The problems I have encountered are frozen door latches that prevent the doors from latching closed and the brake cylinder booster. Both were recall items fixed. I am also having issues with the retractable running boards. It started in winter and would work with a good stiff bristled brushing and lithium grease lube. Now they are just inconsistent on the driver side. My wife is short with short legs and she likes that they drop lower than the fixed running boards on the 2011 Lariat we had. But when they do not extend I have to close and then open the door and place my foot on them for a little manual assist. I will have to get it in for repair under my extended warranty. Overall a very comfortable truck with good leg and headroom. Much better than the 2018 Edge. I like Ford; increasingly over GM and miles ahead of Chrysler in quality. I think they all have left quality concerns behind, including Ford.
you and I have same experiences on the steps. My partner is 5'0". She loves them. The colder it gets, the more often I have to "help them" close on driver side. After their government bailouts, GM and RAM just never got it back together. Fords aluminum body is the reason I stayed with Ford, and glad I did based on all the troubles my neighbor is having with his new gm.

I have the 3.5 Eco Boost. It's great on gas and has tons of torque and performance. I bought my 2016 used . It already had 50k miles. I've put 15k on it. It looks great and drives like new. I highly recommend this generation F150.

I have the 5.0 Coyote in my 2016 King Ranch, and love that V-8 growl.
If I'd get a turbo, it'd be the 2.7, excellent power & the best gas engined fuel economy & cheaper than a 5.0. V-8's still have the best sound!
I cant argue with the naturally aspirated race car sound of the 5.o. The only disappointment of the ecoboost turbo sound so far is lack of that racecar sound at idle.
My coyote holds its own at 21mpg. '16, 6 speed. It has been up to 24.5 on a certain daily commute on a job 3 yrs ago. Subscribed.
thanks for subscription! Every time I try to get great mileage on a trip, I end up clicking the cruise up faster and faster and passing cars till the mileage drops back down to around 17. ITs my bad, not ford. That and the LT mud lug tires hold mine down. To hit 24.5, im betting the wind at your back and the cruise set at 56? congrates. Highest mpg number IVe seen here in the comments.
I bought my 2021 used because I wanted to be sure it didn’t have any issues. Buy new u could get a lemon. But buy one with mileage and good vehicle history and u know ur good to go

I bought a new 2016 F165. I call it F165 because is has a 2.7 liter 165 cuin v6. I have one more payment left and the truck has 87k miles. My front rotors warped @ 2,000 miles because the pads were bad. The only other problem I had was @ 69k miles when a $20 cylinder head temp sensor (po1299) went bad. This was my first new car or truck and I love it. The only thing I hate is the stiff ride. It will get 19 mpg in the city but you have to take off soft like you are taking your 100 yod granny to the doctor. It will get 26 mpg on the hwy but you have to drive 68 mph.
Interesting to hear that someone had brake pad issues pre covid. Ive heard alot of horror stories about the brakes on 2021 and 2022 f series that sat on the race track for months waiting for parts. Maybe there is more to it. Tires sure do matter on ride quality. Ive got LT since I pull a trailer once in a while. Makes it into a rock hard ride. Really good P series tires can improve the ride alot. You are spot on with mileage. Its all about the driver. Since I am impatient in traffic and set cruise at 79, I get garbage mileage. Id say your truck is only going to go another 200,000 miles or so. LOL. I hopeyou spend that newfound truck payment money getting out and seeing our great country.

Back in the 1970"s my dad bought a 1970 ford truck and it was a very nice truck when ford built them,then we also had a 76 ford f250 longbed,where you can sit inside the engine bay with a big 390 ci, now today they are junk,can"t work on them or they fall apart,and they cost to much,I still go old school AMERICAN VEHICLES,and i own a 1966 chevy c10 truck.thank you

I felt same about my 13 as you feel about your 2011 till the doors started rusting off. Do you live in area of country with no rust issues, or are you doing something to mitigate the rust? if so, what?

