      Yes! I will never forgive them for having Hermione say, "If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too!" Ron said that, while struggling to stand on a BROKEN LEG, to the person who had just done the breaking of said leg. You know, the person they all thought was a mass murderer? That takes guts. Why they thought giving that line to Hermione would somehow be better, I'll never know

    Harry's parents being so old in all the scenes where they are grownups really bothered me, I mean they were 21 when they were killed. Also Harry's dad looking nothing like him except for the glasses. I mean Harry was supposed to be his spitting image. Come on.

      Agree 100%. I wonder why they made everyone so much older. Sirius, Lupin, Pettigrew, and Snape would have been about 31-32 at the start, if it's 11 years after Harry was born. Shouldn't James and Lilly have looked 21? I can't imagine Snape without Alan Rickman, but he was in his 60's.
      And the eyes thing! There was so much symbolism in the red and the green for one thing. Okay, Daniel couldn't do the contacts; but then at least Lilly should have had blue eyes, or blue contacts.
      They were really so sloppy with so many details (and non-details). I've never before heard of a character just looking completely different, or acting completely differently. I love the movies, but they had to grow on me. They must be super confusing to people who don't know the books.

    The whole issue with Christian Coulson being “too old” to play teenage Tom again isn’t a good enough reason for me. I mean, Shirley Henderson who played Moaning Myrtle was in her mid-thirties at the time of filming
    Plus, with the amount of editing in Slughorn’s memories, they could have EASILY softened any “fine lines” or “wrinkles” Christian would have had at 29
    My theory is that the casting directors didn’t want such an attractive teenage dark lord, cause Christian? 👌🏼💯 (No slight to Frank Dillane, of course) because they wanted people to root for the good guys
    Cause let’s be honest, Christian as teenage Voldy was the superior Voldy. Charming, handsome, and charismatic, as depicted in the books? ✅ ✅ ✅

    • @anne-marie8018
      @anne-marie8018 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Agree. A charismatic Voldemort would have made a better movie. Let people see why he had followers, and that they weren't necessarily blind. You can't see charisma in a book. It was a missed opportunity.

      If they put the hookey the house elf bit where he sees the cup and locket and him visiting Morfin before killing his father in the movie he could have shown up then they still would have said the issues of to why he wasn't shown at 16 would be he aged out of a teenager but I still wouldn't buy that did any one who didn't read the book know he was 16 when he asked Slughorn what Horcruxes were bc i wouldn't have

      Daniel was always older than Harry anyway and they had to age him in the prologue, not to mention anti ageing techniques, both makeup and computer, are at a point where you wouldn't know the difference.
      Also being that we only see James in memory, a mirror and as a semi ghost form, there's enough reasons to make the memories seem "hazey" hiding the age.
      The mirror and when he comes out of the wand and rock, make the character seem ethereal, again hiding that age.
      I'm otherwords, there loads of things they can do to make it work and as James isn't exactly a main or side character, his rare appearances would be cool if played by Daniel.
      But this is one man's veiw and I don't expect everyone to like it

    Possibly controversially I enjoyed Michael Gambon being cast as Dumbledore, while I loved Richard Harris in the first two, Gambon was just more of a grounded version that was needed for the later movies when we learn Dumbledore is more flawed than first appeared and I actually think going from this wise old perfect grandfather to a flawed elder with a poor temper works better than people give credit for

We adore actors who go all-out researching and putting so much effort into showing how devoted they are to a role (turnip earrings!!!) but then... when they unashamedly disregard hundreds of pages of characterization and reasoning and huge cues ("he said calmly", anyone?) it really rubs me the wrong way. But a low-level annoyed, not with any real malice behind it, just a frustration that after NAILING the character they went on the butcher it (hard agree on your method acting comment!). Everyone who's putting time, energy, and effort into a project, while maybe not being passionate about it to the same extent, should be giving their best performance to date - and part of that is putting work into understanding who they're portraying. Actors don't exist in vacuums, so it's true they can't take all the credit/blame for their decisions, but they're the face consumers recognize so you'd think they'd proceed with more consideration rather than less.

      I kind of liked Gambon's Dumbledore eventually, and he was great in PoA, in my opinion. I still think Richard Harris was the best actor they could ever cast for this role, but, sadly, there are things that could not be predicted or prevented. Reaching his level was an impossible task for anyone, and Gambon made it as well as he could and did a decent job. But Dumbledore in GoF was some cosplaying imposter that acted more suspiciously than Moody, and that's saying a lot.

  • @zendoargos4988

    The hard thing with casting children in a series is that you never know what the child actor will grow into so even if they fit the character description early on they might look completely different from the character later on.
    While I love the casting choices that were made for the major characters most of them were poor fits for their characters from the book by the end of the story.
    Emma Watson, who will forever be Hermione, never fit the book description of Hermione. Rupert Grint was just a normal guy instead of the tall gangly Ron from the books. Harry Potter himself was about a foot too short to match his book counterpart. None of that is their fault. That's just what happens when you adapt written material to the screen and do so across a large timespan.
    It's much more odd what they did with Professor Flitwick and Lavendar Brown. To completely redesign the character of Flitwick the way they did was just silly. I have no problem with them using several different actresses to play Lavendar Brown in the early films when she was a non-speaking background character, but when they got to the film where she took on a role they should have cast a black actress to at least maintain continuity of who they'd had as the background character in the previous films.
    There are some recastings that you can't do anything about. The role of Dumbledore had to be recast because Richard Harris died. Michael Gambon's interpretation of Dumbledore was very different than Harris' and much less like the book version of Dumbldore, but the role was too crucial to the story to remove so it had to be recast.
    Creating characters that didn't exist previously like Nigel is mind boggling. There are so many characters in the 7 novels that the need for the filmmakers to insert new characters is nonexistent.

    • @Ranger1812
      @Ranger1812 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harry in the books is not 6'5"...
      Flitwick's was a major improvement, and Lavender was a character in name alone earlier on. When it came time to casting her in a major role, they should have got the best person for the part, which they did.
      Gambon's Dumbledore is much more like the books' Dumbledore if you look past the worse performances, in particular to Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows.
      Nigel is a great bloke. The reason for his being is clear.

      @@beccag2758 They did, actually. When Harry first transforms into Goyle, I believe there's a moment where Harry's like "Ron?" and Ron does the same, so I don't understand why they felt like it was necessary to change their voices

    It's not a change, but the general issue of so many characters being so much older than their character's age.

      @@PhilBagels I know ,but it's several of the adult characters, too though. For example Snape's actor was in something like his 50s and 60s during the course of the movies when he is supposed to be in his 30s. That's a big difference, and although they weren't as extreme, there were other adult characters whose actors were noticeably older than they were.