I had one of those plastic steps for my travel trailer and it collapsed when I was getting out of the trailer. I weigh 225lbs and switched to a portable aluminum platform.
I have the 3.5 Ecoboost in my 2015 Expedition and it had the problem with phaser rattle. I bought it used with 157k on it and think the problem was caused by infrequent oil changes. Three oil changes at 5k intervals and the problem is gone.
Are you using Havoline oil? My mechanic recommends it.
ford recommends their own semi synthetic instead of full synthetic. Anyone know why Ford doesnt recommend full synthetic?
@@chetmyers7041 No. I use Mobil One Full Synthetic High Mileage with a Motocraft filter. My neigbor works for a company that supplies the additives for motor oil and said that Mobil One is one of the few companies that does not substitute ingredients and sticks to their formula even when supply chain issues are present.
I use the OEM Motocraft filter because, according to the Project Farm test, it is not as dense as some of the more expensive brands but, when clean, it may allow for more oil to flow to the phasers. The Motocraft filter probably doesn't last as long, but I never go more than 5k between changes even with full synthetic.
My vehicle came with an aftermarket catch can that was full when I bought it and a lot of milky sludge was at the top defeating the purpose. I make sure to empty this about every 2.5k miles but don't know if it has anything to do with the phaser problem.
My opinion is this: 2015-2017 F150 with the 5.0. I have a 2015 with the 5.0 that has 112,000 miles on it now. I average 18 mpg (hand calc) with 80% highway 20% city driving. The 5.0 also has plenty of power and is less complex than EcoBoosts. My dad has a 2016 2.7 and is having waste gate issues while I have nothing wrong. I say 2015-2017 because the gen 2 coyote is the most reliable engine without oil consumption. The 6R80 is also a solid transmission, and the body being aluminum means my truck is spotless even though it’s a 9 year old rust belt truck. Last thing is I would keep up on all fluid changes and undercoat the truck. Doing all of that, the truck will last a very long time.
Agreed. The 15-17 avoid the 10speed transmission AND avoid the start stop nonsense of later models. If Im picking something to put in the dream museum with the '70 hemi cuda, '77 pontiac 455 trans-am, etc; I'd pick yours.

no issues with cam phasers or the spark plug disaster on the 5.4? How long have you owned it? Did someone else do the plugs? Make sure you don't have water leak on the upper brakelight above rear window. That weathersripping gets dried out and fails. when driving in rain, water gets inside electrical when it runs down passenger a pillar. Love my 2015 XLT 4X4 5.0 Supercab with 7 foot bed. Best investment I ever made. Swapped out the suspension to aftermarket parts a with upgraded sway bars, upper control arms, new rims and tires. Rides like a dream and can handle any terrain.
To all 5.0 owners though, CHANGE YOUR SPARK PLUGS! I was keeping up on oil changes and my mileage started to drop quickly after 50K miles. Changed out the spark plugs to a quality brand and have had no issues since. the stock Ford battery is also trash, had to replace that with something decent in the third year of ownership.
Also 4X4 owners, replace your hub vacuum solenoid every 2 years. They fail often and are a 50 dollar part at maximum. 50 dollars every 2 years will save you serveral hundred on IWE HUB replacement.

@@52Weekends52 Moisture gets inside the coil and corrodes it. Once this happens the vacuum is restricted leading to partial engagement of the wheel hubs. This destroys the wheel hubs over time. It can be a silent killer as well, as I had no noises in my front end until the IWE hubs were worn out. When the IWE goes it sounds like worn out brakes, just screeching metal on metal. Like I said $50 and it is a toolless install. Just pop the hood, detach vacuum hoses, unclip then throw in the new solenoid.

@@gurkanwarpalsingh2092 Inspect the 4x4 vacuum hub system immediately. most run those systems until the IWE's become a split gear in the hub assembly.
Plugs filters and transmission fluid change would also not be a bad idea and really pay attention to the transmission cooler lines, especially where the bracket is attached to the engine block. They like to rot out there quick.
I too own a 2015 Platinum SuperCrew. Some items to note that should be clarified :
- SuperCrew is available with the larger 6.5’ box
- Larger dual mirrors are available as an option. They are the power towing mirrors.
- Rear seat area only has a/c vents. There are no controls for the HVAC in the rear.
- Forscan software was most likely used to modify the key fob settings to open and close the windows with the fob. This does not come from the factory this way. Also the sync software was updated (probably with Forscan) as the 2015 did not have the version shown with Apple CarPlay.
- I get the same mileage as you with my 5.0
-Column mounted shifter with bench seat is available on lower end trims.

Mileage is a function of driver. If I set cruise at 69 instead of 79 and was more patient with gas pedal, my mileage would improve.
I'd only buy the 5.0 with the 6 speed automatic transmission. I change the oil in my 2012 Expedition with the 5.4 every 3k miles and I never have engine problems.

Actually, its almost all at highway speeds. But my highway speeds are 75-85. If your highway speeds are 65-75 or even 55-65; you will do better. Its all about parabolic wind-shear increasing exponentially at speeds above ~ 35mph
Im curious what the cruise was set at to get 25mpg with the 5.0 - or any full size pickup truck. Im not disputing it, but I have just NEVER heard of anyone without a diesel getting over 20mpg in a heavy truck doing more than 60 mph

Get the Coyote, if you pull or step on it hard, the turbo gives you no advantage on mileage. I have a four wheel drive extra cab with the Coyote, mine is a 2014, with a heavy Leer topper, I get between 19 to 22 on the highway. No Turbos for me. I have no rust on my 2014, and, I live in northern Minnesota where we use a lot of salt. Just have to keep theim clean. The 2014, was the last in the 12th generation, and, the best. I woulld never buy the first model year of a new design. The steel body if cared for will last, and, it is stronger, and, cheaper to repair if needed. Like a great architect once said, "less is more", I like a simpler approach to things, less to go wrong. If you ask a Ford mechanic which one they would pick most say the Coyote as well.
the v8 tends to be answers in areas that are low altitude or flat highways. Ive noticed the colorado / Montana responders have said that in high altitudes, the turbo blows the v8 away for towing capacity. glad your 14 isnt' rusting. The f150s came standard with the 6r80 transmission until the 2017 model year. However in 2017, the 10r80 was paired with the 2.7 ecoboost. It wasn’t until 2018 that the 10r80 became the transmission mated to all but the base engine.
so you can buy a 2017 as long as not the 2.7 and still get the 6speed. Good to know.

In the past 15 years this is what I'd recommend and I have owned them all and done extensive research. I cannot comment on 2.7 though as I haven't owned it.
Prior to 2011, don't bother.
2021-Present, don't bother.
2011-2014 5.0 V8 (probably last dependable long lasting truck. A metal truck with a simple V8 and 6 speed)
2015-2017 5.0 V8 (Aluminum started but EcoBoost still had GEN 1 issues. Truck was more of an SUV and targeted families)
2018-2020 3.5 GEN 2 EB (5.0 had issues these years but the EB has the GEN 2 now. 10 speed is hit or miss)
I currently have a 2020 3.5 built prior to lockdowns. It has been a great vehicle but I do find myself missing my 2013 Platinum often. I had a 2022 Tremor I hated and it had all kinds of issues. After 2021 I will buy a RAM or Toyota.

truck shortages have created alot of lumpyness in truck pricing - like everything else. Glad you came out on the winning side on your truck.
The starter batteries are gonna be a year older than normal on those trucks sitting on the track.
Everyone I know who bought a 2020 or newer anything has issues of all sorts - rotted brakes, interior panels coming apart where dealer finished assembly, paint scratches where workers put parts in after assembly and scratched paint. Just stay away from new until supply chain sorts out.

Bro u can get a 6.5 ft bed on the crewcab. It's considered a long bed option on the CrewCab. I had one and with tailgate down no problem with a dirtbike in the back. The floor console is 100% nicer if u like bucket seats in the front instead of the 60/40 split bench. I personally don't like the column shifter, I actually love buckets. I guess it's what u prefer.
what they offered is differeent than what is available on used market. Id love a 6.5 on the four door, but I just don't ever see used ones for sale. id bet that over 90% of f150 made since around 2013 were 4 door 5.5foot bed
I like the grille on yours. Looks nice. I have a 2018 xlt and its got that grille that almost looks like a 250 grille, very nice. Yours is nice and tight though, very clean looking.

The rotten rockers on the 13 aren't a paint issue. 3rd brake lights leaked, water pooled on the inside. That rot is from INSIDE the cab.....
really sad to hear about the water issue. I had a 2007 that had electrical problems, but only AFTER it rained. The water was coming in the same spot, but since it was parked downhill, it ran along the roof and down the passenger a piller and shorted out the wiring harness. I cant believe they hadnt sorted out the weatherstripping by 2013, sad to hear. PS, my 13 was really bad on rockers, but doors and box were rusting too. Every steel F150 more than 10 years old seems to have rust around the gas filler and the tailgate pivots.

I do agree with buying the older truck up to and including the 15 or 16 model year, but I would get the Lariat with the V8

The fast lane truck proved a 2016 F150 5.0 pulled 9000lbs up a 11% upgrade and had better fuel economy than the 3.5 ecoboost

my sunroof rattles at times too. Someone else posted that the plastic tabs to fix it are cheap, but labor expensive. I might go after doing that myself and doing a video on it. I used to drive Toyotas for company cars on a job for years. Loved driving the tundras and they were trouble free - except for the frame rust out recalls, but that was two decades ago.

Buy used an you inherit someone else’s problem. I long left Ford due to quality issues and went to the Dark Side. My Toyota Tundra has been bulletproof. I am dealing on a 23 TRD Off-road currently.
the depreciation on first year of of ownership on the 23 vs buying a 2020 could easily pay for a family trip to Hawaii or buy an Alaskan cruise. Unless you have unlimited wealth, its all a trade off. Id rather have the family experiences than pay a dealer for new, but we all get to make our own choices and Im glad of that. Enjoy the new truck. I might offer to buy it from you in about 6-7 years.

1. Cabin is small. Easy heat up and cool down.
2.Easy park even parelel park.
3.Better turning ratios you don't have to back up
4.Mountain, forest road better turning tight space. If you going off road lot more better angle crew cab.
5.lightweight better acceleration and stopping + fuel economy
5. ı don't use at all put in tool in back mostly i put it bed.
6. Used price 6.5 ft bed expensive than 8ft bed.
7. Buy new much more cheaper supercab and crew cab.

2015 f150 3.5 Ecoboost has the chain driven water pump. That is hidden inside the timing chain cover. I prefer the simple version. Water pump outside of the motor. On the front. Newer 3.5 Ecoboost has it. Or the 5L coyote.
when did they change that on F150? 2016? Later? I plan to make a pinned comment on best possible F150 to buy. Several have pointed out 2017 went to 10 speed transmission which has had issues. Is it seems 2015 or 2016. Thoughts?
@@52Weekends52 It seems that it has gone as far as 2020's models. Based on Ford is website for parts. It shows 2 versions of water pumps. Yet on Rock Auto parts it shows that 2019 is belt driven. Best thing to do is look at the vehicle in person and see if it has water pump outside of the engine block. If it doesn't. Then don't get it. Because if is chain driven. When the pump goes out, it will start leaking coolant into the engine oil pan. If the pump is cought on time. You save your engine. If not, then is possible you might need a new engine. Even me I would rather look at the engine in person and look for the water pump. There is a video on TH-cam of a mechanic that dismantles all kinds of engines. And he took apart one 3.5 Ecoboost. To see what parts fail. Just for the chain driven pump is the whole timing chain cover. If you take your truck to a mechanic shop. That will be more labor cost. Yet if you do your own repairs. Then belt driven pump would be more piece of mind. It will take less time to change. And you would enjoy your truck longer.

GM & Ford collaborated on the making of the 10-speed automatic.
Early units had some programming problems that has been resolved.
Great review and information ! I own and drive a 2016 F150 with the 5.0 V8 and I have no major problems but need something a bit smaller I certainly don't want the turbocharged engines which the Rangers have so I wouldn't consider a mid-sized Ranger. 😊
going smaller doesn't seem much cheaper or save much on fuel economy to justify the lost space or cargo capacity. Toyota Tacoma holds its resale so well that you can never save enough gas to justify any fuel savings.

I did another video saying Im an idoit for not using the handle. I still prefer the step stool, expecially when hauling heavy tools in and out, but the step is there if you want it.

The other big issue is tire pressure and tire construction. I have LT tires to pull a load, and that hurts mileage. Take great care of that 2011 so it doesn't rust - bottomes of doors, gas filler hatch and rocker panels. If the body stays together, it might last forever. thanks!
Another pro g.m guy I've never seen a frame rust in half or bumpers completely rust apart or tailgates and the g m. multiplex tailgate malfunction from ice and snow and g.m has never had good paint! for years they used lacuer paint now they use acrylic enamel now if they could figure out how to get rid of the orange peel
they make them better against rust every year, but the trucks last longer and longer too. When I was a kid in 70's, a 10 year old pickup on the road was a unicorn - and it was all rusted out. Now, 20 year old trucks aren't that uncommon. They need to have them rustproofed for 20 years instead of 5. Tough problem to solv.e

there is yet another "service bulletin" out for the 10 speed. Complexity for complexities sake. Only the parts suppliers and the servicing dealers benefit.

The 3 valve 5.4 Triton came out in 2004, not 2009.
And the 5.0 Coyote engine is proven since 2011 to be a solid, dependable, bullet proof engine.
If you're trying to "save money", then why on earth would you get a truck? The 3.5 Ecoboost gets a claimed 18 mpg city, 24 mpg hwy.
The 5.0 gets a claimed 15-17 mpg city and 19-22 mpg hwy... not much of a difference.

Kelly, I'll answer your question "why get a truck?" With another question. "If you are getting a truck, why not get a superduty? or an F450?" Mileage will be bad, but it will be super durable. Plenty of drivers spend 90% of the miles with just the driver, but need the truck for that other 10%, so a truck with best fuel economy they can get. Make sense?
Nice overview. It seems like you could've just paid less for a Lariat without power running boards, massage seats and tailgate step.
I've had the 3.5 and now have the 2.7. Both are great engines. 3.5 more power for towing and 2.7 better for fuel economy and apparently reliability (fingers crossed). So far I'm glad I went with the 2.7 for my usage.
Not sure if you could get it pre-2018 but the Ford Connect system is great. Being able to check on your truck and remote start/lock via your phone is sweet and free.
I would personally go with a 2018-2020 if you're looking at 13th gens as these are the "refresh" models and they were able to work out some kinks.
I think since covid, buyers have to take whatever they can find. There are alot of comments against the 10 speed. Not sure if that is valid after 2018. I love applecarplay and would like ford connect. If I was buying today, Id consider the 2.7

U didn't mention the thing for the gas tank,if you run out of gas and need to put gas with a container you need the special neck thing that comes with the truck.,I have to learned the hard way.
JC, when I was young, you just had a gauge and they were horribly inaccurate. Now you have a super accurate gauge, a computer telling you how many miles left, a map where you can show gas stations and a dash warning beeping on screen that you are down to 50miles. You have to tell us how you ran out of gas. I assume there is a brush country story there.

LOLOLOLOLOLO ... also it should have a stripper pole so you have something to grab, it all works if you use it right, and you have to remember these rigs are geared towards older retired folks and they have time to wait for steps and so forth.. also you break an ankle suddenly all those steps features seem genius, AGAIn when you learn how they work... too funny dood

I bought a 2020 F150 XL 3.3 and put my own upgrades on it had 6969 on it when I got it in 2021
you are first one to comment on the 3.3! lower power wtihout the turbo, but expected to be super reliable. How is it on hills, passing or pulling? Since 95% of all engine time is at idle or with just one passenger, we should all consider the 3.3. Thanks! Subscribe.
